Because sadly on Liberty, it is not.

Quote:Troy, you don't give yourself enough credit. Maybe it's just from reading the Comcis section more, back in the day, but seeing you posting in the Heroes thread and such was pretty wow and awesome. I dunno, but it was pretty damn awesome.. like oh hey, there's this CoH celebrity posting in these threads. That's badass.I don't think many folks will miss me. Those new laser-sights are fantastic...
I'm sure I'm re-using the same phrases over and over and it has to grate on a writer so I apologize. I know you had a part in things with CoH, even if just the comic side, etc, but I'd love to hear any tales from how things were, etc, from you and David Nakayama (whatever happened to him, anyways?).
But hey, maybe it's just me, but I think Troy Hickman is pretty awesome. -
And why isn't this thread stickied?!?!
-
In no particular order..
- My game/computer mapserving trying to put an HO in the Auction House. Never did figure out why.
- The bizarreness that is missing from less than a foot away from a target. Especially with eyebeams. There's nothing like seeing them shoot out the side of your head just to miss.
- Your range vs target range.
- The new AP and all of Praetoria. I enjoy being able to move faster than Walk through a zone.
- Multiple Caltrops. ESPECIALLY after the targets are dead. ..Although Knives of Artemis' is pretty so those aren't so bad.
- Troy Hickman. Naw, just kidding. I just wanted to see if I could get him to show up. "Sanctuary" is still one of my favorite short stories, in comic or otherwise form.
- Not being able to post in the Comics section because I'm not VIP. I never did understand that.
- Being stuck being the guy on the team of friends who plays the role needed for the TF or mission, etc, because everyone else wants to play specific toons and being the only one to budge.
- Having to turn off Hide/Mask Presence to escort a hostage because they can't see you if you move more than 3 feet at a time.
- Facing Sappers on anyone other than my Dark Armor scrap.
- Facing the rogue Vanguard on my Dark Armor scrap. -

We never did get to keep the best Community Reps. Even those now, are merely borrowed. That being said, when it comes down to it, our Community Reps at the end of the day are a bunch of text arranged on a computer screen. Sure, some of the forum goers have the privilege of meeting them in person, but for a bunch of text arranged on a computer screen.. they've made quite an impact on more than a few lives.
/em salute
P.S. Who does that us leave for Community Reps? Or have things finally GONE TO THE AMERICANS!? -
Go check and make sure Bobby Ewing isn't in the shower.

Quote:Yeah, it basically just involves an animation on a "path" (Z-axis?) that's a certain number of ingame feet above the current level for swimming, right? Because every so often when the swimming animation doesn't play, you run at the same level you swim. It'd just be tricky because you'd have to have the game tell when it's entering the water. That's actually (theoretically) doable with existing tech. It involves swapping in a different animation for the in water state. The only caveat is that it has to be tied to a toggle power.
I was going to ask if the game could tell when you were in water, but then I remembered this was a discussion about Water Armor and new tech. Soo.. Water Armor gets stronger when you're in water? AKA environmental changes boosting your powers? -
Quote:Sooo.. running on top of water.. size changing.. no redraw when using a non-weapon power..?I don't think Water Melee was on the drawing board, but Synapse/Phil could confirm that.
I do know that there was a new game mechanic that Andy Maurer put into the game that would have allowed the introduction of an oft-requested ability, and Water Armor would have used it. -

Saw this on my daily webcomic reading today at PvP:
Quote:I was sad to hear that NCSoft was shutting down City of Heroes
The Super-hero themed MMO has close ties to PvP. Back in 2004, after getting hooked on the game myself, I did a series of strips about COH that were so well received that NCSoft approached me to collect them into a comic book. The comic was included in the collectors edition DVD box set. That year, NCSoft provided us with copies of the game to give out with a purchase of $50 or more at the PvP booth at the San Diego Comicon. Needless to say that was our best sales year to date. And more recently, Paragon Studios asked us to create a custom mission featuring our own super-hero the LOLbat.
Being a big comic book fan, I was ecstatic when City of Heroes was released and we played it non-stop from launch. My first hero was an ice blasted named Zamboni. Later I created the swashbuckling En Garde and started up a super-group. I absolutely LOVED creating my own heroes, combining powers and costumes with funny names. Pummel Granite, Catfight, Smartalec, Moonchild, Landshark and Eskimo Spy. We had a complete blast.
I have not played City of Heroes in quite a while, but the game still has a very strong and passionate player base. I wasnt sure at first how or if I could help. Stories are coming in that NCSoft is in talks with investors and possibly trying to find a way to make something happen. Im not sure of the details. but everyone agrees that talking about it and keeping the game in the spotlight can only help the cause. So here are some links to learn more (courtesy of John C. Wrights blog):
The announcement from NCSoft
The online petition asking NCSoft not to shut down the game
City of Heroes is intertwined in the history of our comic strip. So many of our readers discovered PvP because of the game. I dont want it to die. I dont know what I can do to stop it from going away other than talking about it. Please join me in that.
Spread the word. -
Quote:Pfft, that's nothing. For the first month of playing I didn't know you could combine enhancements at all!
Or remove them in any way!
Psh.. I can top that. The first time I played and I had to take the Tram, I didn't know that you had to click it. ..So I basically spent 15 minutes standing in front of it, trying to time it right that I could run into the open doors and getting pissed off that I couldn't figure it out. -
Ok, my ultimate Confession?
<.<

