Had my first taste of PvP tonight

And, while Jack says now that PvP will always be optional, a little over a year ago he was saying no PvP.

[/ QUOTE ]

They've never said no PvP, or at least, not since well before launch. I remember Cryptic talking about wanting an arena when I was in beta, but it was something they didn't have time to finish implementing. If they did ever say "no PvP," it was far longer ago than a year ago.

Just remembering the discussions at the Cryptic/NCsoft booth at GenCon '04. Something got misrepresented. One way or another.

I had tons of fun playing my dark/dark cor. Storms (namely a storm def and a storm controller) gave me the most trouble. We had to swarm them to beat them. My first time in pvp and I had no idea about hot spots or ir goggles. I didn't even know that orange names denoted enemies so I was dumbfounded to see a hero (he was a version of a famous CoH hero) with an orange name running at me soon after I arrived in Siren's Call. If it hadn't been for an arbiter drone this noob would have been dead.

I wish I would have had time to play a blaster because some peeps kept seeking refuge on roofs. As it was I was able to help a fellow villain take down a hero on a roof. Still, with a blaster's snipe I could have littered the roofs of SC w/ dead villains.

Hope they do this again. And I for one am happy that I pre-ordered CoV, ED notwithstanding.

I think one of my funniest moments tonight, er last night. Was charging a Storm/* Defender. They were hitting me with everything they could, as I lumbered with Rooted on, right through it all. Got to them in the center of the storm, proceeded to SMASH them. Then someone laid down ice slick.....Needless to say I slowed to a creeping halt.

Could someone please tell me what happens when the bar is full in Siren's Call? I was at 2200 points and the bar was nearly complete when I disco'd. When I relogged, it was reset to 0 and the bar was back at its starting point of halfway.

Also, is that a bug with disconnections concerning the points? It took me a good amount of time to get it to 2200. I was extremely frustrated upon relogging in to see it reset.

And yes I /bugged it.

And also, what is AS? I've seen it in other thread when talking about PvP. From what I read, its bad to get ASed.

From context, Assassin's Strike, a Stalker power. It basically does something like 7x to 10x normal damage, assuming the Stalker is hidden. It's meant to one-shot (or close enough) just about anything.

It's assassin's strike (specifically being one-shotted by it).

Don't know anything about the bar (first time pvper) but AS is assassination strike. W/it stalkers can one shot most AT's. Though they didn't seem to be much of a factor in last night's event.
FWIW according to the cov boards alot of stalkers weren't able to one shot squishes in last night's event.

Have to argue with that, but I'm far from the "uber" stalker. White and some yellow con MOBs, yes. (Ignoring build up and such, being a pre-order invite, my highest stalker is lvl 10.)

Hitting yellows, reds, etc. I think the best I got on *anyone* was about 2/3 HP down. Given the crowds tonight, if there wasn't another villain around to help out, I had to leave THEN or get killed.

On my 10, just so you can see the difference Assassination (the Stalker inherent) makes - out in the open, AS is ... er, useless. 3 seconds of build up (and funky animation) for about 12-15 damage. Hidden, about 110 points.

Want to not get ASd? Keep moving... or play a friggin Stormie. Geez... talk about not being able to get close... had an easier time going toe-to-toe with Scrappers.

Great fun though.

Was a great time really. Stalkers werent the huge problem everyone was saying. All in all things seemed pretty even and fair really. Heroes banded together and used their strength (defense) Villains were pretty unorganized but it was a hootin time.

The lag was the worst. Even being a squishy corruptor like I was, I didnt really die that much. End seemed to be a real issue for me though. I was Ice/Kin (no transference at that time) so ice is end heavy I knew that.

I am really looking forward to live now after that event. Let's hope people dont go whine crazy. Sure I got killed but brushed off my tights and got back into it. It's all in good fun. If its no fun for you, dont, well.... just dont reply heh.

I have to agree with the OP. I hated PvP in other MMOs and this lag infested hell was no better. I wanted to take a look-see and wonder if CoH/CoV could do better than WoW or EQ's PvP, and it wasn't. Less lag would have helped but it still was dull and irritating.

Lag has to be expected when you have three times as many people as any other server on (there were over 6000 people logged in) and nearly everyone of them is in Siren's Call. I doubt lag will be anywhere near as bad as this when people can play on their home servers.

