I'm sorry, but is this a sick joke? Seriously, are you listing this as a positive? I mean, anyone can slow down if they want to. I could stand around and chat, then sj, tp, or ss to my destination.

That's like saying "I like fire armor because it really let's me appreciate the newer ragdoll effects and I notice all those wonderful psi attacks".

Doesn't this seem off to anyone else?

You want people to like fly? Add in some epic feeling aerial combat. Give hover a resist to -fly. Make having true, unrestricted 3d movement actually mean something.

Other than GV, which used to require me to use my flight temp powers for easy navigation, there's never been a reason or a place where fly would have been more useful than sj or tp. Now w/ the GvE jump pack, I will only ever take fly if I'm tight on powers but want air sup (since it's such a great attack).

[/ QUOTE ]

No, it's not a joke. You clearly don't like fly and don't use it. I know myself and a number of my friends who have fliers really appreciate this aspect of it - it's safe and lets us relax between doing our herowork.

Don't blow stuff all out of proportion. Castle is posting here in his capacity as a player, to a fun thread; not as a dev, propagandizing.

I've never agreed with the 'I like flight because I can chat while flying' reason simply because SJ/SS/TP is so much faster that you can make a jump, land type and takeoff and still get there faster chatting just as much.

Super Jump and Fly tie for me. I just love bouncing around while waiting for others to get to a mission zone and I like the fire and forget of fly as well as just flying around for no real reason.

Next is invisibility.. yes I count invisibility as a travel power. The slowest but by far safest travel power mind you. This can be just a fun power and mixes well with teleport or super jump. Its a wonderful concept power. I often take it in conjuntion with some other travel power but not always.

Then would come teleport. It was the first travel power I ever tried. And with it I came to hate Dark astoria. I actually liked the power more in beta then on live for the simple reason falling and teleporting didn't stop your inertia.. and if you timed it right you could slide forward at insane speeds. It took skill and was a lot of fun to do.

Finally would be superspeed. Its not a bad power but its not one I take all the time. If I am not playing a speedster then I don't want superspeed. Its a decent power but is definately one I use only on concepts that dictate they have it.

In CoV I always take fly its build into every concept for CoV.

CoH while I may like a power over another power in the end the concept dictates which travel power I will take. I do know that fly is taken more then any of the others. Something just feels heroic/villianous about flying around.

I prefer Teleportation, because it fits into my character concept. However, nothing beats the feeling of my first flight. I went all the way to the top of the sky, then free-falled into a costume contest.

I like them all. Well, I want to like them all, but superspeed is one I take RARELY. for a few reasons.

1. In order to get it, I have to take hasten or flurry. And i'm one of the few people out there who's NOT a huge hasten fan. I don't like the firey fists i get, and since i've been playing mainly scrappers lately, hasten is NICE but hardly nessary, as i normally have a full attack sequince without it easily anyway. The other power to take is Flurry and it's just LAME. So to get superspeed, i have to pick between 2 powers i don't like... to get a travel power with no vertical... That's why only one of my toons has it, for concept reasons...

The other 3, I like equally. Even teleport. (I have a fairly top end machine and don't lag hardly at all when i use it, so it's FAST for me. And once you have a good key bind for it, you get blasing fast baby.) It's hard to pick a FAV. but it's prolly teleport to be honest. It's the rarest of the 4, has GREAT team utitity in recall friend, its fast... great in PvP... it just rocks all around IMO. Fly is easily second, and once we get new pickable fly anamations, may move up two #1 on style alone. Then 3rd is superjump. Its, just all around good. It's not as fast as teleport. It's not as easy as fly. But it's cheap, fast, and easy to use. It just a good bargon for a TP IMO.

I like superspeed. Sure, it may not have vertical, but it's damn fast, and I like getting to know Paragon from the ground, learning the paths and streets. A few jump enhancements here and there -- and now the jumpjet -- and the vertical isn't an issue.

TP is all right, but my computer isn't top-shelf so I lag and fall quite a bit. The sound effect also drives me batty during long jaunts to missions.

