Issue 7: Patron Arcs

As for my personal opinion, the TEST server exists to check things out. We can try out each power individually, wait for others on the baords to post how each power works in practice and I'll make my decision.
I wont come and complain on the boards for a mistake I made demanding free months or demanding the devs shower me with respecs. I accept mistakes I make. We all do it. The test server is there to do our best to ensure we dont make a mistake.

I love this game. I almost never complain. But this time I feel I need to.
Patron choice being permanent? Bad, but perhaps necessary.
Having to chose a patron? Very bad. I'm sorry, but my Mastermind is an evil genius with plans of world-domination and an ego the size of a galaxy. In-character, he would never, NEVER take a patron. From the sound of it, I'm going to have to break character. I want to play an archvillain who's trying to take over, not an apprentice of a bigger villain!
[/ QUOTE ]
You are not forced to do any of the Patron content.

So, are there going to be any non-patron APP's availble? I have no interest in taking a power pool that can't be changed when it get's changed into something I no longer enjoy, or the powers don't perform as advertised.
As for the hard numbers, thats a good idea, but if you're going to put the tech in the game to display them, don't go at it half-(word that filter will delete)'ed. Do it for all the powers in CoX, make it an option that can be turned off or something, but just give us the information. We can handle the numbers, the efforts of people like Circeus and Arcanaville show that.

What if you guys make changes to the Patron powers after we've selected them based on the hard data (and I presume that means ALL the numbers?)?
Nerfs, buffs, etc.
What if we want to change then?

We all know of the Test Server, I've actually spent 4+ hours there today playing around with builds. Problem with the Test Server is that it only works for things that they plan to implement.
So what happens when sometime down the line they decide Mako's sets are too strong or they want to change how one of the powers work - whoever has Mako can't decide to pick another patron. The test server doesn't solve that.

I'm with you Cobaltix. They've added stuff before, like the respec trial, that allowed us to not be locked into poor choices for the entire life of the character. I'm not sure they'd completely lock us into content, the way this sounds.
I'm waiting for more info.

Yes, but there is a difference between Patron, Powerset and Powers being permanent and Patron & Powerset being permanent but Powers within the Powerset being mutable or Respec-able.
Granted, the difference is minor but it is observable.
EDIT: Bolded the operative words.

They haven't yet said HOW MANY powers are in the patron pools.

Considering the Story Arcs/Missions, possible badges, titles, and costume options that go with the Patron you choose, it'd be hard to respec out of that. Not that I mind. Just saying.

Well if they decide to CHANGE something that players didn't originally sign onto doing, then they're obviously gonna give you another choice of choosing your Patron.
That idea is obviously unfair, the devs would obviously do something about it.
How about just changing secondaries? A little secondary change never hurt anyone...

Patron Powers are truly permanent. This powerset, once chosen, is as much a part of your character as your Name, Primary Powerset, Secondary Powerset, Body Type, and Origin.
There is currently no way for us to let you re-spec out of them and into a different one. This is because it is tied to specific content for that Patron.
Because of this, hard numbers are given, in-game, about the powers and what they do before you even choose which arc you wish to partake (and will most likely be available on the website as well).
[/ QUOTE ]
Color me very disappointed.
And how exactly are we supposed to plan on future power changes, like ED?
Let's say my Energy Melee Brute does plenty of damage, so I go with Ghost Widow for some particular defensive powers. Then Energy Melee gets hit with the nerf bat, and suddenly I wish I had taken Black Scorpion for added offense.
Posi, I don't know about you, but my CoX radar is already telling me you guys will have to change this mechanic down the line. In fact, I predict that by March 2007, a way to change your patron will be in development, on Test, or live.
Then how about waiting until it hits Test and see how many powers or how much flexibility you have with doing a respec? Your answers will come when I7 hits Test and the devs clear things up better. Instead of jumping to conclusions, see what happens before claiming they completely screwed something up you dont have a clue what it is yet.
I reserve judgement on things like this until I actually see and try it. Then I make a clear post for or against it rather then just bluntly saying they dropped the ball.

I agree that we should all not get hysterical. But here is my very obvious worry: Powers GET changed. And a Patron Pool Power can be changed irrevocably through no fault of the player (who EXTENSIVELY tested on the test server) so that they are stuck with a set that is ruined for them.
As a pure personal example, I first went with the Ice pool for my Blaster. It was okay, I tested extensively. It was crap for PvP and the changes that were made. I switched to Fire because it was the clear PvP pool power for me.
The way this game changes is so fast and drastic sometimes, through no fault of the player.
Do you know how many powers are in a Patron pool? Please enlighten me as I dont recall any dev saying how many powers are in each one.
This space is intentionally left blank.
[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]
I think I said something way earlier in the thread about hopefully each set would enough variable powers to work with anyone, I hope. That was before Posi decided to visit and we went into frenzy mode.
I'm fine with missions, badges, titles, costumes options and whatnot being tied to the patron, as long as the patron is mostly a color or visual effect to the powers. I mean, if each patron pool basically has the same powers, a couple sheilds, a couple blasts, a couple buff/debuffs, whatever, then it shouldn't be too tough.
[ QUOTE ]

It doesn't matter how many powers are in the set, the point remains you can't choose a different one down they line should you feel the need to.
And it's not because they want it that way - it because they didn't take it into account when designing the content.
The only fact we have is that Poz said you can't change what you take. The majority opinion is this bad.
We do not need to go back and forth over whether it's bad or not, since we'll never agree and we don't need another YES NO YES NO YES NO YES NO fight for ten pages.
Poz, no offense, but you need to clarify the point if the Patron CONTENT is locked in, or if the POWERS are locked in.
I think no one will mind if the powers/badges etc. are locked in, since they're on the level of AT/Origin. However, locking in Powers that may change is bad, unless it also comes with a solid guarantee that the Devs won't change the powers. Ever. Until a means for *US* to change them is available. Fair is fair, heroes can change on a lark, etc.
Please clarify.
Everyone else, don't be stupid. I'm (as I'm sure many others) don't want a flame war but solid answers on all this.
Thanks.

A non-Arachnos patron set would be AWESOME!
Aren't there Rogue Arachnos?

As for a Betrayal Trial...I was thinking there would be something like that.
For example, if you choose Ghost Widow you can either:
Defeat Wretch/Ghost Widow (or Scirocco, Silver Mantis/Captain Mako or Black Scorpion).
OR
Defeat 'x' Fortunataas (or Mu, Coralax or [Black Scorpion minions])