...I took Flurry and Whirlwind on my first toon. -
Quote:Wait wait, CoH made them 1/3 of their losses from 1-2 games and our game's the one getting shut down? Le sigh. Though, the article doesn't say if that's yearly or for Q2.Blade and Soul and GW2 caused them to lose 6 million.. during that time...
"Other games such as "City of Heroes," also known as "Villain," posted 2.9 billion won...
or about 2575030.65 dollars US.
http://view.koreaherald.com/kh/view....08001105&cpv=0
Not gonna play a game that helped kill our game... which seemed really profitable by their numbers...
Just... damn....
...And "Also known as Villain" sounds like an awesome toon name, if 1 character too long. -
Well, I did finally get a FPARN today. Does that count?
-
Oh and I also regret not being able to even get one legit kill on someone epic on Liberty in PVP like someone from the Freaks or Whirligig.
-
Holy crap, how do you boil down time spent on CoH since Aug 2005 into a forum post, even if that entire time wasn't consecutive because even during time away you were still in contact/doing things with people met in CoH but elsewhere on the intrawebs?
Biggest regrets? Not being able to afford CoH for two accounts as well as life after getting married and that my computer sucks too much to handle the high end stuff so even if I was a subscriber again or even if they made the game VIP, I wouldn't be able to experience it.
Best moments? In game or CoH related?
- Getting married to my wife that I met ingame.
- Her saying yes when I proposed.
- Meeting my wife.
- Sitting by her ingame by the double waterfall island in Oro talking for hours during the initial talking phase.
- Watching a friend I made on CoH who despite not being ingame for awhile, get married to someone she met on CoH and just recently have a child together with her hubby met in CoH. You GO, Jenifer!
- Being SO EXCITED to ding my first 50 that instead of sitting at 49 and waiting for people to get on the next day, I stayed up and played through some random Praetorian Portal missions and dinged 50 on a random mob.
- Killing Romulus for the last time on an ITF with Soul Transfer on my dark/dark scrapper.
- Flying. Sweet Jesus, flying. If there's one thing I will miss more than anything in this game it's the Flight power.
-
Post a better video of her so people can get an um.. better idea of who she is.
-
...Part of the reason why I stopped playing as much before the sunset announcement was that between making a build in Mids and the idea of the character that I had in my mind, I never got the characters beyond the Character Creator.
Which leads me to this confession:
No offense to the people at Titan or the people that pushed for "real numbers", I think that that was one of the worst things added to the game because it popularized min/maxing even more.
And my other confession that ties into that.. I'm one of those people that was actually fine with ED, but that might have something to do with me starting soon before it started. -
...*eyetwitch*
If we multiply the 4.698631734685421662262508644835e+143 I got in the edit with the sliders by the 70 possible skintones and the 160 colors and 2 for the two colors, even though it isn't the right way to do the math, we get 1.052493508569534452346801936443e+148.
..And I'm done with this whole "math" thing. There're well over a googol of combinations and that's mind boggling. No. Mind bottling. -
So basically, what everyone is saying is that, based off the rough numbers listed in this thread.. costume combinationss x primary/secondary combinations x powerset combinations each character is 1 in 1,511,583,785,054,616,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000?
Barring of course, accurate Arcanaville math.
Edit: And of course it should be multiplied by 3 for the different genders(?) and if we assume 1-100 for the sliders, it'd be 4.698631734685421662262508644835e+143? Oh man I'm confused and I don't even know how to write this out, etc. I'm going to get some coffee!

My biggest problem, aside from CoH ruining me when it comes to community and character customization, is that I have an old computer that can play CoH fine on regular, non-Ultra settings but still gets laggy sometimes zoning on TFs.
I've tried CO and the art style is hard to get past, even without the black lines, and it just seems like it's hard to get into in general if you're there by yourself.
STO was fun at first, but then when you get past the tutorial it's like.. "ok now what?" and you're stuck staring into the abyss of the game by yourself.
Which's what made DCUO so nice is that you can just plug in and go if you don't mind how they handle the appearance of your characters (loot driven), because the game is basically a single player game online because you have to search for the chat windows, etc. But after awhile it gets lonely and it has a tendency to crash my ancient computer to desktop so it's like.. meh, I might as well be playing a Fallout. That's just as multiplayer as DCUO and it crashes less. -
See.. THIS THREAD is a perfect example of what makes this all so sad. I've never encountered an MMO where the staff and players were so close and part of a community as a whole like CoH, and that's sad because it's not like the devs and staff are doing anything extraordinary, they're just being good people. No matter how upset people are by this, they at least know in the back of their head that the staff left on the game will keep going for the players until the very end.
And.. *sniff* that's just too beautiful to lose and be thrown to the wolves of the rest of the MMO world. -
Also there're still items on the Beta market that aren't 0. Mainly costume bundles. Not to gripe about a gift, etc, especially given the "end times" and all, but I thought everyone was set up to be VIP on beta now?
