Had my first taste of PvP tonight
Glad yall got to try it, because I didn't. Tried the event after I got home from work. Spent about 2+ hours just trying to get out of Breakout and get to the trainer and leveled up. Kept getting stuck in the mission entrance (and I can only hope retail isn't this bad about crashing on mission entry), and when FINALLY I got out of breakout (cryptic should really include a skip option for that area, considering that the pvp was taking place) I couldn't train up because Ghostwidow was constantly surrounded by a bunch of jerks who also kept spamming their powers and killing frame rates. And finally, finally when I do talk to her and then to the trainer (should have had more than one person for each at the entrance to the zone) I once again have to go through the pain of trying to get through the crowd of power spammers to get to the enhancement seller. About that time, an admin comes on and says 'thanks, we're done' and the server goes down.
First off, really sorry for the hassle all the villains had. They really should have made Breakout optional for the event.
That said, I LOVED this event.
I rolled up Snapperlight, a Sonic/Energy Blaster for it. Had tons of fun flying around. Yes, lag was bad, but really... it was going up to Siren's Call 20. It's to be expected.
Did a lot of air jousting with villains. Particularly Abby, a pretty mean ??/Rad Corruptor. I almost had her at first, but she had reinforcements that nailed my heroic butt to the ground.
After that, I hooked up with a team that was defending the gates... literally. The villains in my shard were camped out less than 100 yards from the hospital.
Got surprised by a few Stalkers, but far less than I would've guessed. One even failed to one-shot me with Assassin's Blow (? The MA Assassination).
Anyway, long story short, I managed to kill Abby a bit before closing time. All was well with the world.

Over the hills and through the woods.
I think arena's were not successful because you have to go and wait for PVP - in the zones, not only do you not have to get someone to play with you specifically, but there is other stuff to do there while you are there.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
For me it wasnt the waiting with arenas (I didnt have a problem with that on the first few days), it was the way it was implemented. I mainly play defenders or controllers. Most of them are designed for team play, not surprisingly they didnt do well 1-1, but the fact that toggles were dropping cos you got hit was just stupid. Rad debuffs up, hit, debuffs down, hit hard and dead. Artic air, steamy mist, hit - they drop and I die. None of these toons had big damage output and relied on toggles to debuff the enemy but anyone with damage output can totally negate the toggles by simply using their attacks.
In team situation they didnt do much better, cant help team if I cant keep toggle up, and the fact that when playing in teams you tend to just die the moment you get targetted by everyone on the other team doesnt help. Defenders/trollers seem to be first target as well.
Although im not really into PvP I was actually looking forward to Arenas, and tried all 8 toons over the course of a couple of evenings. The only one that did anything was a kinetic defender in 1-1, I found he could out tank a tank with end drain and transfusion. My conclusion - defenders and trollers are at disadvantage and if they are toggle based then they are at a bigger disadvantage. No idea whether it changed cos Ive never been back since, Im not going to design a toon just for PvP.

I hated it, no fun for me, as I suspected. Possibly if it wasn't a slide show it might have been ok. Was real apprehensive going in. Ganked over and over by unseen enemies, hospital trips, and running back to the hotspot, but suddenly held..dead in seconds, almnost always I never had a chance to fight back. Since the toons are being wiped anyway, it wasn't so bad, But I am more anti-PvP than ever.
I really hope it can be avoided altogether after CoV launches, while still allowing me to have my PvE experience.

But you are using a really bad example to make your determination with. There were upwards of 6 thousand ppl so of course there was gonna be lag. What did you expect , that it was gonna be empty? The beta servers had lag regardless now throw thousands of people into one zone somethings gonna happen.
I would wait until it drops live before you make any final decisions but for some people pvp isnt their thing. Maybe its not yours and thats cool I would just use a better example before I jump ship.

You know, i don't like jack just as the next guy doesn't But please, make reference to where he said "no pvp". As far as I can remember (open beta) CoV has always been scheduled for release. I believe it was suppose to be around july initially but it has obviously been pushed back to oct. The point is, CoV has always meant PvP. So why on earth would jack or any dev for that matter say "no pvp" when CoV (Hero fighting Villain, ) was always on the drawing table?? I mean, if we wanna play this "game", jack also promised me statues among statues of PositronBot and also promised he would come over and wash my car every weekend. I have yet to see him ONCE!!! Gosh, what BS, i think i'm going to cancel my account.
At this point from what I can tell you are in fact forced into PvP if you want to get everything out of the game.
There are badges in PvP zones, exploration, etc that have nothing to do with actually PvPing but you must endanger yourself to get them nonetheless.
This isn't counting possible history or mission badges I have yet to come across that may be in PvP zones.
And I bet atleast one of these badges is linked to an accolade or two...
So, yes, PvP or atleast endangering yourself by entering a PvP zone, is mandatory.
Surprise! Badges and Accolades aren't mandatory.

That's BS, accolades have little impact on the game or your character. They are the highest badges of honor, trophies to celebrate your accomplishments.
BTW, PvP was a discussion point all the way back in the CoH beta, I guess some people have selective memories....

Or it's completely different. It is mandatory to train and buy in order to lvl through this game, which I believe is the point of the game. To become the most powerful superhero you can be. It is NOT mandatory to have some extra exploration badges, badges showing that you killed a certain number of bad guys, or any of the helpful (but not necessary) accolades.

