One thing that seems to get to me, is how often enough. The topic that video games are teaching children how to aim a gun, shoot people, and such. Now, I'm a gamer, proud to be one too. I enjoy all sorts of games.
Now, in the video. They seem to state "We are who we pretend to be." Now, I play games. But on the side, I enjoy archery. Now, if I roll up a Archery/Nrg blaster. Am I gonna go out and find some guy in street clothing and shoot him with my bow? Because... apparently, I am who I'm pretending to be. In this case, a Archery/Nrg blaster.

No, I'm not. Because just like every other straight minded gamer out there, I know where to draw the line between reality and fantasy. I know theres a differance between pressing 1, and drawing my bow and aiming at my target for a clean shot.

I'm not who I'm pretending to be, nor will I ever be a bow n' arrow, pom-pom punching superhero.

The point is, the whole "You are who you pretend to be" statement is bull. I dunno, just needed to vent.

My favorite bit when the politicians call videogames "murder simulators" and "they're teaching out children to use guns" is the fact that they're totally overlooking that clicking a mouse, or moving a analog stick with your thumb and hitting the x button is probably the furthest thing in the world from firing a gun.

Good thing, too.....I certified sniper in America's Army on my first try...they mighta tired recruiting me otherwise.

For an excellent tretise on the positive uses of violence refer to the Novel (Dear god not the movie) Starship Troopers. I hear it's the only work of fiction that is required reading at Officer's School.

Which is precisely why I just posted this video response. It's short and I'm not going to get an Oscar for it, but I thought this was way too much [censored] to let it pass by.

Make sure to watch this response as well. I feel that the argument was summarized very well with this response video.

I have to wonder, is there going to be a counter-documentary like there was with Farenheit/Farenhype 9/11?

I feel for ya man, I wouldn't blame ya if you sued those fools for slander. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised one bit, cause those idiots seem to be so misinformed it isn't even funny.

Just me personally...I don't think even Halo deserves to be in there...

I'll be damned if there's a game that has you going around and beating up pinatas

There's this one game on the Nintendo DS...some surgery game...Trauma Center (very fun but can be difficult). I can't wait for someone to say it teaches malpractice.

Actually, the instruction booklet states several times that the game is NOT a subsitute for medical school, and suggests that people interested in doing operations for a living look into medical school.

I just watched the vid. Dumbest piece of slander I've seen in a while.

I mean, playing an FPS teaches you real life gun proficiency and makes you go out there and shoot cops? For the love of all that is sentient!

The hundreds of comments about the vid contain a few real gems though. I particularly liked these few:

And notice that even if that nonsense were true, wouldn't that DISPROVE their whole thesis, since flight simulators are the ultimate in non-violent gaming? If those terrorists were playing Tekken instead they'd have tried to cartwheel us all to death like Eddy Gordo. - MrGalt

Also the people in the trailer were all anti-gamers. I mean Jack Thompson is like the king of anti-gamers. I think Tetris beat him up as a kid or something. - hobbesie

Wow. No production values can hide the cheese factor on that one. Thumping music with a piano melody and some ill-informed old farts who think a joypad is a type of dildo. - DarthDarthy

Statesman is the iconic representation of a game where people kill other people with huge broadswords and fireballs with attacks named things like 'head splitter' and 'disembowel', so it is kind of a waste of time to play innocent victim. 99% of the content in City of Heroes is violence. It is the only way to solve any mission in any area of the game. To act shocked and dismayed about it is beyond hypocrisy.

ok, i keep hearing the same thing year after year after year. about how video games make violent kids. will i for one am calling everyone who truly care and start telling your reps. in the government to look beyond the games. i saw that trailer and something was said along the lines of " a 9 year old picking up a game killing cops and thinking thats ok" how would a 9 year old even get a game like that unless the parents dont care and use games as a baby sitter. i have a much younger brother and he wanted a Grand Theift Auto game and i told my mother that he is way too young to play a game like that. my mother didnt even realize that it is a mature game. parents need to wake up and stop blaming everything else for their neglect. i think its time the the video game cummunity take action and show the world that the industry is doing what it can but in the end its parents and family that are ultimately responcible for what their kids do. i mean case in point, and i do hate to use this tragety but it proves a point, in the collumbine massicer the 2 shooters were bowling when they decided to go killing. did anyone yell and scream about bowling being the cuase... no, did anyone ask why or how those kids got the guns...no, they just said video games were the cuase. funny huh

Please don't take this the wrong way, but basically here are the options open to the legislators:

1) Implement multi-billion dollar education, daycare, and rehabilitation programs to alleviate and offer alternatives to solutions that spur people to violent acts.

2) Find a scapegoat, blame it on that one source, and pat yourself on the back for having done a good day's work.

To address the issue of violence you have to look at poverty, self-esteem, mental health, outlets for aggression, and other such factors. But why do that, when you can pin the blame on something and call it a day?

[/ QUOTE ] Where there isn't gore, where the characters bounce around like pinballs, most moves are extremely exaggerated, and a surplus of particle effects bounce all over the screen. Some particles are big enough to fight "BAM" and "BOOM" in them.

Yet, under that, and sometimes not as easily seen, is the fact that fictional characters are being defeated so that other fictional characters can live on happily. The Faultline arc really shows this. Still.

Absolutely nothing in this game compares to real life violence. Nothing in FEAR, even when I hit slow mo and lob a grenade at an enemy and watch them break into pieces and an explosion of blood in frightening detail, nor any other game, compares to just watch people in real life. Maybe it's just me, but videogame violence only desensitizes me to more video game violence. I've blown up thousands of cars in various games, I've thrown my worshipers into walls and sacrificed their children before their eyes for my own power, yet...

...it still shocks me when I see a car accident. Even after all that Resident Evil, I find real diseases to be far more frightening. There's more than a small difference between what's real and what's fake. I wish more people could see this.

To be frank, when I saw the shot of Stateman in the trailer, I thought it heavily undermined the credibility of the film because of the very reason you give. How a game that espouses Superman-esque morals is in any way comparable to the [censored] and murder of everyone's favorite example of violent video games is beyond me.

And don't get me started on the logic or lack thereof behind the flight simulator-9/11 conspiracy theory...

Pretty much. The entire thing was just plain and simple fear mongering. I find it disgusting.

People always have to have a scapegoat. This time it's gaming. Thing is, it's up to the parents to police what the child is and isn't exposed to. If more parents would do that, this kind of crap would be history. If your child isn't ready for violence, don't expose them to violent types of media. Simple, no?

The damnedest thing about that flight simulator thing. I actually kept trying to fly certain planes in between the Twin Trade Towers. Most notably the only one I could get was a 737 which kept blowing up on the wings!

Ah yes, Flight Simulator 98...I must be a terrorist, or the game taught me how to be! Not like I'd try stunt flying a jumbo jet in real life, that's just crazy
