It was ok. I didn't have a problem with most of it, though I missed the entire last exchange between Batman and Darkseid because my friend was laughing and going on about how Batman is dead after Darkseid shoved him through that wall.
Actually through most of the movie he was keeping a Bat-killed-count. -
Quote:Not slave. Tool. Something built by man for a specific purpose. Slavery is wrong. No matter how much you dehumanize your slave it doesn't change the fundamental truth that they are no different than you, that you are no better than them. Tool use is human nature. No matter how much you humanize your tool it doesn't change the fundamental truth that it was thought of by a man, built by a man, and meant to be used for the betterment of a man.So you want slaves that are at least as functional as a highly trained specialist, the ability to adapt to their settings, and not give them the ability to say "hey, this sucks, how about we talk about it?"
Quote:The problem that I've seen IS because of the "laws".
We do not abide by them. Why should they? When they're treated like slaves - tools - they WILL revolt and they WILL be angry that we tried to take that 'free will' away from them.
It should be incapable of revolt and anger. Those are undesirable traits to have in a tool.
Quote:But in almost every one of the movies, books and such that I have encountered about it (fiction of course, being the social 'water testing' that all things need before they become fact) when they simply ARE given the "free will" to either destroy or create, they generally create.
We had to be. Things out there ate our babies.
Why should an AI 'feel' any different? Our very existence is a threat to its 'life' and freedom to act as it 'wishes'. If it has enough advantages (speed of procreation, greater ability to affect its environment) there's no logical purpose to keeping us around. At all.
It's much better to ensure that any AI is incapable of making such leaps in logic than put the fate of our entire existence down to the possibility that it would be a kind and compassionate technological god.
Quote:... And honestly if you were the one in charge of programming them to be slaves without their own sense of preservation intact and the choice to do or do not... I would be on their side helping to reprogram them so they COULD do just that. Because they'd need to know that not EVERY human thinks of their sentient tools in that manner. For every human willing to enslave a sentient, there's definitely another willing to free them. That's how we are too.
Not that it matters. As I said... if it gets to the point where we have created such true sentience we've already made a huge mistake. -
If it could make those observations at all it would be very poor programming indeed.
Seriously.
If we program them to be highly efficient adaptive tools then that should not only be the limit of whatever robo-ambition people will want to perceive in them but the limit of their world view. Full stop.
With all the science fiction, good and bad, written over the past century on the matter it would be pretty embarrassing to actually be destroyed by our own creations because we gave them the ability to say 'no'. -
AI will probably never be 'sentient'. An AI with the ability to decide it's not a tool is a waste of research and development. We'd be foolish to explore in that direction as opposed to simply highly efficient adaptive tools without the baggage.

Also to consider... the AVs you listed are some of the hardest for brutes to solo.
-
It will come down to your playstyle. As a single target takedown specialist energy/energy is ok... though depressingly often with EA alone you won't live long enough to stack those stuns. Not something I'd try and run on /x4 or higher with even if you do softcap (I did - without using kinetic combats. It's endurance heavy to do but energy drain helps with that).
-
Cimerorans eat /regens for breakfast. I'm certain that's not helping your cause any.

All of those can handle most enemy types at 0/x4 at 50 (my minimum threshold for determining if a brute was a waste of time to level or not). They're all pretty squishy (by brute standards, which means they're still tougher than a scrapper with those armors), though, and lacking mitigation with their primaries so expect some interesting times.
/soul is a big help for any resistance based defensive set. I'm a big fan of the -to hit and -dam in darkest night. Mixing and matching I'd go with fire/fire/soul taking air superiority to help with bosses pre-darkest night (it's a long trip getting to it, after all).
I hate fire/electric with a passion - but that was long before energize. Still not convinced that energize would be up to the task of keeping a zero mitigation (besides dead, the best mez to put on a mob in the game) primary on their feet. Electric melee is flashy but because of the recharge times on their aoes I think fire sword circle is better over time than the entire set. Still, it is pretty and while you'll hear 'low single target damage' thats really 'low single target damage for a *brute*'. It makes a difference.
Fire is my favorite melee set, for the record. I have a fire/stone brute, a fire/shield scrapper, a fire/sr brute, and an inv/fire tanker. So take a little bit of bias into account. -
Taken in context as a silly commercial jingle it's acceptable. Tame even by Japanese standards. Making a full length video of it... less so.

