Sounds promising, but how are inventions relevant to heroes? Is the idea that folks can invent temporary powers through technology, science and magic? Or are we talking making unique enhancements in lieu of unique temp powers (which I'm assuming is near next to impossible given how long it takes to design a temp power's effects).

Since the "inventions" concept is out there, can we *please* get a 1-2 sentence brief on the general concept? Or is this a big-kept secret for the next shelf-game: City of Tinkerers?

Jonyu, poz and Positron are working on an 'Invention' system, which branched off of the Skill System work. The 'Salvage' system used in bases is an offshoot of the skills system design as well.

Unfortunately, I don't think anything more in depth than that is scheduled at this time.

I love Salvage inventions and I, for one, feel it is fine as it is.

However, it would be nice to see more craftable objects.
Any plans?

And so we are left to wonder if we should take the word of the 'Cryptic Studios Creative Director' or the 'Cryptic Game Designer' (or maybe we should just wonder if the word "shelved" means different things to different people). Personally, I've decided that Cryptic forgot to issue forth the latest memo on what to tell the gaming public about the skills system. I guess I should be happy that my biggest complaint with Cryptic is the off-again/on-again Skill systems... I just find it hard to believe NO ONE can make Skills fun. Hire me! I'll make them fun! Heck, I'll give ya my idea for free!

((added note: this could have been a nice thread, too bad there are a few annoying posters that feel they need to repeatedly fill the thread with garbage -- funny at first isn't so funny the second plus time around))

_Castle_, is it understood with the Devs that a lot of people wanted a Skills system for some Out-Of-Combat entertainment? From the sounds of it, Invention uses salvage, which is earned slowly with combat. Has this been considered? Is there any non-combat plans in the works?

Same.. For all of my characters enhancements don't really exist.

My RP switch goes OFF the moment I have to do anything with enhancements. Buy.. sell.. organize. At the very least I ignore the names and reasons behind most of the enhancements. My tech characters can make fine adjustments.. sure.. but some of that crap doesn't fly.

I treat enhancements as they really are. A poorly thought out game mechanic that is in the place of something that would be less damn annoying. That is just me though. I really don't like anything about enhancments. I don't like having to scrounge up cash for them. I don't like having to run back to the store EVERY damn level to update every one just so I don't get WEAKER by leveling up rather than stronger. I don't like having to leave mid mission to sell just so I have money to buy more enhancements with. I don't like the fact that I can supposidly fight enemies that drop my origin.. yet I never get them. I hate getting nothing but useless as hell TOs when I am already well past DOs. I hate that I have to ignore half of the descriptions for the enhancements because they don't make any damn sense for my character. I hate having to look through a long confusing list of complicated names to find what I need..

Eh.. ignore me. I just don't like enhancers even since I played a controller that went completely enhancerless till level 22 pre containment to see how much money I could save up for SOs.. ugh.. don't reccomend that.

Whoa. And here I was thinking that this particular reincarnation of the Skills/SSOOCS was an offshoot of the Salvage/Crafting system for bases.

Just goes to show how wrong I can be, I guess.

You know what, that's good enough for me -- for now. I guess I'll hang onto the Inventions idea like I held onto Skills. Here's hoping I don't get duped on the same basic concept twice.

Castle, I'd still like to see something that would allow content determined by skills. Invention still makes me a thug, I invent and use them for my contact's bidding. I want to find something, use my own ability to track down something, and be rewarded for it. I posted about this in the Suggestions section. I don't think it would be that much harder to initiate, and could be a means of adding in options for people that have run all the missions dozens of times, and are looking for new content, without having the content revolving around a zone or level range.

I would strongly support not spending any more time on this. I feel that over the last year this game has shifted to making a common mistake among successful games: trying to be all things for all people. I think the core game that so many fans appreciate most has suffered as a result of this. When I think of what this game could look like and how many fewer bugs might exist if all of the staff time that was put into the arenas and skill system were instead put into PvE...

broaden your imagination if you're so much about concept.

As a natural arigin character I could invent gadgets or new training techniques that give me abilities I did not have before.

As a magic origin I might invent an artifact that triples my endurance for a short time, or a potion that can turn me invisible.

As a mutant, I'm certain there could be great advances with inventions that tap into my genetic code or further mutate myself.

Of course Science and Tech are the easiset ones to think of when you hear "Inventions" but I think it could easily be adapted to all the origins.

good point, guess it will depend then on the implementation. If its an external device like the Tricorder in the Med pool, big stretch. If it isn't, good to go.
