Quote:I'm just making my thoughts known. I know the devs are good people. But you have to post strongly to get their attention. You can't just sit and wait. I'm not angry or going to go forum postal. In fact, I've been pretty zen about Blasters since when I gave up hope after seeing Defiance 2.0.The Paragon Studios team, for better or for worse, believes very strongly in incremental development. They'll want to see just how game changing their current marks are before they go further... Hopefully, they'll see the information they need in beta and will be able to work from that. If not, they've already committed to continuing to work on the matter if they need to.
If you feel you can't trust that, then there probably isn't anything at all they can say that will give you more confidence.
But seriously. I've been playing since 2004. My first character was a Blaster. My first 50 was a Blaster. I was the designated Blaster on my team of four via my old D&D buddies. I died and died and died and died and then face-planted some more. It was a running joke that the Blaster was the redshirt on the team no matter what we did.
I've been waiting for 8 years. The increments have been fractional. Compared to the improvements Dominators/Scrappers went through. -
Quote:I understand your point. I guess what I'm trying to communicate is that when you built a Scrapper the archetype really fulfilled the vision of a superhero game.It is one charge of Aim and it is possible they might change it to one charge of Build Up. So yay?
Well, Captain Atom for sure has some pretty impressive mitigation properties.
Storm can melt bullets and other objects before they reach him (which is why I was thinking resistance or absorb for /Fire, but cauterizing wounds ala Healing Flames works conceptually as well) and cure himself of poison.
And really, all comic book heroes can take a beating, and then, often during the evil soliloquy, recover enough to win the day!
Not so much with a Blaster. With the way mezzes work in this game, Blasters are always at a disadvantage compared to every other archetype. Seriously, Dominators get a break free power and anti-mezz while Blasters now have /regen. Big whoo. That does nothing when you're shut down by Thorn mage bosses and then repeatedly blown to smithereens.
We all know that feeling. It's been a running joke about face-planting since the beginning of this game. I remember when all the Blaster players on the forums rose in mock revolt with the "I'm A Blaster..." posts.
Again, if the devs really want to make this game _more_ popular being small-minded about Blaster changes won't help at all. It's what frustrates new players. Believe me. I try to get so many friends to play. And when they fire up a Blaster and get completely flustered playing their character they get frustrated. Then they roll a Scrapper. The way Blasters play is an antithesis to the vision of Blasters by new players. -
Frankly I'm very underwhelmed. I understand that Blasters shouldn't be made on par damage-wise or survivability-wise with other archetypes.
But will these changes make Blasters anymore fun? Look, do the devs seriously want to grow the fanbase and subscribers of this game? This won't do it, at all.
First, for new players Blasters and Scrappers fit the classic superhero wish fulfillment promise of the game. Then you actually play CoH and it becomes obvious Blasters fail on every aspect.
To wit:
1. The new snipe requirements. Why such a large percentage? You know why the Diablo games are so popular? Because the short descriptions fit the powers exactly. You see a blast power, it's a real blast power without all the caveats and prior requirements. You know what you get. You can see it immediately.
Why can't it just be one charge of Build Up or Aim? You have to actually work to get Snipe to be what people actually wanted Snipe to be instead of a crippled, boring, cumbersome, monstrosity of a pathetic snipe power it is.
2. The new /regen. So now we have heal over time power. Wow, that really makes me feel more blastworthy. I mean, when I think of the Human Torch or Captain Atom I immediately think of their phenomenal regen powers.
The most cumbersome aspect of being a Blaster is getting shut down, mezzed, knocked back and confused to oblivion by the most routine mobs and then just faceplanting after all that indignity because you _can't_ do anything while being mezzed, confused, knocked backed.
I'd rather have a click break free and brief a click phase/defense power. Instead we are getting more layers added onto a stinking pile of Defiance 2.0. -
A shadow dragon wouldn't be bad for Dark Control pet.
-
Quote:Any guesses on what the final power will be? I'm assuming it'll be a pet right? I'm hoping a Night Dragon or some Cthulu like creature. Anything but Fluffy 2.A breakdown of the Darkness Control set has already been posted (Minus the tier9 power which hasn't been announced)
It's not a port, the only power in the set that already exists in the game is Fearsome Stare. Everything else is new.
