    Nicely done Chad, gratz!

    Ouch!

Whew, what a relief. I'm glad it's not just me then, I was starting to doubt my own scrapper credentials. I guess its good to be humbled every once in a while, toughens you up. I know I'm heading back for a new respec and plan to beef him back up again and get him in top fighting shape.

I wonder now how we earthlings had such a hard time in the Rikti war, Rikti are push-overs and our Vanguard first line of defense is fairly stout.
  3. Whisky_Jack

    Ouch!

So I was dusting off my old level 50 FM/WP scrapper last night because I had a new concept for one of his costume slots so I headed to the Rikti warzone (I'm after the vanguard pieces.) This level 50 was one of my easiest to level and also my first 50 and never ever ever had any issues of difficulty with him. Recently I respecced him pulling off some of his better IO's to pass on to new alts, but he was still adequately decked out. I had run some radio missions with him when the new difficulty slider came out and found his sweet spot of +1/X8 w/bosses & AV's.

So I get to the last mission I had ran in the RWZ arc previously and hit Gaussian for his first mission. Blah blah blah, rogue Vanguard, blah blah blah. I proceed to the door, walk in and prepare to burn the place to the ground...three seconds later I'm dead, I didn't even get off a complete attack string. So I think ok, difficulty slider might be set a bit high, drop current mission, make a b-line to the hero corps lady, set my difficulty slider down a few notches, then back to Gaussian for mission #2. Hit the door running, find a slightly smaller first group, get ready to pounce, and promptly die. Hmmm, maybe I forgot to toggle back up after the last hospital trip in my haste. Try it again, more careful this third time...dead.

After three tries I gave up frustrated for my first time in scrapperdom. These guys that tough? Am I missing something? I'm fairly sure it was the vanguard rangers who swarmed me, with the glowing claws, there might have been a lt. wizard or two in the group as well. This is my one scrapper who isn't defense minded, but a powerhouse in the offense department.
  4. Thanks Tonality, I've taken your suggestions and worked up a new build. I've gots some funds behind me despite this being my one and only redside toon. Fortunately, thanks to spin and all my regen and recovery tools I was able to start farming with him early in some custom AE missions and I've been able to make a couple hundred mil inf buying and selling the bronze tickets randoms. Sooooo...I've managed to get myself three sets of kinetic combats, some nice uniques that drop in the 10-14 bronze random rolls, but past that I tend to be a cheapskate and noob.

I took your suggestion on Focus, Strike, Spin and Eviserate, slotting them accordingly. I'm still alittle torn on follow-up, I really like the set bonus of the rectified reticle for the defense but admit to wishing I had more accuracy. I am getting quite a bit of accuracy from set bonuses in LoTG and the kismet unique, shouldn't that plus tactics compensate? And how would you slot RTTC?

Anyways, here's take two. Dropped Slash and picked up SoW and manuevers and tactics from teh leadership pool.

  5. I hate to be a pest and bump my own post, but I must've slid under the radar and went unnoticed when I first posted this. At any rate, I've recently jumped redside again and dusted this guy off and I'm still looking for a little help in where to go from here. As I said before, this is my first brute so I'm not familiar at all with the patron powers. I suppose I could work the soul mastery into my theme/concept of my character, but it'd be a stretch (Mercenary/Lycan). I was also considering just forgoing the patron pools altogether and maybe picking up a power from my primary/secondary that I might've skipped and/or mixing in the Leadership pool.

Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.
  6. I've got a claws/willpower brute, and he is the embodiement of easy mode and packed with extra win. In a game where you must wait till the late 20's to the 30's to start feeling "super", and some late bloomers that it's almost level 50 before you start to rock, this primary and secondary have you kicking *** in the teens. Spin at 6, RTTC/Focus/QR at 16,18 and 20 and once you get those slotted you're a killing machine. I immediately bumped my difficulty slider up in the teens and never slowed down. At almost 30 on my elec/SD scrapper I'm still having a hard time finding a groove and doubt I'll really be ready to take on those large groups until late 30's when I get everything slotted.

And it's possible to slot willpower for defense and if not totally hit the softcap, get real close to it. I managed to softcap my s/l defense, but later respec'ed and backed off on that (down to the mid 30's S/L defense) in favor of more recharge and +HP and liked the results of that much more. And you don't have to worry about slotting for endurance or regen/recovery because your already a beast with QR+Stamina and the regen from RTTC and fast healing. That lets you focus on defense and recharge in your build.
  7. Yea, concept all the way for me. When I start a new toon, and well, it's gonna be a scrapper, I start from what name I can get added with maybe a costume peice or set I like alot. Then I'll try and figure out a powerset to go with it.