Of course. Although I was amazed we had even 1/10 as many as we did. I was in SC 15 on my MM at one point.

Well I had a TON of problems at first. . . the Breakout was just too funny. I think the villains out numbered the cons 3 to 1. I have never seen so many orange jumpsuits prone on the ground! ! ! The mission where you have to rescue Jenkins and plant the bomb, kept loading me into the sky with the clouds. After 3 attempts I decided to play COH and ran a few missions in Kings Row with my tank.

At 10pm I tried again and had success with the PvP. Buying enhancements was a pain, wish they could have spread out the stores a bit just so everyone was not in the same area.

Once I got into the battlezone I could not do <bleep>. So my villain thought like a Hero, if I can not take anyone down I will just make it hard for them to take anyone else. I kept firing off buffs and heals as soon as they recharged. I had a great time, inspite of the login and lag difficulties. I loved the whole sense of a war zone feel of running from hot spot to hot spot seeing a group of Longbows come at you.

I am not a huge PVP person, but if they were to have more "events" like this it might be fun. What got me about this was the fact that well who cares about the debt, because at the end your character get wiped anyway.

Well, The Pie Man had a fun time.

The event was excellent. Most fun I've had in CoH/CoV well since CoH came out...

Yeah, not exactly sure if this was the right word for it. Laggy and irritating I can understand, but dull? There was a LOT of nonstop action going on throughout the entire zone.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun. Couldnt see myself not having fun at a pvp event though.

Yes I felt it was very dull. I have had more fun sitting down than at the event.

It was everything I expected. Laggy...check. To take down others in a zone...check. To be taken out by other people in the zone...check. To try and take control points...check. Lag aside I had fun. I'll assume it's because I had realistic expectations. I didn't expect the zone to do my dishes or anything. Only kicking the crap out of people, get beat up myself and try taking neighborhoods over. The lag will fix itself when there are less people on the servers and in the zone.

I'm not sure what else some of you look for in PvP. Lag aside it's fun, fast-paced and has objectives to make you a winner or loser. I also discovered that I really liked playing a corruptor. I've been playing a dominator in beta and haven't really tried anything else out.

you realize in a triple negative, you're saying that you said there would never be any PvP. right jack?
I count the 4th never as a confirmation of statement.
but I'm nitpicking because I'm bored.

Smile when you call me that Jack

Jack may never have said it directly. But I do remember years ago, when "the devs" had no plans to implement PvP (we are talking 2001 here). Back then the game had a very different outlook, and didn't even have a publisher. I respect the fact that a lot changes in the development process. Especially caving into the masses' desire to kill one another

I really don't think you can hold anyone, especially in the electronic gaming industry, to plans they made over 4 years ago. I'd have to have someone throw plans I made last MONTH back in my face.

the masses' desire to kill one another

[/ QUOTE ] I've grumbled many times that if there was that much desire for PvP in COH, the arenas would not be constantly deserted about 24 hours a day. In fact about the only thing arenas serve as right now is a place to buy inspirations during a task force.

I've pre-ordered COV and I want it to succeed, but my biggest fear is that PvP zones will be as deserted as COH's arenas and that base raids will not draw the crowds that they hope it will.

Most of the bored 50s I know (in and out of my SG) want:
-50+ content
-New zones
-More interesting missions
-New archetypes and powers, perhaps the non-combat skills

They couldn't care less about pvp and probably won't be interested in any of that aspect that COV is bringing to the game.

In fact I'm not looking forward to the amount of arm twisting I'm gonna have to do to get certain members of my SG interested in base raids. I'll try but it will be a pain.

I truly dislike the Arena - Defenders just aren't fun to play there, and I love playing Defenders.

Last night, on the other hand, was fun - I redid my rad/rad defender, managed to get our team of three into the same instance of Siren's Call, and had fun. Laggy as all get-out, of course, but between the chaos and the PvE mobs, I actually lived long enough to be a Defender.

If the battles when it goes live are like that - where you can live long enough to actaully use some of your powers, then I think it'll make a fun addition to the game - something I strongly doubted would be the case.

Of course, being stubborn, I'm still not entirely convinced that it'll be that way on live - but at least now it seems that it can be fun. Which I didn't think was so before.

So, kudos to the development team - it seems like all their hard work has not been wasted...
