  1. No worries....none of us want it to end.
  2. Tim....great video...and...+1,000,000 for sneaking in a Wilhelm Scream. Thumbs up!
  3. For those of you that are curious, it was announced today that SWTOR's F2P option is going live on 11/15 (next Thursday).

    Announcement: http://www.swtor.com/info/news/news-article/20121108

If you haven't tried it, I heavily recommend giving it a shot. Running a class all the way up to level 50 without paying a cent is a great value - especially if you like anything Star Wars. The game has it's issues to be sure, but for free (alas with many incentives to buy from the in-game store) you should at least try it.
  4. Had to chime in - fantastic video, Evangel. The rotating scene in the Hero 1 capsule room was brilliant....and a very nice choice of music for the video as well.

Is this supposed to be a bad thing? Cuz it's not. You don't have to like these games, but if you want to keep any credibility, at least play them and/or represent them in a somewhat unbiased fashion (as opposed to "if it's not CoX, it's the suxx0r"). The fact is, our beloved game looks like it's ending and people are looking for viable alternatives from a somewhat (can't believe I'm saying this) trusted community. They need actual informed opinions - not B.S. hyperbole from trolls with an ax to grind.

That's pretty darn close. We know based on the August 8th earnings report that CoH made about $2.5M dollars last quarter. That that number, divide by $15, and the divide by 3 (months), and you get a number that would be earned by about 56,000 VIP subscribers at the monthly rate. Of course, some of that revenue was made off of free/premium players making purchases, as well as VIPers paying for points above their stipend. And some players buy longer term subscriptions at a discounted price, etc....

Either way, we know that we certainly had something less than 56,000 subscribers last quarter. However, regarding profitability.....well, as you've said, lots of speculation there.
  10. Meh....new screen looks like photoshopped in-game assets akwardly posed for a screenshot.

I think this is the real problem with Brandon Routh's performance in Superman Returns. When I see it now, knowing what I know about the film, he seems like Routh playing Reeves playing Superman, rather than Routh's own interpretation of Superman. Trying to duplicate someone else's performance is never going to work out as well as doing something original; that's why we have actors in the first place.
Agreed. And it's funny, I really didn't care at all for Routh's Superman (just so bleh), but his Clark was a perfect tribute to Reeve's Clark. He really nailed it, and at times the resemblance was uncanny.

Superman III is just.....bizarre. Reallllly bizarre. And extremely watchable (minus some of the Richard Pryor stuff - didn't age well). But the whole evil Superman stuff, and the ensuing fight between Clark's two identities in the junkyard is almost surreal. And I've always like to think of the sentient computer at the end as sort of a nod to Brainiac.

Anyway - yes: Christopher Reeve's superman is iconic. If there really was a Superman, I'd want him to be like the one portrayed by Reeve.

Thank you for coming to see me, Character. I've made a very impressive breakthrough in both my language and my research. I wanted to make sure you were the first to experience me.

I have taken the vial of blood: from Montague. The blood is the cure for the Rikti virus in humans. In new words, I discovered a cure for the Lost.

Recent humans are the only terms affected.

....pretty much "spoils" the fact that Rikti are, in fact, humans.
  15. Agreed...that was a nice twist.

I also enjoyed the mission with the Warriors: rather than static spawns (besides the one story boss), the entire map was filled with patrol mobs. It was actually kind of crazy and frantic....and a real pain on my AoE-lovin' Archery Blaster. I'd try to engage a few Warriors in a RoA alpha as they moved around, and the next thing I knew I had guys wanding into the fight left and right, behind me, etc.... At +2/4, it felt kind of like a horde-mode version of CoH. Nice change of pace using the existing gameplay. Funny what a difference mob placement/behavior can make....

Kinda missing the point. You may consider RoA to be OP, but without RoA, Archery plummets from a top 3rd blaster set (maybe? experts may disagree) to a bottom of the barrel set, due primarily to it's lethal damage (most resisted in the game) and accuracy secondary effect (pretty much useless, these days, and totally useless in the IO high-level game). See Techbot's post below yours....he gets it.

I kinda wonder the same thing about Archery and Rain of Arrows. The strength of the power (and the set, really, let's be honest) is it's crashless nuke that is up every spawn or so. With this nukeless normalization, will RoA lose this distinction?

I'm all for buffing the T9s and blasters in general, but I'd hate to see Archery plummet even further (with its lol-lethal damage and weak secondary effect) down the desirability chain as an unintended result of this. Suppose I could at least hope RoA gets a damage buff outta this....
  18. Agree.

It seems a lot of newer MMOs are going with smaller "normal" (i.e., non-raid) teaming design. CO, STO, SWTOR, DCUO all have 4-5 person "normal" team size caps. I like it, myself: more role impact, more consequences for good or bad player performance, less particle effects.

However, one bad apple has a lot more impact on the team, which is a big downside for PUGs. One of the advantages of being able to build 8-man teams here in CoX for normal content is that almost any combination of ATs is gonna faceroll the map, and you can endure a bad player or two much more easily. And the beauty of it is you can choose which size team you want to build (TFs excepted), so everybody's happy.
  19. I've always thought of Anakin's first step over the line as his slaughter of the Tusken Raider camp (murdering women, children, etc....). No suprise there. Another baby step, I suppose, is keeping his marriage to Padme as secret from the Jedi Order.

But for me, his actual moment of full-on-crossing-over is when he murders Dooku. The entire fight between Dooku and Anakin at the beginning of Part III is a mirror of Luke's fight with Vadar in Part VI. The scene where the Luke/Anakin fight Dooku/Vadar across the screen while the camera tracks horizontally is nearly shot for shot identical in both movies (III and VI), and so is the music. After Luke takes Vadar's hand, he fights off the Emperor's influence and his own rage to spare Vadar and declare himself "a Jedi Knight, like my father before me".