Doms will also get Dark Assault to go with it (and Controllers will get Dark Affinity, a variation of Dark Miasma).
There's also no mention at all of it being tied to Dark Astoria 2.0 in any way.

Quote:You know, I really don't have a problem with this. It's because you can get it later with empyrean merits. Unlike the ITF, where you have to finish the ITF successfully to get the armor and swords, here you don't have to finish the new trial to get the recipe. The drop is just a little story-based / gameplay reward. If we are getting this drop as a "representation" of Maelstrom losing his pistol, why not have it as a 100% drop to SOMEONE in the trial? Obviously, someone went and scooped it up. 4% per player for an aggregate of 7.84% max per instance (as you said, 2 per successful trial) is an absurdly low percentage for a cosmetic option. Didn't the player base already go through this with previous costume recipe drops? Additionally, while I approve of the notion behind someone "scooping" it up in through only the iTrial... we kick the crap out of Maelstrom multiple times through the Alignment system... Why gate this cosmetic item behind an even more restrictive drop rate than PvP IO's?
Have two recipes drop per successful instance... if you want, have it be that the recipes aren't awarded until completion of the trial. But don't place this miniscule chance out there. Please, Positron, this will set a bad precedence.
*I say this with having only 2 DP toons, and little to no interest in grabbing this recipe.
Must we always gnash our teeth and bring out the Frankenstein mobs for every quirk in the gameplay rewards/loot mechanic? -
Quote:Your best bet leveling is to latch onto any TFs, SFs or Trials running. There are so many of them, pay attention to the TF channels on a particular server and there's always one being announced. The ITF alone lets you start participating at 35 and you can level like crazy with that. Plus all the bonuses, drops and salvage you get on a real Task Force instead of the AE.Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I actually have a CEBR and the map i was running was mostly melee/smashing damage. I was just trying to see if it would be possible to powerlevel a blaster like I'm doing with a brute. But as the damage cap is a lot lower (225%?) than a brute (675%) I just can't kill them in time before i run out of inspirations (stacking dmg, def and res to the caps). If you can think of a way to get that kind of damage out from a blaster that would be cool.
Completely agree on the cones, its bad enough getting the right angle to get enough for mobs for good damage, let alone trying to rotate the ToHit debuff on them.
Main reason I'd rather PL, is due to the fact not many of my friends play and pugs can be so hit or miss when leveling. My highest char I've levelled properly is a 35 Fire/Rad Troller and 35 FF/Elec defender which seemed to take an actual age. Managed to get my CEBR to 22 in just 2-3 hours or so (with no previous AE experience or anything else really heh). I've spent many hours lvling chars on other games and I've just come back to this as stop gap before D3 comes out so don't want to spend the entire time levelling -
Quote:It all depends on what you are building for.Im sure this has been covered, but I need some opinions...or a redirect to a previous post.
Thanks!
You usually have the big 3:
Recharge
Defense
Damage
Then a few others, such as End Mod if you are Electric/Electric or some such.
I like to try for Recharge/Defense. So, Thunderstrikes, Decimations, Purples, LotGs, Reactive Armor, Touch of Death. -
Quote:Drain Psyche trumps anything in the Dark Secondary. Not that I think Dark is bad but you're asking for the "best" blaster.I wish there were more non elemental attacks in Blaster pools. But when life gives you lemons... Okay, I did an experiment last night, Fire/Dark. Took him through 6-7 DFB. Wow, the difference between him and the NRG/NRG Blaster I leveled there is nothing short of extreme. I felt like I was personally killing half the mobs while the rest of the team just mopped up. Probably wrong there, But it was a way different feel than Nrg/Nrg.
Now, Dark secondary fits my concept, but I love making new characters. I have seen Fire/Mental, Fire/Elec, Fire/Ice all mentioned above. How does Dark compare to those, or why are they better? I think I see it, Mental has 2 Aoes, plus the AoE self regen/recov. Its first attack is ranged. So when held/slept you can still spam a 3 attack chain no matter what. Dark is mostly ST, and while I love the damage buff, it requires PB, and that's not a thing I want required, even if I plan to play this in a lot closer than my nrg/nrg.
