Interesting... "I’m very happy with our new mantra, or our current mantra now – moving forward, is “Give the player what they want.” "

Posi's interview had WAAAAAAAAAAAY more information... this interview really... didnt have anything except a PVP type Mayhem Mission possibly coming after PVP raids happen, which is coming LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATER.

Things not said in this dialogue were the mention of updating Faultline as Boomtown has been updated

[/ QUOTE ]

whuh? As Boomtown has been updated? Does this mean that it'll be Boomtown that gets the facelift in I8 and not Faultline?

I may possibly be the only person who's not exactly looking forward to Safeguard Missions, especially after reading the description of it here.

If I read it right, it's basically War Wall Defender. Except more so.

Sheesh, that was a difficult read. Not because of the rough page-formatting or numerous sentence-structure errors, but more for flying all over the place in the interview itself. But I guess one can pick and read bits and pieces and get a good enough summary of where things are headed.

Also, does 'Give the player[s] what they want' have to do with doubling the padding on the Nerf-bat?

It will be interesting to see how they try to make these Safeguard missions as fun as Meyham missions. Cause that is going to be a huge factor.

Posted

Yeah, give the player what they want. hope so.
But I'm a little confused by his feelings toward bases. They really don't provide that much to the enviornment they've created.
This is a combat simulator. Sitting in a base is just not how this game works.
meh

Well... what did you all expect from a web site named "Girlz Game Too"?

yeah, I kinda suck at keeping things from being destroyed hero-side...

well, before I got Ice patch, at least

regardless, that doesn't sound as fun as mayhem missions, but I guess we'll see, won't we?

Well, this was after the Posi inteview which answered most quetions regarding I8. The purpose of the interview was just to give a more general direction of how things are going and the insight of Statesman himself regarding those directions. You can only ask the same questions regarding the next patch so many times.

As far as where it's coming from Roach, thanks for making my job that much easier.

Actually I like the protect the item from being destroyed missions but if I have to protect like dozens of items each mission it could get a bit old....

Can't I have bad things to break?

You can't please everyone, so lets concentrate on me.

Yeah, I was hoping that it would be a hero on a bad day... Rescuing the lady crossing the street from a run-a-way truck, then having to rush to a burning build, then having to save a kitten in a tree...

I'm thinking they've gotta have some things heroes can destroy, wouldn't be quite as fun if they didn't, but we'll see, he sounded very hyped about it when I talked to him, so I'm sure there are a couple suprises we're not expecting.

I'll admit that i found this interesting:

[ QUOTE ]
Vyktor: I guess it depends on where you look. I know a couple of, one villain group in particular, they want everyone on prestige. And they basically hand out Infamy to buy their stuff.

Statesman: We though that would be regular behavior. But it just isn’t. It isn’t, for whatever reasons.

[/ QUOTE ]

But the reason we've been given as to why we can't trade more than 100k at a time is specifically to deter this.

I'm confused.

What I got from it, States is surprised by player behaviour... frequently. About bases, about griefing, about alot of things.

Hrmm... maybe he needs to roll a lowbie alt on Freedom...

[/ QUOTE ]I think he did.... But I griefed him so bad in Atlas that he quit.

But not before he summoned a Kronos Titan on me somehow on a level 2.

Yeah, I'm not too keen on this "Safe guard" mission idea. I will hold my final judgement when it goes live.

I just don't see another war wall defender, time-capsule defense cape mission, or power generator respec tf type of mission anywhere near as much fun as mayhem missions are for villians.

What about heroes taking the offensive for once and going onto the Rogue isles and fighting their way to an Arachos base to destoy some "item of doom!" type missions?

Sure, maybe heroes shouldn't destroy citizen things, but the missions could be set up that arachnos has gotten word that heroes are infiltrating the islands to get to their base and so all the citizens are gone and there are a bunch of arachnos troops on the ground (like cops in mayhem missions), crates to destroy, grounded arachos flyers, create some arachos ground vehicles, etc... Now that would be fun!

"Statesman: I would’ve thought that bases would have gotten more attention, to be honest."

Even if bases where free and everything thing in it , they would still be boring. Running from one side of the base to the other isn't going to make people stop playing WOW and other MMo's.

Combo's
Loot
Skills
Crafting

This would make COH/COV fun for me and would get players attention IMO.

did he by chance announce that he's leaving for another game too?? *crosses fingers*

What he says doesn't bode well to me. Preventing destruction from happening? Every great once in a while it can be a challenge and might fun for people. An example, i thinkg, would be the preventing 30 Firbolg from Escaping mission in Croatoa. That type of prevention can get flustrating as hades. If they can't incorporate smashing objects or through obstacle into the mission itself, I predict that the safeguard missions will go over like a lead ballon.

Now what I would like to see would be having to get to a certain location to prevent a bomb from exploiding. Having to smash your way through walls or piles of stuff to make it there in time. Or Arachnos has developed this huge building sized Death Ray complex. The Ray is on a countdown to firing at Paragon City. There is no single vital spot. You have to start smashiing all of the equipment in the complex to disable it before the countdown reaches zero. That's the sort of thing I'm envisioning for safeguard missions. Smashing stuff with a purpose.

And could just as easily backfire with the players they -do- have.

it never ceases to amaze me that WoW type fantasy gamers STILL come in here asking to have all those garbage things from their hack n slash games brought in here. The *LACK* of loot, crafting, and skills is what makes CoH such a breath of fresh air compared to that tired old Diablo formula. Please go to WoW if you like that stuff, or break your keyboard, or forget your forum password.

I've been harping this on this for quite awhile now, but was a bit surprised there hasn't been much forum-chat about it. I mean, based on the boards, there's a bit of general dislike for protection missions like these (and don't even mention the Stop Firbolgs mish), and yet the very phrase 'Safeguard Mission' sounds like it has to contain a lot of these elements.

I don't mind protection missions; I typically find them a refreshing change. But I'm hoping the dev's don't come up with something that misses what puts the fun into Mayhem Missions: makin' stuff 'splode, and the crazy frantic pace.

As always, I'll take a wait and see approach.

I think I understand what he means base-side.

>.> The problem is, from a player's standpoint - only 1 person in the SG can actually edit and manipulate the base. So... that becomes problematic.

The other big thing I think there's a disconnect on via-bases...

There really *isn't* anything to do in them. If its built; all it can do is take your excess items, and let you teleport places...

My thoughts? (Personally?) I'd like to see the mission computer able to initiate a sort of "Base Safeguard" mission.

I'm not 100% sure *how*; but it'd be interesting to be able to have mobs attack your base - and thus base defenses would be useful; even for PVE only groups. (I may like PVE - but I surely don't expect everyone too; and sadly; thats the only thing bases are going to be good for beyond a couple basic functions).

I hope this means bases will be seeing lots of attention though - tons of POTENTIAL in them... not enough function.
