What My Six Year Old Has Learned From CoX
Thanks so much for starting this thread! I love to hear about families in CoX. My husband and I have always believed that the couple that plays together, stays together and playing CoX together has been great way to keep our relationship strong. I know other couples that spend their together time watching TV, but I feel much closer to my husband when we strategize and work towards common goals as a team I mean, were actually interacting with each other, as opposed to simply sitting next to one another.
Now that our daughter is taking an interest in the game, CoX has become a great vehicle for family bonding as well. I read recently that the average American parent spends less than 40 minutes a week actively playing (meaning, participating in any enjoyable shared activity) with his or her children. In our case, gaming as a family has definitely increased the quantity and quality of our fun time together.
My daughter is 10 years old and has been playing CoX off-and-on with us since release. Her early efforts were mostly limited to the costumer creator shed make up one gaudy character after another. Now, however, she gets a lot of pleasure out of so many aspects of the game. She:
<ul type="square">[*]Loves visiting and admiring bases; last weekend she participated in the base builder tour and had a great time.[*]Reached level 28 during double XP weekend.[*]Enjoys the animation of her Fire Sword Circle.[*]Has participated in three task/strike forces.[*]Adores Pocket D (although I have to admit that going dancing in Pocket D sometimes feels a little bit like playing tea party).[*]Is always impressed when coming up against a new enemy group.[*]Introduced me to Bloody Bay Id never spent any time there at all before she convinced me to tag along.[*]Likes reading other players backstories and inspecting their badges. [*]Also, of course, loves writing her own origin stories and going badging.[/list]And her enthusiasm rubs off! Shes so much fun to play with that my husband and I rethought our preference for adult-only SGs. (Were now in one that is geared toward adults and their families.) Like any player, she makes mistakes, but unlike some players, she learns from hers. We usually group together, but she does play independently sometimes (Im always in the room with her just in case anything questionable comes up, but she has a good head on her shoulders).
She is very, very interested in playing with other kids. If any families are playing villainside on Freedom, wed love to meet you!

When my 3 year old granddaughter watches me play she insists that I play RA-RA my werewolf brute and do the roar emotes over and over. His name is Mecha-Wolf but she prefers the name RA-RA.
I even made her a t-shirt with RA-RA on it when she puts it on she will not take it off.
Her mother does not appreciate the line I am a brute I dont get mad I get violent but I love the looks we get when I take her out with me.
As for the 30 minutes in Frost Fire, my SG will spent 30-45 playing on the ice and we are all 25+ we even held a SG event in the mission one time 25 or 30 people playing on the slides FTW
I love this thread as well. I'm a hardcore gamer, so of course, my kids are going to at least see games. Well, when my son was about 10 months old (now 2 years old) I taught him how to jump by letting him play with the keyboard and say "jump" everytime he did (we taught him what "bouncing" meant earlier). So he'd see daddy playing and climb up and start jumping. He also makes gun firing sounds when he sees my henchmen taking out some "bad guys" (my MM's are good guys infiltrating Arachnos).
Now, our 7 month old daughter is really getting interested in things, and she loves our glowie keyboard, so if you ever team with someone, and they all of a sudden start jumping everywhere, you'll know who's helping me out!

One of my sister's friends (while still a teenager) started talking a lot about having a baby, and I mean really seriously about it. My mother talked to my aunt who had a colicky newborn at home and arranged for both girls to spend the night at her place to help take care of the baby. Fixed that in a BIG hurry.
I have to say this thread is the best!
Normally when I think of a child playing, I usually groan and sigh. But after reading this I'm quite impressed and starting to wonder how many possible teams I've been on with children with out even realizing it. Very impressive and nice to hear now that I think about it
Maybe that's why City of Heroes has so many more people then City of Villians... It's where all the kids play! Curse you city of heroes, Curse you! /em curseyou
All joking aside, it's great to hear that CoX can be used to teach children.
So.. how long before the City of Kids comic comes out? ^_^
And on a side note, reading this post as a 29 year old male was even giving me "baby fever" for a minute or two.. wishing I had a young one to teach the game. What's the world coming too? :P

Jeez, LM, now you're making me want to come up with a creative nickname for my little one so she'll fit in with our SG babycrew.

Yeah, we've got a couple of little ones who guest star on our SG from time to time, children of other members, I think they're about 5 and 7 respectively. We have what's called the "Pants rule" in effect when they're on one of our teams or on our vent server.
See some of us have methods of speech that slightly resemble Red Foxx with Tourrets *cough*me*cough*, so whenever they're around, I have to replace several of the words in my sentences with "Pants", leading to rather disturbing Smurf like monolouges.
"That Pantsing Pantser kribbed my Pantsing Pants-loving Kill! Pantsing Pants-monkey!" has been said more than once.
Like I said, Red Foxx with Tourettes.
Most excellent!

Sounds like a smart kid you got there. I've been raising my soon to be 2 year old on CoH. He started as a baby sitting in my lap just watching. Soon he learned that pressing the space bar makes the toon jump. It's funny sitting there watching him press the space bar and making the little man jump. Now he sits and laughs at the characters running around on the screen. Sometimes I let him just mash the keys which usually ends up with me being ran into a mob of purple "somethings" and going to the hospital. Our kids are so much smarter than we are, in a couple of years he'll be better at this game than me. Of course I have to be honest, he sat many nights on the couch with me while I played SOCOM3 and watched me run around shooting everyone in the head so I sorta fueled his addiction in his early months. A few weeks ago I HAD to buy him this little game console he wanted from Game Stop that plays all the old school games. He's gotten really good at playing Pokemon on his older brother's gameboy advance.
The family that plays together stays together.
