ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations
Be aware that the new 9.12 Catalyst drivers break CoX for some Radeon cards. The release notes say this is a known issue, but does not name which cards are broken.

If you do use them, however, the Catalyst version will not show up as having changed from the previous version in the CCC. This is purely a cosmetic error, as the drivers will have been installed, and the driver version will be properly updated.

Thanks for the hotfix link, Goliath Bird Eater. They're installing now and hopefully will allow me to play ;-)

Anyone have any insight on how much of a difference the CCC makes vs just the drivers by themselves? I was lucky enough to get a HIS 5770 HD and had heard some pretty rough stories both for and against the CCC.
"the reason there are so many sarcastic pvpers is we already had a better version of pvp taken away from us to appease bad players. Back then we chuckled at how bad players came here and whined. If we knew that was the actual voice devs would listen to instead of informed, educated players we probably would have been bigger dicks back then." -ConFlict
I'm considering the purchase of a 5870, and have a pretty good idea what I'm in for (pre-GR), except for this one issue:
KNOWN ISSUES
Task Switching, alt-tabbing, use of windows key while playing It's broken. Use of -renderthread 1 flag to enable multithreading often breaks it. Having the Catalyst Control Center manage FSAA and/or AF may be part of the issue. Running Full Screen may be the problem. You'll have to play around with those three to find out what fixes it for you. |
Also I think the alt-tab issue while in windowed mode could of been caused by my taskbar being set to auto hide. Something with being able to mouse over the taskbar and it popping up over the game screws it up.
|
If someone with a relatively recent ATI card, and running Windows 7, could confirm whether there is still a problem with the use of alt-tab/windows-key while running COH in windowed mode (maximized) and the taskbar on auto-hide, I'd be eternally grateful. I can live without High water effects and bloom, and I actively dislike COH's Depth of Field effects, but I use the windows key to hop out of the game all the time. That'd be a crippling flaw for me, I think.
I have a 4870 with the 9.12 ATI driver and my CoH flashes to an unplayable state... i will try a roll back...
edit: there is a hotfix for 9.12 that solved the problems. Find it at guru3d

That Kortez post is from way back in October 2007, and I've been unable to find any mention of the problem in any thread since then. Edit: just tried removing the renderthread argument and, in addition to seeing no difference in the number of threads CoH was using, I still wasn't able to Alt-Tab. So that's not it. If it's a matter of FSAA and AF being controlled by the GPU, then the problem should be fixed when Going Rogue is released, as ATI cards will be fully supported and all existing issues fixed.

I'm not running in windowed mode - full-screen with the renderthread argument - but this issue is still alive and well for me. Alt+Tab or Windows key do nada.

(I realize changing the config is a hassle, so thank you in advance if you bother to.)
Any chance I could get you to try it in windowed mode (maximized) with the taskbar set to autohide, as well? It makes a difference with certain issues (HeroStats overlays, for instance), and GR is still quite a ways off. Going without alt-tab until then would be pretty painful.

ATI 5850 with Win7 x64
Just got a 5870 to replace my 8800gtx which broke yesterday, and I'm having problems getting AA to turn on. I've tried both in game and out of game and neither seem to actually get AA to turn on. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Just a question for the experts here.
I just put Windows 7 in my old rig. P4 3.4GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon X1650 AGP Video Card.
I was having issues with XP and decided to take the plunge. However, the plunge is not looking so good in-game. I was reading around different forums elsewhere and I am seeing alot of possible solutions, but I wanted to see what you good folks here could advise/recommend.
The one possible solution that I am leaning towards is installing the Catalyst 8.7 drivers. According to some, this will work in Windows 7.
If anyone here can suggest something else that has worked for you, I am all ears (and eyes)
Thanks

Hey everyone, I'm going to be the first to admit I'm not as ech savvy as I'd like to be, but usually I can fanagle what I need to.
Today however, I need a bit of help. I updated my drivers to Catalyst version 09.12 on my RADEON HD 3600 series.
This broke my game. The game is now under what seems to be a massive strobe effect, I've never dealt with anything like this before, I tried to read up on the last few pages of this forum and appearantly 9.12 breaks CoX, is this true? It certainly seems to be.
I'm running Vista 64-bit if that helps.

Download these drivers.
They're the hotfix version of the 9.12 drivers. One of the incorporated fixes handles the "strobing" bug in OpenGL games, CoH included.

You, sir, ma'am, or asexual entity, rock!
I downloaded the new drivers last night, and started the game up to find the strobe effect. I even did a system restore and I couldn't fix the strobing. Thanks for getting my game back in operational order!

Against my better judgment, I came back to ati and got a 5670- a cheap, low power requirement card for my modest gaming needs. For the life of me I can't get AA working in this game, through the game, or the driver. Anyone else have this happen? The 9.12 hotfix I doesn't seem to support 56xx cards. I tried the latest beta CCC, and no joy. My other PC game, Dragon Age, runs just fine.
Yea, that hotpatch fixed the issue for me.
Don't know what happened between patches tho. My old patch when I had XP installed had no problems.

Anyone have anything to report for the 10.1 drivers?
Catalyst 10.1 solved all of my graphics issue. No more artifacting, messed up textures, ghosting of one part of the screen to another., or crashing. YAY!
Although as pointed out in this thread, at least one person has said that Properties are still showing 9.12 after unstalling/Drive Sweeper (in Safe Mode)/ installing new. I am at work so cannot check my machine to see if it is doing the same thing.
10.1 works fine for my 5850 on Win7 64bit. No odd artifacting and screen offsetting when I alt-tab, no strobing effect, etc. However, the other ATI problems remain, such as the inability to use AA and weird water reflections above "low" quality. Can't wait for Ultra Mode. Not just for the shiny graphics, but for the supposed fixes as well.
I should note that I didn't use Driver Cleaner when I uninstalled 9.12. I just uninstalled via the normal add/remove program in Windows control panel, then rebooted, then installed the 10.1 package.
Also: Exactly, my question exactly. Everytime I DL and install these "updated drivers" from ATI's site, the damn drivers detect my card as a frickin VisionTek card. Does the same damn thing if I goto sapphiretech.com and DL their drivers. Every. Single. Time. It MUST be one of two things: A) Faulty Drivers B) Faulty Card. Possible 3rd scenario: C) End-user driver install error. With nVidia drivers, it's quite simple: New card, uninstall old drivers, install new card, install new drivers, update. Why can't it be the same with ATI? It's frustrating.
