Thanks, great post.
Gotta absorb this all in about a year when I have a lvl 50

Thank you, I'm glad you like the post.

You certainly can postpone this stuff until you're 50, but I think it's important to note that you can start working on this project as early as level 4 (for collecting salvage) and level 10 (when recipes start dropping). You can start slotting IOs and collecting set bonuses very early in your career.

The test version of my fire tanker is only level 34, but I've got enough components of the sets that she has a very noticeable +Regen benefit. I use Healing Flames much less on Test than I do on Live, for example.

As a die-hard fan of Fire Tankers, I just have to say Thank you This single thread has really summed up the potential of Issue 9 better than much of my past reading/toying/testing combined.

Sad. Multiple posts in this thread with one user telling someone to do something thats apparently censored to themselves, all reported to the moderator days ago, and nothing done about them.

Scrap, why don't you take this, and turn this whole thread into a understanding IOs, sets and you thread. Then explain the IOs and they way you can manipulate Health and CJ while you are at it.

Use your post, and the fire tanker as an example, but also broaden the scope alittle.

In other words, I took everything from what I learned from this Fire tanker thread, the health thread, and testing, then went after the WS and Pbs, now hitting other toons like the Ice tanker, defenders and Blasters.

I already starting speculation on a elec/elec blaster and regen rates, and set bonuses.

A well thought out generalized, then example driven thread thread would help so many people. From what I have seen, the whole post on HOs, and their limited levels really does apply.

You did a beautiful job here.

You, sir, are an inspiration to us all. Bravo.

In all seriousness though, that was a disgustingly impressive analysis of the potential benefits of stacking IO sets and updating conventional slotting wisdom to embrace the new age of I9, and probably cleared up any potential confusion anyone might have on the subject. While I have never and probably will never build a fire tanker, the same principles apply to any other field.

Rule number six of an empathy defender is NEVER underestimate a blaster's ability to die. I don't care if he has CM, Fort, both RAs, bubbles (both FF and Sonic), and is fighting next to a Storm defender with hurricane on. If there is a way to die in that situation, the blaster will find it.

GREAT build example. I get IOs and sets now and my Fire Tanker will be wonderful once I get the billion or so necessary to outfit her in IOs. ;-/

Three questions: (Either for the great and powerful Scrap or the class at large)
(1) I had Build Up and Fiery Embrace before and didn't seem to get much benefit out of them, even slotted pretty well. I'm considering replacing them with Ariel Superiority and Fly, because fly is so handy in places like the Shard. (Or maybe 2 other support powers, like Recall Friend and Aid Other). How badly will this affect the build?

(2) I like the AOE build, but would miss Fire Sword and Greater Fire Sword. Looking at the numbers, I pulled out Char and Fire Ball and replaced them with FS and GFS. It looks to me like if I take your Single Target Fs and GFS slotting, I lose some Regen but pick up a little Recharge, and Psi Resistance. Am I doing the math right here?

(3) I can't imagine I'll be able to slide into Wentworth's and just buy all those IOs and HOs. So, what should I have on hand before I respec and what needs to be filled in next as I continue the long march to uber?

Thanks.

First of all: Scrapulous - Great Guide!

Now we just need to get it moved or cross-posted to the Player Guides section and maybe the Tanker forum as well. I realize that this guide can (and should be by the reader) be generalized to an over-view of how IO's and sets can help all toons, but this is also an excellent Fire Tanker guide in its own right.

Five stars!

Just one request for this already awesome guide, a build posted using Mid's Hero planner?? Pretty please!!

There are a few things holding this up.

First, I'm writing other guides. This diminishes my playtime considerably, to say nothing of my time to revise existing guides.

Second, a week ago I finished the process of converting my builds from SherkSilver/JoeChott over to SuckerPunch's online planner. Because of that I'm not excited about installing another planner and doing all 74 builds over again. I'm also fond of the online nature of SuckerPunch's instead of having a local app.

Third, every export I've seen from this new planner doesn't include set bonuses. Without that information, I'm not sure what the value of an export feature is over any other planner. Right now it seems like a lot of work for me to install, get the build into the planner, and export it, for not much benefit. As I see it, the benefits are that people could see which set IOs go into which power in the actual build notation, which is certainly a convenience, but that omits the actual information about how the power is enhanced and what set bonuses you get from the slotting, which make up most of my considerations when deciding how to slot a power. So I'm not sure the convenience is worth the effort.

I realize that I'm rushing to judgment here, and checking out this planner is on my todo list. It's just that right now the todo list is large and growing, so snap judgments like this are the order of the day

Excellent Guide!! Thanks for the time put into creating it Scrapulous.

I'm your opposite in that I've always feared online apps as opposed to local. With online build creators like SuckerPunch - they go offline or shutdown the site you lose. Local apps at least you get what you get until you no longer use the app.

It's not so bad, Scrap. Just short text export from Sherk's and then forum import on Mids'.

Yeah, but the export includes a chunk of code that anyone can copy and import into their own instance of Mids' builder, so looking up the actual values isn't an issue at all.