I take Fly on most of my toons, because it's flying, perhaps the most comic-booky of all powers. Plus, when the new animations come in, it'll be the prettiest, and with a few speed enhancements it's as fast as base superspeed. (I think.)

Superjump, for me, is pretty 'meh.' Don't get me wrong -- it's probably the most technically useful of all of them, having great speed, great maneuverability, and low cost -- but conceptually it doesn't interest me as it's implemented in the game. It almost seems too good. I'd be far more interested in it if it were more like an actual giant leap, where you basically launch yourself in a certain direction with less control. The fact that I can change directions several times back and forth in mid-leap breaks the illusion that it's a leap. It's just a personal concept irk, to be sure, but that's what I think.

I really hope that the rest of the travel powers get alternate animation choices like flight.

teleport. Because it was my first travel power and I can still remember porting up to a ledge on a tall building going: "OMG!! This is great!" Plus, sadly I played so much with it when I was up in a tall building in RL looking down I would think: "Ooo, I could port right over to that location on top of that building."

I like Super Jump because of its combination of speed and vertical movement. It's also handy in PvP. It's a maintenance power, though. It's difficult to chat when you constantly hold down the spacebar. (Yeah, I know...remap the key!)

I like Teleport due to it's speed and PvP benefits. It takes a lot of getting used to, though.

I like Superspeed mainly due to speed. I typically take it in combination with another travel power, though.

_Castle_, is there a Winter Lord's chance in Hades that we might ever see a unique 5th or 6th travel pool? Or is the travel power situation pretty much set in cement for the forseeable future?

[/ QUOTE ]youa re taking it intentionaly wrong, when he means is that fly dosent require any of the maintianence that the other powers do, unkeybound sj needs you to keep pressing the spacebar, tp needs to be retargeted, and superspeed needs to be maneuvered around obsticles and to handle verticles. fly, whiles slower is a very convenient power, and thats what he was saying.

anyho, for me fly is, as i said, the msot conenient, need a glowie in a caves mission? just saunter up to it. going into a zone where the enemies will stop you, float overhead and hope that no snipers notice you. my primary reason i dont use it a lot is because i prefer superspeed on a concept level. plus with wings i see myself respeccing a flier or 2. plus if you wnat to do shadow shard, this is the power.

sj is perfect, i usually have to keep myself from taking it based on not wanting to be fotm, but the height plus the speed make it a beauty.

tp is a great power that drives me and my less than optimal system insane, i have it for a few characters for concept reasons, and its pre-power tp friend is great for lifelining with my defender, but it is a cruel mistress for slower systems.

super speed is a pain in the butt due to its lack of verticle movement and i love it, it fits my characters concepts so i suffered through the no vert aspect of it. the jumppack is pure joy though for a superspeeder, with it, im planning on re-respeccing my main hero, not that ss is viable again. plus, running at a mission with orange flames coming from your feet just looks cool.

Exactly - remap the key

The problem with autojumping though is that it's too easy to get stuck on something when there's a lot of buildings around (balconies, awnings, etc.) And it definitely slows you down as well, as you can't optimally place your jumps to keep above obstacles. Flight is way easier!

I had played some 100+ levels of hero before I picked up Flight on one of my toons (I had taken SJ, Teleport, and SS already). It blew me away and it's my favorite travel power now

What would you suggest? Vehicles would be logical, the player character could morph into a car, helicopter, or plane. Doesn't seem to be on the drawing board. I wish it was.

Swinging across the city on a line is another comic book staple, but that also seems to be hard to implement (although I imagine the Marvel MMO will have it).

Shrinking and traveling via phone line, anyone?

I love them all except Super Speed. Too many memories of trying to go get a costume changed in Icon and not being able to stand it because of 400 people standing around with SS on. Or taking the tram to Talos and having my subwoofer explode for the same reason. Also I have a deep-seated prejudice against Hasten because it was the Flavor Of The Month for about 20 months (and arguably has been for another 12 on top of that). I have a character or two with Hasten/SS because I want to give it a chance. So far I still don't really like it though.

