Had my first taste of PvP tonight
They've always said that PvP will optional. Some CoV contacts (and maybe CoH contacts??) will send you to a PvP zone to talk to someone there (that is in the safe zone so you can't be attacked.) You can do PvE missions for these PvP zone contacts but you don't have to (kind of like having to go to the Hollows at lvl 5 but not having to run a mission there if you don't want to.) So you can go in, get out and not have to step foot in the zone again if you don't want to.
Aye, it's optional.
Though...if a villain does the first mission in Siren's Call (1-hour timed, plant 2 bombs in Longbow base), you earn a Gladiator for your efforts. Not sure about the hero's side of things.
My first "turning point" in this city was during the Rularuu Invasion, and charging in with my BS/Regen Scrapper. Skyway City, at Level 10. It went...poorly.
I Couldn't even move in the server tonight it was so laggy. Rubber band lag? Try cement shoes for your villian.. it was painful.. and sad because I really wanted to see some of my characters later abilities.
I've got to say UGH....at least for the stalkers role in everything. I couldn't get anywhere NEAR a Defender....or most tanks...or scrappers....or...well...just about any hero worth knowing. I managed to gank a few....but that was while they were distracted and away from the Stormies and Bubblers....and may I say I have never seen so many bubblers and stormies before!!
Had my first taste of it too, and hated it. The lag was insane, even with my graphics turned way down, and I have a pretty good set-up. What really bothered me was the bouncing around. Combine that with the noise (headphones) and the flashing colors from powers, and I actually started to feel sick. I'm not prone to seizures, but seriously, if the sonics had to be toned down because it was bothering people, this may send many over the edge. Fortunately, it is optional. An option I don't intend to use often.
Played a dominator and I kept pinning heroes against the wall with Telekinesis while Stalkers 1-2 shotted my targets, easy pickings. I even managed to confuse a scrapper. I had fun because we won .. but the lag was just miserable .. I hope Lag won't be a problem on launch

I loved it! I was Frost Hermit, an Ice/Storm Controller. I wasn't killing anyone, but boy did villains hate it when I was around!
I would lay down an ice patch, throw out freezing rain, and then herd them up with hurricane. I feel so evil, but it's for the forces of good!
Gale was a highlight of my evening. Pesky MM's pets bothering you? Gale! They're not anymore! Oh man, I must've been seriously annoying the other side. Putting random villains on follow with Hurricane and Artic Air is another source of joy.
I wish we could do it again.
I'll have to disagree.
Yes the lag was bad, but it was so fun I barely noticed or cared. This is the type of content that I have been waiting for! (I'm a very casual gamer, not a hardcore PVPer)
please dont make it seem bad for those that didnt see it. lag is a given seeing as how it was condensed to 1 server for the whole world.
it was fun to team with NPCs and kill vllains (in my case).
my 1st death was to 2 stalkers who jumped me while i was killing PVE bad guys.
i was skeptical before but this event did it for me i'm buying the game/expansion.
i had fun
Hehe, I had some fun, despite sume ubar ganking. My Corruptor (Ice/Thermal) was kicking some serious [censored]. Took TP Foe, found the squishies, get them, hold them, tear 'em down. Every once and a while I'd find some tank who didn't like my looks and own me in the face, oh well, you win some you lose some.
As for Brutes, I tried a Stone/EA and a Dark/Invuln. The Stone/EA was SMASHing really well, all while battling the great Endurance battle. Wasn't too bad with Stamina and some enhancers in there. The DM/Invuln however, wasn't doing so hot for me. I have very limited time with both these playsets, so my slotting and power choices could be way off, but the damage was lacking compared to stone, and I couldn't build up my Fury as fast as I would have liked to.
I was playing a Illusion/Storm Controller. Stalkers were insanely easy to spot and kill. Half the time I just stood there and laughed as I saw them run up behind me and get tossed away by my Hurricane. I loaded it up with -Acc buffs and had 5 Brutes surrounding me a couple times, attacking. I was running the first couple times it happened, then after a while, as none of them could hit me, I just ignored them until they got bored and ran away.
The lag was so bad though, that I couldn't summon my Decoys. also, I didn't realize Group Invis was teammate only, and finding a team that stayed and fought together without running in all different directions, was impossible. So sadly, I went with a team friendly build, but ended up solo most the time.
I've pretty much been anti-pvp for awhile (thank you Arena), but... that wasn't half bad.
I loved it, stalkers jakked my [censored] up tho, pikkin on an emp defender, villains have no shame!