Awesome explanations and thorough reasoning. Thank you very much for all the effort you put in to help me understand how sets work and what to look for. I went with a middle of the road build which is not pure AoE or pure Melee on my Fire / Fire tank. I have Blazing Aura, Burn, Boxing, Fire Sword Circle, Air Superiority, and Greater Fire Sword. My build is as follows:

As a compromise on Health, I have obtained Miracle Heal, Heal/End, Heal/End/Rech, and I am building up Infl against the day that I am able to find some of the items mentioned above for sale. Thanks, take care, and continue the great work of sharing information.

Hey Scrapulous I will help you out on the builds I know a planner that can use IOs. I've even done the PBAoE one for you! This is almost the same build you posted except I changed one thing I added a taunt to blazing aura. BTW the data chunk at the end if you put it in the builder you can see the stats and stuff

I recently came across a fire tank that had Air Superiority and Fly versus Combat Jump and Super Jump. Below is an experimental build that I have not tested, but it allows me to have almost every power that I want and still be (hopefully) a good tank, although the build does not give as great an overall set bonus as the posts above. I have been helping friends with TFs, and would like constructive feedback on when powers and slots were taken for when I am EX at 15, 20, 25, and 34. Thanks.

I have spent all of I9 testing and tuning my variation of this build. I made a few tweaks and have tested it to my liking. I am only missing 20 or so of the actual enhancments, so it's not even at it's full potential yet and I already love it.

I have another discussion of my build in particular going on over here: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showf...c=#Post8468546

BTW, here is my version of the PBAoE +Regen Build:

Great, well thought out guide that I believe will really help people get a breakdown of how to approach IO slotting.

Just some input. One, the boost that's listed as acc for globals is correct. It was originally to hit bonus's however the dev's came to their senses and changed it.

Secondly and this is less relavent to your guide, however the Impervious skin IO that gives the 30% resistance to status effect is about to change to a 7.5% bonus to status effects. This is due to a mistake Castle made. As it is you can slot it multiple times however it only gives it's bonus for the first one. You see it's coded unique in it's effect, but apparently not in it's slotting. Changing it to 7.5% allows you to get the benefit of multiple slotting and gives the potential to get higher then the original cap of 30% by stacking 5 of them.

I met a fire/fire tanker named flamerator (i think) on freedom doing a farm for a lil money. Let me just say we had a fire/kin doing one half of the map anda fire/fire tank doing the other half of the map. the owner of the toon said it cost alot of money, but she has "the most optimum sloting possible for her toon". (this was on the BM map) the troller, named khindra (i think..)(i am bad with names) was witness to this. basicly, seeing this very impressive display of power from my buddy flamerator made me want to roll a fire/fire tank. the owner plays on freedom, so if you see her, ask for the build. i have seen alot of tanks, but not one who could solo a farm map made for 6 people by themselves in good time without a bit of help. i am telling you, i was honestly wow'd.

Well, Scrap - as I promised... here is my FINAL (I hope!) fire/ice tanker. the build is concentrated upon +health and +regen. The attack chain is simple and should be obvious.. FF>IS>Box>FT repeat. This gives a nice sustained damage chain for bosses while keeping ice patch and burn underfoot for minions and lt's. For those of you out there trying to make a decent fire/ice guy work (although slightly beyond the scope of this particular guide) I took huge inspiration from Scrap's work here in this thread. Many thanks to Scrap for giving me a new fervor to play my tanker

Here are the set bonuses:

+3% DamageBuff
+3% Defense
+64% Enhancement(Accuracy)
+41.3% Enhancement(RechargeTime)
+477.9 (25.5%) HitPoints
+Knockback (Mag -12)
+MezResist(Immobilize) (Mag 11%)
+MezResist(Sleep) (Mag 6.6%)
+9% Recovery
+98% Regeneration
+1.58% Resistance(Fire)
+1.58% Resistance(Cold)
+9.38% Resistance(Negative)
+5% RunSpeed
+1.5% Debt Protection

and the build:

I met a fire/fire tanker named flamerator (i think) on freedom

[/ QUOTE ]
I've had the priviledge of teaming, and farming with Flamerator. Her and her partner in crime are amazing to watch in action.

They have several characters each, they know their builds very well, and have the cash to optimize them

I've taken a quick look over these builds and they aren't as expensive as my Ill/rad... looking forward to getting my fire/fire up to 50 to run some comparisons...

[edit - forgot to flag this as a favorite]

Very nicely written guide. I appreciate seeing the reasoning behind making certain choices rather then just being told to do this 'cause I said it is best.'

I did have two questions: Would you consider changing the Positron's Blast in Fireball to Ragnarok for the PBAoE build?

And if so, any other ultra rare sets you would see about replacing for what you have balanced?

You may want to look at Mid's Hero and Villain builder. It handles IO sets and is I13 compliant.

So how well does the build still work? Recently came back to CoH and debating making a fire/fire tanker.