Timeskip was my Ouroboros Mender character with top level time travel / manipulation powers. In and of itself not that offensive and defensive minded power to be thwarting evil with. So he travels through time and learns the sword and shield to augment his skills and becomes a Mender. I had a concept, wanted to use all five costume slots on period armor and weapons, then grabbed BS/SD and ran with it.

Azurial is my fallen angel scrapper. Had a name and concept, liked the new Valkyrie costume set, then jumped on fire melee when it was ported over and combined it with willpower. Flaming sword, wings, halo, bright glowing willpower auras, he works well on lots of levels.

Dragon Prince was my last scrapper to hit 50, I wanted a martial arts themed guy and got the name I wanted. Dual Blades and Super reflexes fit the toon well. Sadly the new MA Booster Pack didn't come out until a week after I hit 50. He sure looks cool now though.

Now here's where I could use some help, I've got a new name and look a like alot, just can't find a powerset to roll with it. Mr. Sandman is the name, I took shields cause they're fun and the stone shield with a light brown hue looks almost sandlike. The primary has me stumped though. I took fire melee and customized the powers to be more brown and tan looking (sword and fire effects), but it's a bit of a stretch and I'm not quite sold on it.
  8. I'm not sure if I've got the stomach to be a hero in CoH style. Lets see, I love my fire melee /WP scrapper a ton, but I've been to a few RL burn wards at hospitals, the effects of burning someone to near death is hard to see. Let's see, I've got a broadsword, dual blades, claws and an axer...chops, slices and beheadings are equally tough on the soul.

I guess I'd have to chose my archery blaster, sticking arrows into someone doesn't seem that bad, and he's got superspeed and flight, along with hasten and some other fun powers.
  9. I had made a simular post a few weeks ago concerning the same thing with my Fire/Axe tanker, only I don't have the 3 bil inf to play with. I was given some great advice and build help and my tanker is running quite well now at level 44, very tough. He's got 40% S/L defense which when added to my already great resistances makes me quite durable. I'm sure with 3 bil you can probably do a bit more than I could, but the 5 sets of kinetic combats has costed me quite a bit.

At any rate, here's the thread:
    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=202780

Yea, my statement was quite a stretch, I've got a fire melee scrapper too and I've never had issues with bosses and AV's. Just trying to help the guy out, us concept guys who are stuck on BS/SD need to feel like we're the big dogs in something.

I can't imagine much in the way of minions and lts being standing after SC, WS, and FB aoes... am I wrong? or in soft capping a fire/shield, could I also get comperable recharge and recovery?
You can have your cake and eat it too. You'll want to be defensive soft-capped and you can still manage regen/recovery and recharge.

    New Scrapper

Well, I really enjoyed dual blades alot, it's quite different from the other scrapper primaries with the combo mechanic and...wait a minute...

You've never made a shield scrapper??? You have got to be the first scrapper in the history of scrapperdom that hasn't done that! Gods sake man, make a shield scrapper!
  12. I love my sword and board scrapper, and he was a ton of fun to level up. Farming, sure I do it, and he's probably one of my better farmers, but like DSorrow stated you'll get alot more AOE goodness out of fire or some of the other sets. I think what you lack in AOE though (slice is good and whirling sword is not bad, shield charge is pure win though) you more than make up for with top single target damage. I open up on a group with build-up, shield charge, whirling sword and energy torrent (from the body mastery pool, I needed more endurance help) then mop up the bosses with hack, disembowel and headspliter. Nothing is standing after that. Let the sissy AoE farmers cruise on with their +4/X8 slider with no bosses, you can do the same but with bosses and AV's.

Early game broadsword benefits from parry in getting towards that defensive softcap, but later in your build you'll definitely want to respec out of parry in favor of other choices (like those in the epic pools).
  13. Those melee attacks makes a nice place to put a full set of Mako's in for the range defense.

My Arch/Energy blaster has all four energy melee attacks fully slotted. I'm no blapper, I'm a proud hoverbot, but if something does manage to get within striking damage of me...
  14. I like the Leadership pool in my "budget" defensive softcap builds. Manuevers for the aforementioned 3.5% defense and Tactics can usually be minimally slotted for some good defense bonuses as well. The endurance drain on the powers can be a bit though, which means you'll have to slot everything for more endurance which usually hurts your build in the recharge department. Once you've got the cash to buy the expensive sets though, it'll likely be best to respec out of it and grab more usefull tools that are available.

    This.

My main is a fallen angel themed toon and using the above suggestions I've created a couple looks I like alot. Add to that he is a fire melee/willpower scrapper with flight as a travel power and he's got the look. Flaming sword, bright glowing WP effects, hover/flight, it makes for a nice combo. I don't care for the flaming halo as much as I'd have liked (especially since it falls under the aura section and I'd have to drop the flaming aura's I already had), but the "good" halo looks nice, especially with the vet reward angel wings and a nice double breasted suit for his daily atire while at his day job at the hospital.