Anakin - well, the punk just cuts off Dooku's head. Hello, Dark Side, and game over. The confronation with Windu and the spiral down to murdering the younglings was inevitable after that point.

Read that quote out loud. It just sounds so...I dunno...rote. If I want to worry about putting a 'new system of government' into place, I'll watch the news. And if the devs are committed to spending a majority of their time stuffing in more Praetoria zones for enough content from 30-50 (i.e., past First Ward), I'll be exiting stage left (again). It's not just content I want to play. Purely a personal choice....but one that I'm not entirely alone in making.

Expounding a bit: I think First Ward represents some of the best stories and execution of those stories in game...

    but,

I don't think I'll run them more than thrice total. The atmosphere and genre-sidesteps that many of the arcs take are quite far afield from the superhero and supervillain content I prefer here. In away, many of the arcs feel like an update to what Striga IMO was originally supposed to represent: an homage to horror comics. But First Ward is with a twist: it's more of an homage to post-apocalyptic horror fiction and film (not counting the Master Midnight exception) rather than many comic sources. A well done homage, but one that really steps too far afield for what I'm after and in terms of gameplay is already well covered by both other MMO and SP titles.
You've said, quite well, what I've been feeling since GR went live. I've spent far more time in those 'other' superhero games over the past year because the content here (i.e., Prateroria zones and trials) gets farther and farther from traditional superhero/villain stuff that I play these games for. I realize that one of the strengths of comics is the ability to easily bounce from genre-to-genre (sci-fi, horror, action, magic...it all fits), but loitering in one cliche (i.e., the Goatee Dimension) for far to long turns this strength into....well, a weakness. The quality and creativity of these zones and arcs is quite good, but I no longer feel like I'm playing City of Heroes. YMMV.

Add my voice to those that wish for a quick return to non-Prateorian content.

Gotta disagree with that last sentence. Shaw has repeatedly handled haymakers from Colossus without any problem. Spidey a full step or two down from Piotr - if Shaw can handle Colossus' punches, he can easily handle Spidey's. If I recall my TSR Marvel Superheroes RPG:

    Colossus: STR75 (Monsterous)
    Iron Man/Vision/She-Hulk: STR50 (Amazing)
    Spidey: STR40 (Incredible)

    Yeah...I went there.

How good is a name like Cyclops when you team with another Cyclops every other day?

I fully support the idea of releasing names of characters who are no longer in use on inactive accounts. I see absolutely no reason to allow multiple people to have the same name.
I see absolutely no reason to NOT allow multiple people to have the same name. We can have the same exact costumes and powers already.

I play "over there" and have some fairly iconic, if bland by your definitions, names. I've never come across another Pulsar, Wildcat, Ranger, Shellhead, Geo Mage, Brainstorm, or Maelstrom since launch. Are some of these shared? Probably. Will I see one of them one day. Maybe. Will I freak out about it? No.

The great thing about a system like this, is if your unique name really is important to you, you can keep calling yourself Dechs Kaison, etc.... and you're going to be fine. Stay away from the Red Eagle's and Superior Man's, and you'll still get to be a snowflake.

It's probably not likely that this is on the dev's radar, and that's fine. But, if this ever came around, it would make naming all my new Praetorian characters a lot easier....

(Also - they have a name filter "over there" as well, and you're not likely to be able to take Cyclops, or Wolverine, or Batman, etc.....)
  24. Interesting thought: some folks are hypothesizing that possibly CoV will gain 'population' from the ability to switch sides from Hero to Villain. In other words, a large number of players would roll up Hero ATs and take them to the dark side and play over in CoV zones. I have no data to back this up, but my perception has always been the other way around - that more players have been vocal on the forums displaying excitement at the thought of bringing Villaian ATs (notably Brutes, but also Corruptors and Masterminds) to Paragon City.

If that ends up being true, you'd end up with even more of the player base spending time in CoH zones, further reducing any incentive for the developers to spend lots of time on CoV zones.

Of course, there are folks dying to take a Scrapper or Defender (etc...) villain-side too. Who knows....just have to see how that plays out.

I think moving it to making people wait a full year to get their next vet reward is one of the worst ideas I think I've ever heard a fellow vet suggest, and frankly, I'm quite suprised at how flippant some of y'all are about it.
    /signed

I think some folks are forgetting that the Veteran's Reward system is, uh, for Veterans. It's extra incentive/thank you/whatever for staying on for so long and contributing to the game's long-term success. It's also, in theory, motivation to keep your account from lapsing.

Yeah - newbies will take awhile to catch up on these later ones, and it's very likely that somebody starting today may never reach a 66 month award (CoH2 one day?). That's okay....that's not the point of the rewards. I'm pretty sure I managed to get my first several 50s before there was a Veteran Reward system, and I'm sure new players can get there without those rewards too (heck, with XP smoothing, debt reduction, patrol experience, etc... it's even easier). Many of the rewards actually help others on the team that may not have the award (Assemble the Team, Reveal, Base Items).

You don't want to isolate your new players by putting super-cool unattainable things in the Vet system and it's arguable that may have crossed that line at times, but it's not like they are taking away anything from new players. The new player experience today is much better than what somebody getting a 66 month rewards this month experienced with their first 'toon (ED/I5 comments aside, natch).

I just rolled up my first Flight-at-level-6 alt last week....and it was pure win.