Again, Fire/MM/Foce of Nature. Once you reach level 44 and you actually planned for hitting the soft cap you will absolutely see the difference. All those sweet AoEs and buffs working together with the fast, hard hitting recharge of Fire. -
Quote:With the new build flexibility with inherent Stamina, etc. now it's really hard to justify skipping Hasten.I see the recharge bonuses with Energy Aura now. Is it ok to skip Hasten? Will I still be ok?
Remember, at the 40-50s on, there are TONS of stuff that debuffs recharge. Nasty EBs and GMs. You want Hasten to counteract that. -
Quote:Easy.I have solo'd villain side multiple times on Brutes, every story arc. I am wondering how hard it would be to do that with a Blaster, and Blueside. Every story arc, every mission? I do tend to set at -1/+0, just for speed, and I already have to shut off Experience earning often.
What would be the best Blaster for doing this?
Fire/MM/Foce of Nature/Incarnate Barrier. Get Combat Jumping and Aid Self. Sprinkle in self bubbling if needed after Level 41.
Get every defense you can. Soft-cap range. Grab Archmage, Geas, Portal Jockey.
Build Envenomed Dagger, always keep one extra recipe for it and salvage at all times.
Foce for when chips go all down. Hit Barrier. On tough foes, use Envenomed Dagger to kill their regen. Go to town.
Use MM buffs as needed. -
Ahh got it. Thank you everyone. It never entered my head that the Devs could bifurcate the different character models to make one for pay and one for free. That's pretty mind-blowing for some reason to me because I thought all the models would be included in the character creation.

So what's the heck is a "Huge Avatar"? I tried searching through this entire thread but haven't seen it discussed. Anyone know?

With the new Swoon emote, why not jump into the craze!

Quote:Yup, he knocked into the wall with his crane kick. And it was awesome! While fighting Maelstrom during some missions, he's whipped out some Martial Arts moves on me. That makes me hopeful that a MA secondary is on the horizon. He is a Dual Pistols, Blaster right?
Then I thought I wish I had that for my dual pistols blaster. Dangit! -
I'm not knocking Titanic Weapons because I luv me some weapon sets but on a pure speculation level, I was thinking the Devs would go with some sort of form-shifting or power-shifting powerset because it would be wholly unique to the game.
For example, an animal form-shifting power where you get to transform like Khelds into a defensive form, a range form, a melee form, AoE control form and the like. Keeping in mind the graphics limitations of the engine, the forms wouldn't be too large or elaborate such as four-legged rhino or something. You could do it with elements too. A fire range form, fire tank form, fire control, etc.
Or something like Ultra Boy from the Legion of Superheroes. I've always been the opinion that best balanced powersets were the more "clicky" ones like /regen and /ninja. Each power, mostly, is of a limited span that had a specific purpose in a battle. So for the "Ultra Boy" powerset, with a heavy damage melee, a range form, a heavy resistant form with no damage, etc. and then you would be constantly switching forms to deal with each situation with each form having its own weaknesses. Others more creative than me have explicated these powersets before.
I guess what I'm saying, very long-winded like, is that with Freedom coming I thought the Devs would be coming up with new powersets that would blow people's minds and nothing like the standard combos we've been seeing since Day 1. Remember, the Khelds came out of left field too. I'd never imagined when I started CoH that we would have something akin to Warshades and their abilities in game. We don't have to be limited to the standard combo/combo pattern in creating powersets.
Again, that being said, I am looking forward to making my Sephiroth clone with a gigantic long katana -
Quote:I don't think powerset respecs will ever happen because it will require a ton of developer work and not enough payoff. The limited number of folks who really want this option and is willing to pay a significant sum of money to justify the development costs is very niche and small. This is literally the only reason I would support powerset respecs. Being able to keep badges that a new character would be locked out of. The anniversary badges should have been account wide badges.
I do wish there is a way to transfer your badges to a new alt though. I think that might be a much easier way to cut development time down as a feature.