I hated it, no fun for me, as I suspected. Possibly if it wasn't a slide show it might have been ok. Was real apprehensive going in. Ganked over and over by unseen enemies, hospital trips, and running back to the hotspot, but suddenly held..dead in seconds, almnost always I never had a chance to fight back. Since the toons are being wiped anyway, it wasn't so bad, But I am more anti-PvP than ever.
I really hope it can be avoided altogether after CoV launches, while still allowing me to have my PvE experience.

pvp can easily be avoided. I'm sorry you didn't like it. Were you doing all that solo? I was teamed and my team stayed together, concentrated on the same targets and used buffs to see threats. We kicked a lot of butt and had a lot of fun.
we picked a defender up later in the night who had similar complaints to yours. I told him to stick by my tank's aura and I'd protect him from stalkers. And I did. If he stayed within about 90 feet, he never had a problem with a stalker.
i was VERY wary about this and came away with a great feeling. My pickup team was great and lots of fun.

Never thought I would be a fan of PvP either, but I must admit (lag aside) that was a blast. When you were in the air looking down on the event it was truly awesome. It realy had a warzone feel. And, since getting unknowingly ganked is part of war sometimes, I could excuse that.
Dear god, who the heck was Sentinel (possibly SENTINEL)!? Toward the end no one could touch that damn troller.
But yeah, aside from the false start, that was a blast. ..Though I have to say I had more fun with my blaster than my stalker. I was Teh Sexay Cat (blaster) and Dr Grin (stalker).
Oh, and regarding the person who said stalkers're easy to see.. of course they are, they still have those blasted names above their heads.
I wasn't sure I was going to like PvP in CoV - I come from playing WoW where PvP=get killed repeatedly by higher-level uber-guild powergamers, even in their 'balanced' Battlegrounds.
But I had fun on tonight's PvP beta test in spite of the lag. It was really neat battling alongside NPCs against other players and hostile NPCs.
If you were getting ganked alot there was one rule that I learned quickly:
ALONE IS BAD - Find other heroes ASAP and stick with them. Even if it's just one other stranger, you DON'T want to wander the Call alone.
I just ran around until I found a big fight then stuck with the mob as best as I could. Got into a group at one point which really made it fun.
I would deem this event as "Epic battles (with lag)"
As someone who has done Hami Raids, I knew that the lag would be bad. Had a few "Death by Lag". Those aren't fun.

LOL yeah same here. Had less deaths on my hero then my villian though.

Agree with a lot here. I'm more anti-PvP now than before. Single worst experience I've had in the game. In another thread I said I've had more fun at a Dentist's office, and I'm not a Dentist.
I had so little fun, I wonder if I'm going to continue playing. I really love this genre, and right now the genre alone is why I'm staying.

are you getting CoV? it's really, really easy to avoid the pvp if you want.

I'm testing in Beta. If you want to call it that. The game goes live in 6 days, and really isn't ready. Lots of bugs. While I can avoid the PvP, it's really obvious that PvP is the direction the game is going. And, while Jack says now that PvP will always be optional, a little over a year ago he was saying no PvP. I'd much rather see better mob AI, more content, a lot more quality of life type of additions (colorization of powersets, ability to turn off special effects, etc...) than the relentless pursuit of something I had no interest in before tonight, and less after.

I had tons of fun playing my dark/dark cor. Storms (namely a storm def and a storm controller) gave me the most trouble. We had to swarm them to beat them. My first time in pvp and I had no idea about hot spots or ir goggles. I didn't even know that orange names denoted enemies so I was dumbfounded to see a hero (he was a version of a famous CoH hero) with an orange name running at me soon after I arrived in Siren's Call. If it hadn't been for an arbiter drone this noob would have been dead.
I wish I would have had time to play a blaster because some peeps kept seeking refuge on roofs. As it was I was able to help a fellow villain take down a hero on a roof. Still, with a blaster's snipe I could have littered the roofs of SC w/ dead villains.
Hope they do this again. And I for one am happy that I pre-ordered CoV, ED notwithstanding.
