Discussion: TRICK OR TREATING
This is my first ever CoX Halloween event; only been around for three months or so. I had a blast doing it! Taking all my alts through and trying to get them the badges and collecting all the loot was a lot of fun.
However, new-car-smell aside, I can understand how some people would get bored with the grind-oriented nature of it. The badges are a good reward for some of us, but I was wondering if perhaps another reward system couldn't be initiated?
Since the event lasts 2 weeks, why not have a Golden Ticket as a reward item? You either earn the Golden Ticket as a random drop item or you get it for achieving a certain number or combination of badges, like an Accolade. The GT is a click item that activates a portal to take you to a Haunted House task force or trial. You are in a completely new part of the game where you sneak around what looks like the set from a classic B-Horror movie. You have to defeat The Monster/Psycho Killer and save as many of the usual B-Movie twits who always seem to go wandering off by themselves in those films.
Since not everyone is a badger I think a choice of rewards for this Haunted House would be a good idea. You get the badge and either a temp power, recipe drop or some other good item. And to make sure this has value; only one romp through the Haunted House per alt and each alt has to earn the golden ticket on their own. No trading/giving GTs and no one but a ticket holder can pass through the portal. Oh, and in order to qualify for the GT, you have to re-earn the badges during this event; no getting in on past laurels.
It just seems to me like that would make all the grinding that much more worth the time.
My mind wanders so often you've probably seen its picture on milk cartons. - Me... the first person version of the third person Steelclaw
Well, as someone who already has all the Kill badges from the 1st year, and about 20 sets of the costume salvage from last year, I found it to be an irritating grindfest. Considering the costumes dont stick around, the only part that interested me this year were the new badges, but in general those took far too long to earn. I spent SIX HOURS on one guy, just to get "Clothes Horse". That's ridiculous. He's lvl 40- I earned 4 boxes from all the Tricks I had to slay...
The whole lack of progress bars for the badges thing is really annoying, can't we get a "seasonal" tab to put them in?
phantom "treats" are as big a letdown now as they were three years ago. Maybe more, what with duplicate costume powers counting toward a badge, but not knowing if it was a dupe costume, an inspiration I didnt have room for, or just a straight-up dud.
Actually, it would have been nice to have the costumes be some sort of drop that we could trade to others- then getting dupes would be a good thing.
Speaking of dupes, several of the choices were a little disappointing- there's the fact that the 2nd least interesting Lost model was used, just slightly better than the bums. Then theres the proliferation of "Cop w/ White shirt", "Cop w/ Blue shirt", "Cop w/ Brownshirt", etc...
You could have at least tossed in "Cop w/ Hawaiian shirt".
And it would be really, really nice to have these on an in-game timer, instead of real time. Something like 6 hours, to let you wear it for a long session. Every time you put things on a "Real Time" timer, you poke an altaholic in the eye...
In the future it would be nice if there was an alternate way to earn any additional event badges that dont require me to stand around and click on a door for hours on end.
Dang, thats a bit of a rant... Despite all that, I still think the whole Trick or Treating thing is great. It's just that as an altoholic badge-collector, the current setup it a bit of a drag.

On a side note, I would like to thank all the developers and gm's for making this a fun Halloween event. It has kept me entertained.

Hear hear! I agree totally.
I had a great time GM's, and most players did too! I especially loved this years costumes.
Next year, give us Vampires, Werewolves and ghosts please? They're much more halloween-esque!
The grind factor is getting rather high. Last year, because of work issues, I only managed to get all the badges on two toons. This year was equally busy, plus I was in the closed beta, so I had just enough time to get the new badges on those two toons, and get one more fully taken care of. It just takes so very long. I don't like knowing that unless I can practically live on the game, I have no chance of getting all the badges for my seven badge hunters.
"Home is where, when you have to go there, they have to let you in."
I ground about 14 characters for Halloween Salvage this year.
Thank the Implementors for the Markets... I kept getting so much duplicate stuff, I was able to sell one salvage item (say... Statesman's Mask) for another (Hami)...
On my next toon, I couldn't get enough (Hami).
Thank goodness for those Markets... I'd have gone insane from sleep deprivation.
My Stories
Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.
Time for a new halloween gimmick. ToTing has lost its cool.
Jack was distinctly missing less appearaces then in previous years.
Lets see something like Babbage or the Khronos titan on the red side once in awhile.
How about some of those DA guys mobbing up and following adamaster kinda like how the guys follow the Ghost around Sharkhead.
Please come up with something new for next year.
Lets have Mummies be among the monsters spawned by ToT and get a badge that says "you have wrapped up the mummies" or some such.
I loved everything about this year's Ween event... only suggestions I would make, in order of importance:
You know how the walking npc's turn and run from baddies? It would be very cool if once in the baddie costume, the npc's ran in the same manner, instead of waving hello.
Since TONS of cool large insps are given as treats, it would be fair to TAKE a random insp with trick (that would even things out, and cause folks to think about what to use/store).
Lastly, salvage drops should be scaled down some.. I think I saw some complaining that costume salvage dropped too seldom, but as I write this, each item is available for only 30K on Pinnacle.
Fix the badge art! Please.
My Lego Models http://www.flickr.com/photos/30369639@N07/ lemur lad: God you can't be that stupid... I'm on at the same time as you for once, and not 20 minutes into it you give me something worth petitioning?
Lady-Dee: Hey my fat keeps me warm in the winter and shady in the summer.
1: Give Vampires and Ghosts and Werewolves their OWN costumes - not cut outs from other villian groups.
2: Useelee GM plz. kthx
3: Give out Halloween costume part recipes as ToT gifts!
4: Moar cowbell.

When I logged in today I found that along with most of my costume temp powers, a Shivan Shard temp power was also missing. I expected the costumes to expire but I think that my Shivan was wiped at the same time.
I did earn it during the Halloween time period, so perhaps it was somehow tagged as something that should be removed with the others. I've petitioned it but not heard back yet.
Has anyone found a similar problem?