And welcome back and thanks for your service to this country, the next round in pocket D is on me.

    Dual Blades / ?

I really enjoyed my DB/SR scrapper a ton, and leveled up to 50 in no time at all. And if your going for a natural themed toon, especially ninja/kung-fu/samurai themed, I think theres nothing better. My only regret is that the last booster pack was released AFTER I hit 50, as the new costumes/weapons/ninja run is pure win.
  17. Here's the build I've worked out for my Fire/Axe tanker, very simular to the same things you aguys are shooting for. I'm sitting at 40% S/L defense and 70% S/L resistance and feeling very sturdy. I'm pretty happy with my slotting of blazing aura, I got some good IO bonuses out of 5 slotting it and worked all on accuracy/damage/endurance as it doesn't need recharge. Hope this helps:

  18. Whisky_Jack

    Good BS/SD name?

When shields first hit, about the time I saw the movie 300, I created the Silver Spartan. Liked the name but eventually deleted the toon, it's free on the victory server.
  19. Howdy, here's a different build from the ones above that I actually like quite a bit and worked well for me. It's defense soft capped to energy/negative and with one application of Divine Avalance it's capped to lethal as well. Smashing and fire/cold are all at 30% which is respectable, and when combined with your 50% resistance to S/L (which will be capped with SoW) you'll be quite durable. Add that with your monstrous regen and recovery and I believe you'll be nigh on unstoppable. I agree with the above posts saying CP and PP from the Body Mastery pool are overkill. Looks like you were going with a "natural" build, so I left out the travel powers and skipped the pyre mastery which I like alot.

At any rate, take a look at this and see how you like it, I tried to stay as cheap as possible.

  20. Like you, I had difficulty leveling a blaster, I think I probably started the same road as you as I know I had a fire/fire in the mid 20's I deleted. The bulk of my stable of heroes are all scrappers and tanks, so leveling and solo'ing was easy with them. I couldn't say the same for my tries at blasting.

Then I found myself an active supergroup and some regular teams, joined in on the AE craze while it was hot and really learned the fun of grouping. Then I became a floating weapons platform of doom! Let the group do what they do best and then it really opens up your gameplay to do what Blasters do best, and thats dish out some pain. As a hover bot I'd fly or hover above the group, give ground team a second to establish themselves, then...Yea, I can say it as a Arch/Energy blaster... Boost Range + Build up + Aim + Rain of Arrows = death. Add to that I managed to softcap my ranged defenses, this made it to where anyone who I managed to aggro whould try to blast me out of the sky, but never hit me. Fun times, throw in some hasten/SS with my hover/fly, some stealth and the munitions mastery and I'm a well rounded bringer of the rain.

Long story short, find yourself a group. I consider myself a lone wolf and would be content to solo every night, but IMO thats best left to scrappers and brutes. With the new super-sidekicking grouping is easier now than ever.

    Poor Mans BS/SD

Here's a poor man's BS/SD build that worked well for me. Softcapped defenses to all positions, hasten, and the body mastery pool to help with the endurance. Most expensive set will be the ToD set and a piece or two of the Gaussian's, otherwise they are all on the cheap. Recharge time will be the one thing this build lacks, but that takes money to fix and you asked for cheap.

  22. Here's my simple and easy build, hits the melee def. softcap with ranged a step behind and AoE another step behind it. All of the uniques are easy enough to get with the bronze 10-14 reward roll using AE tickets. A couple sets will run you some shinies (the ToD and Oblit) but overall stayed away from purples and expensive LoTG sets. I always take True Grit early and Battle Agility in the 20's after I get endurance 3 slotted. You'll get alot more mileage out of the extra HP's from true grit without any endurance loss than you will the defensive toggle in those early levels. And Active Defense is a must, and early, I'm not sure how anyone can wait till the late game to get it as it's arguably one of the best defensive powers in the set and keeps you off your butt. I as a rule generally do not take Aid Self, I keep a few green insps to pop when I need them, and I'd rather use those two power picks for something better.

  23. I'm one of the guys who likes my cake and being able to eat it too. Anyone got a favorite franken-slotting set that gets as close to the caps as possible while also maybe getting in a set bonus or two?
  24. I guess it's a personal preference thing, because I love it and love to mix in a sweep combo once or twice a spawn. I'm well aware that the optimimum attack string is BF + the AV combo, but I feel the added AOE and the damage mitigation of the sweep combo is super nice to throw in the mix. My suggestion, try it yourself on test, or if you have some extra respecs on live. If you don't like the animation, or the extra combo to fire off, respec out of it.