Now that I think about it, if the Devs can put in a mechanism that transfer your badges and create some very unique story arc for changing powersets it would be justifiable. Like Father Time reverses your experience and you are forced to go through unique challenges earning new powers along the way. You could tie it into a very original storyline. Or Crey stole your memories and mutated your powers. Something like that. -
Quote:It is kind of strange they went with a new melee set as one of the two new powersets in the game. Very out of left field to me as I thought they would be releasing a new ranged attack powerset, either with proliferation or something else. Something that would really take advantage of the enormous leaps in graphics that has happened in the past 3 years.I realize that there are many people out there ecstatic about this new set.
Unfortunately I'm not. There are so many other more interesting power sets they could have done and didn't.
I am sorta worried about moving around while people have these things out. Stuff this size is going to make getting through doors on maps even harder...it's tough now with big spawns and people standing in door ways...this will make it worse...and then there's the people who will go strutting around with these things in Wentworths to show off.
I'm also not all that sold on Time Manipulation. I mean the idea is OK but there are more interesting sets that could have been done.
So my basic reaction to the announcements is 'Meh', not much for me here.
I'm cautiously optimistic but was wanting something much more unique as a powerset. I thought the Devs would be satisfied with what's out there now. Who knows?? Can't wait to see it though. -
Quote:Then maybe how about Korvus, in a "western" comic from "Marvel" in a very popular title, namely the X-Men.Silver Samurai uses a normal looking sword for what a samurai would use. A Cloud type sword just looks asinine.
And yes, I'm done. Maybe.
http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix4/korvusshiar.htm
Big swords aren't limited to just those strange "anime" and "manga" sources. I would also advise you to look up the Odinsword. Perhaps the MOST ridiculous gigantic sword in comics
Oh, right...
To use the "realistic" argument when we have in western comics a guy with robotic armor, War Machine, with the ability to fly and unload with a 20mm Vulcan Gatling gun on his shoulder, and still stay aloft(!) is a specious argument indeed.
Why is is that we accept superheroes with gigantic hand canons that are supposed to pass for firearms but a gigantic sword doesn't?
See...
If you're argument is that Marvel, DC and western comics don't use gigantic swords or characters use "realistic" weaponry it's a very bad argument. -
I got purged! Me, ME!! Such a blow to my fragile ego
-
Quote:Maybe they'll remake it into a co-op zone? With coming storm and all. One can only hope...Well, if it's to introduce the dev-mentioned low level zone revamps, then it's probably all hero-side. The villain-side zones were not created in the crazy old model of zones-without-a-purpose.

Quote:One pet tanking on Rom won't give enough of a heal boost to overcome the DPS of both you and the Vicky. Considering she can crit and placate with dual blade DPS, she's probably the best pet to use on Rom.The potential problem with vicky on Rom is that she becomes a source of healing from the heal nictus. And how long can she survive the AoE pulses from the damage nictus (I forget if those are autohit or not, but they are brutal either way)?
Edit: for clarity, I'm asking on both counts. I don't really know how well it would work, I'm not naysaying.
I don't have the numbers but I've seen my Vicky take down a boss level Commander and his missile barrage on a Lambda run without issue. Vickies are sick@!! -
You can save a slot by one-slotting Super Speed. It's plenty fast on it's own by default and you already have Fly as a travel power. So just put the Botz in Super Speed, place that extra slot somewhere where a sweet bonus would come into play and call it day.
I would agree the ITF is an unusual test for alt uberness. Usually, it's if you can solo AVs, take down a Rikti Pylon or solo the Scrapper Test. If you can take down the ITF by yourself you would be in rarified air, especially on a Blaster. For all my 50s, I think only my Brute could solo the ITF. My scrapper wouldn't be able to withstand the Nictii (Nictuses?).
Now with Incarnate powers added in, it should be a whole lot easier. At Tier 3s on all, you've level-shifted to the point where the ambushes won't phase you. You can get a Victoria boss to tank Rom and go to town on him with your blasts. Barrier will be there for those emergencies with a nice Judgment AoE to decimate the ambushes.
Yeah....hmmm. Think I might roll a Fire Blaster
