Anyone remember the skill system? Cryptic? Do You?

Is this coming with I7, or later?

It's a fair question, given that Positron mentions the Invention system in the course of an interview, the main subject of which is I7.

Yes, it has been considered. It's one of the main problems, in fact.

I am still holding out hope the invention system goes beyond combat oriented gameplay
For example, 'inventing' base defense/power/control items is cool, but I would also like to see the ability to invent other purely decorative items. Or elevators (Which could lead to decorative only base floors, locked down during raids so as not to unbalance base raids)
Or, assuming we can invent temp powers, such as a jet pack (and if not, I really must be misunderstanding the invention system) I would like to also see the ability to 'invent' badges that would unlock certain costume options, or even a new costume slot.
Also, taking temp powers in a new direction would also be good from an inventing standpoint. Inventing a temp power that would help you track mission objectives, or inventing a portable recall and rez beacon that would rez you at 1/4 health just inside the mission door... Things like that which are at least a little bit outside the current click and shoot design.
And while we are at it, are we getting apartments in I7? How about that extra digit for influence transfer? Character server transfer? Pie?

Eh. Sorry, I don't mean to be rude about it, I'm just a bit jaded about this sort of things. I've seen rampant speculation turned into rumor turned into "the devs said..." WAAAAAY too many times.
Honestly, though, I think I7 would be an unrealistic expectation, since they've mentioned nothing of this in the past, and there've been no hints of it in the runup to I7 which, while villian heavy, is pretty loaded with content already.
I'd be pretty suprised if we saw "inventions" that quickly. Unless "inventions" is their way of referring to the whole temp-power/enhancement creation thing that's supposed to be added into bases.

As long as we are able to "invent" a device that will help us track down that last stupid hiding mob in a Defeat All, like people with detective skills were supposed to be able to do in an example given in a dev interview about the skill system way back when, I will not feel too ripped off.

Oooooo. I like this idea. It would save many a frustrated nights.
Or even better lets cut down the Defeat All mishes(especially the ones that do NOT say they are defeat all) from 90% of the missions to more like 30%(yes, these are arbitrary numbers. It just what it feels like sometimes).
yeah this is what boogles my mind about skills, there are a ton of little QoL items that skills seem like the ideal way to cover the areas. Of course this example is pseudo combat oriented, but regardless of the skill I cant see one being added to CoX that doesnt in some way eventally affect combat.
I'm going to agree with you. so far I've seen CoH focus mainly on adding new combat gameplay. New zones to fight in, new enemies to fight, new powers and ATs to fight with, etc. Cryptic never seemed like a company that would put a feature into the game that didn't in some way affect how combat is played. Inventions or skills or whatever you want to call them must eventually have some kind of purpose in combat. I don't want to list any of the millions of possibilties for inventions, since the Red Names have posted precious few bits of info about the out of combat aspect of the system. But I would make the safe assumption that the system would have something to do with either bases or costumes. So far the only thing that the devs spend time on outside of pure combat or combat zones is costumes. They keep us content with tons of new baubles and doodads to throw on our tights. Bases are something that affects combat directly, simply because you can fight inside them. I would hazard a guess that inventions would affect the performance of the base and its defenses, or give attacking heroes some ability to bypass defenses.
But again, all my guesses are pure speculation and just me dumping out some thoughts, no point carrying around ideas in your knoggin' when there's an infinity of text to put them in