I love Fly, and SJ is very effective as well as hilariously appropriate for some characters, but in my heart of hearts Teleport is my favorite. Probably the thing I miss most about the pre-ED days is Teleport 6-slotted for range. It was a good feeling to be by far the quickest traveller in the SG. I guess in a way that (combined with Recall Friend of course) made up some for the guilt of making my friends team with my Swift/Sprint/Hurdle/Quickness MA/SR once in a while.

I dont care what uber player thinks flight is cool, in pvp its pretty useless. There are too many -fly powers that render you stuck on the ground wishing you had SJ. And who plays in FBZ? In pve its fairly decent if you like sitting in one place while you attack, because even 3 slotted you dont have the mobility that sprint has. Which is sad in itself. "Look I have hover! Oh wait, lemme turn it off so i can get anywhere." It provides no status protection that you get from acro, and with ED Is the slowest travel power. You can drop the Endurance on it all you want, but like devices, its becoming a thing of the past.

So, does "getting used to" include accepting that the red targeting reticle will stop you from teleporting every ten tries or so?

Seriously, I've been asking about this problem for years now, and no one's been able to tell me whether it's a bug or "working as intended". Patch notes claimed to have fixed "the teleport bug" a few months ago, but apparently that referred to the no-reticle-tp-just-fails bug, because the red reticle problem is unchanged for me.

I'm not positive, but it always seemed to me, that I got the red targeting recticle when I targeted a destination I wouldn't fit in. Kind of like a, "your head will be in the wall if you do that" or, "you will be scrunched like an accordian if you try to fit in there" warning. Not positive, but that's what it always seemed to me.

As for my favorite? I used to like SS, then I tried the respec trial when nobody on my team had recall friend....ouch. Took me about 45 minutes (no exaggeration) to reach the reactor- never took it again unless I already had a travel power. Otherwise, it depends on the character. I really like teleport for my defenders (recall friend, anyone?), fly for blasters...it's like kiting on crack...and up for grabs on anything else.

Yeah, the recent fix was a fix to the recent bug that had something to do with range enhancements, I believe. The Red Circle of Death is as strong as ever. No teleporting near walls or ceilings for us!

Personally, I wouldn't have a huge problem with it except I know for a fact that it doesn't have to be this way. Before the inertia fix lonnnng, long ago, you basically never saw the Red Circle. If you tried to teleport into a wall or ceiling or some other tricky piece of architecture, you just ended up near it - exactly as it should be today. I guess I pretty much accepted the Circle as payment for getting rid of conservation of momentum, which sucked big donkey parts far more than anything we have to suffer now. I would never ever ever ever ever go back, and I'm grateful for what we Teleporters have today. But it sure would be even nicer if that stupid circle, that serves no evident purpose, could be done away with.

still think the spuer speed should get a bit of a work up, like a minor force bubble that froms when you move so you auto avoid small things like other beings, or light pols or small low walls, maybe also add the ability to while running run over water asif on land, and up vertical surfaces like walls and buildings

but my fave is flight, it might be the slowest travel but it's so nice up there

I use a five button mouse for CoH and I got a zboard too (Yeah I'm spoilt but I aint bought any other games since CoH came out & I was getting 1 or 2 a month before then ).

I always put my travel power on the keyboard button 6 and sprint (or prestige sprint) on button 9. I then goto the options menu and use the run button on my keyboard for sprint and button 6 is just the right place for a quick fly/leap/teleport etc..

Using the 5 button mouse is the best tho, I use the side buttons for jump (or fly up) and down (fly down) and it just feels so natural now. I highly reccomend getting a mouse with those handy extra 2 buttons on the side, it makes travelling just so nice

I won't go into how I set up my Kheldians because just trying to remember the binds and how I set the keys up makes my head hurt but it does work brilliantly with the zBoard and 5 button mouse.