My logic and your logic seem to be on different planes.
1. Didn't know enchantments were in City of Heroes/Villains. Always figured that was more of a fantasy thing.
2. Enhancements aren't necessary, but a lack of them certainly hinders you in a significant way.
3. Training is mandatory as you can't advance in the game without doing so.
4. You're right. Doing missions isn't mandatory. Never said it was.
5. Badges and Accolades are NOT, by any means, necessary.
Show me a character that was broken (unable to do anything or level) by a lack of badges or accolades and I'll take back my statement.

Exactly. Why this fear over pvp? This isn't a game where they can "gank" you in Atlas Park. Hell they can't even visit Atlas Park unless they roll a hero.
I'm not an arena fan, but the new pvp zones are fun so far.

the masses' desire to kill one another
[/ QUOTE ] I've grumbled many times that if there was that much desire for PvP in COH, the arenas would not be constantly deserted about 24 hours a day. In fact about the only thing arenas serve as right now is a place to buy inspirations during a task force.
I've pre-ordered COV and I want it to succeed, but my biggest fear is that PvP zones will be as deserted as COH's arenas and that base raids will not draw the crowds that they hope it will.
Most of the bored 50s I know (in and out of my SG) want:
-50+ content
-New zones
-More interesting missions
-New archetypes and powers, perhaps the non-combat skills
They couldn't care less about pvp and probably won't be interested in any of that aspect that COV is bringing to the game.
In fact I'm not looking forward to the amount of arm twisting I'm gonna have to do to get certain members of my SG interested in base raids. I'll try but it will be a pain.
[/ QUOTE ]
I hate the Arena, but I love mission and objective-based PvP. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Witness WoW, where the Arena was pretty much deserted on my (RP) server, but the PvP battlegrounds are a smashing success. Heck, there was even PvP in the regular zones on my server before the BGs came about.
I think most people don't want to fight just for the sake of fighting. They like to have some reason to do so, and that's what these PvP zones provide, with an over-arching conflict and goal to resolve.
I didn't get to play in the event because I went to see DOOOOOOOM.
Could anybody tell me if the battle was swinging one way or another?

Generally speaking, the villains got trounced. I was in a few different iterations of the zone, and the heroes were almost always further along on the tug of war bar.

They've never said no PvP, or at least, not since well before launch. I remember Cryptic talking about wanting an arena when I was in beta, but it was something they didn't have time to finish implementing. If they did ever say "no PvP," it was far longer ago than a year ago.

[/ QUOTE ]
Well I didn't realize I said Badges were necessary...I did say PvP was necessary to get everything out of the game. There are stories and badges in the PvP zones that cannot be seen or aquired anywhere else.
And also I'd say +15% HP and +10% End is darn near required...thats what I have right now from two accolades in CoH and I imagine it'll be similar in CoV.
If people didn't feel those accolades and having that boost to HP and END were needed then they wouldn't bother getting them. I've seen people with barely any badges save those required for the HP/END accolades.
I imagine 15% more HP is alot. Especially to a tank or Scrapper. That can mean a few more punches they can take. And anything that improves your HP and/or END I believe is required...especially post ED.
I assume none of you "Badges/Accolades aren't necessary" guys actually have those HP/END accolades. I mean after all no point in wasting time getting them if they aren't necessary.
If none of the PvP zone badges are related to accolades of any quality worthy of use (ie HP/END perma-buff) then fine let them be there. But as it is...if you want all the badges/accolades in CoV then you are forced into PvP.

I loved it! I was Frost Hermit, an Ice/Storm Controller. I wasn't killing anyone, but boy did villains hate it when I was around!
I would lay down an ice patch, throw out freezing rain, and then herd them up with hurricane. I feel so evil, but it's for the forces of good!

That sounds exactly like my evening. I wanted to be a villain but everytime I tried to load a zone in breakout, the game would crash. I gave up and made an Ice/Storm controller. I didn't kill anyone, but I had a lot of fun. Hurricane, Gale, Ice Patch... it was a lot of fun. I did feel evil by holding people though, so I stopped that. I only died once because of mapserver, but I'll be back in Siren's Call again.

I tried 2 different Villainesses for this thing, and a big issue with that was the villains I saw were not cooperating as well as the heroes. Heroes seemed to be far more cohesive and coordinated and villains were more chaotic and disorganized. Almost like the movies/books in a way.
I was an EM/EA brute... I started attacking a Longbow Warden.... This was in a hotspot... then all of a sudden about 12 hero's appeared took out all my backup... and started shooting at me. I SURVIVED.....
The first barrage... Then I got splattered like a kitty being hit by a train. a real train not a model one.

Gale was a highlight of my evening. Pesky MM's pets bothering you? Gale! They're not anymore! Oh man, I must've been seriously annoying the other side. Putting random villains on follow with Hurricane and Artic Air is another source of joy.

Good for you ;-)
I liked it but my experience was totally ruined by the severe lag. I am a Stalker in CoV and getting up close and personnal was practically impossible due to the incredible lag.
I hope that what we saw was due to the large amount of users and to "beta" on the servers. If PvP in CoV is going to be like that, then it will not see me very often.
Oh, by the way, my system is a P4-2GHz w/1GB, Windows XP SP2, nVIDIA GEFORCE 6200 OC w/256MB & current drivers, and an HSI cable modem connection. I played the PvP with almost everything turned off. I know that my system is not a barn stormer, but it should be OK.