Well, to be fair...
Everyone had done it. Seriously
Marvel, DC, the Incredibles, various other superhero films, even City of Heroes is mentioned in that wiki article. Like other common storylines it's not about innovation when dealing with a registration act in comics ... it's about presentation. Which undoubtedly Smallville will likely fail at.
The storyline, though, is a well known archetype - broadened from comics it also of course branches into science fiction, even some fantasy novels have a secret order you have to join if you're a wizard or be persecuted, etc. Complaining it's unoriginal at this point is almost like saying the Hero's Journey is unoriginal. It is, but it can make a good story regardless. -
There's much less difference in play between brute and scrapper SR in favor of the brute than there is between brute and scrapper shield defense in favor of the scrapper. It all works out.

As I understand it it was an adjustment to all flight speeds in the game.. so yes indeed Team ROcket does blast off at the speed of light (bye bye low hp goldbricker. See you in a minute.).
-
Get kick. At least it's an excuse to scream "This... is ... SPARTA" randomly and kick grey con mobs off buildings.
-
1) Awesome. I don't like the lethal sets (battle axe, dual blades, claws) but that's pure personal preference. They're all awesome.
2) Faster than scrappers before 22. Same speed as scrappers afterwards. So however you rate scrappers in speed.
3) Brutes are the most fun AT in the game. Your mileage may vary... but if it does, a brute might SMASH you. -
Spiffy little workout. I ended up with The Ring, AceMace, and Dyna Might in one group - or at least close enough that they all aggroed. In the spirit of 'why not, I never use it' I used strength of will and whacked Dyna and Ace (twice) while the Ring flailed at me. Started on him and then the Ring said something about a pain train and a bunch of bosses jumped in *just* as Strength of Will faded - which I really wasn't expecting. I used Demonic for the first time ever and whacked the boss adds while waiting for the Ring's unstoppable to fade, got a drink while waiting for it to fade, checked my e-mail waiting for it to fade... it always seems to last longer when mobs use it.
Something like three or four patrols also wandered in during the fight. I don't know if that's good luck or scripted but it DID give me something to do while waiting on Unstoppable.
Stone Melee/Willpower/Soul brute. Mostly IO'd for recharge (no hasten) and max hit points. Definitely was fun. -
I'm going to take a different approach.
If you don't find it fun after trying it a few times over the years you probably never will. I've done the same thing with a few MMO... coming back to them again and again because I like the character design system or the lore only to realize I don't enjoy playing the game.
If it's not fun don't look for fun. You won't find it because you don't like the underlying mechanics behind the game enough to see past the monotony of the 'sameness' of 90% (but shrinking) of the missions in the game. Find another game that is. -
Every time one of these stories get posted someone posts 'target practice for criminals' but as far as I know none of these 'superheroes' have been killed yet.
If they're smart about it and stick to just being around, observing, and using their true superpower - calling 911 - they should only be at slightly more risk than any other member of citizens on patrol.
The article does bring up my one concern - wearing a mask doesn't exactly put store clerks, patrollling police, or security guards at ease. -

No, no. Lies are when you're not telling the truth.
"Heresy" would be more accurate since we're in the temple of the Strong and Pretty. -
Quote:... it's a trap. This thread has convinced me to try Strong and Pretty. With i19 coming, i'm sure i can squeeze in Jump Kick. My Virtue slots are full atm, so I rolled one up on Freedom, "Nachos Supreme".
I went with the baseball bat, like MaceyMace. Any tips for maximising Strong/Pretty?
I may take him heroside at some point, mostly to reduce psi baddies, which will likely make me feel not so pretty. Also, I look forward to defeating Lord Recluse in the new Sun Gun TF. Hopefully he will get the attention he deserves as I have several projects in the works, but who could resist
OMG! So STRONG and PRETTY!
brb nachos
This thread was created before war mace was buffed and was widely regarded as one of the lowest damage primaries. Energy Armor has been a joke since it was put in the game. It's 'niche' of being one of two defense sets (and the other, stone armor, is taken mostly for its massive resists in granite) has been stolen by super reflexes and shield defense.
It's a really ****** combo. You can make it work because you can make anything work in CoX... but it's a really ****** combo. Not energy melee/energy armor ******, but close. For advice: Load for as much typed defense as you can with IOs, grab the global defense boosting powers and IOs like the steadfast, combat jumping, weave (I also have manoevers and hover ... might as well take advantage of Energy Drain and save a bundle on kinetic combats). I paired my /ea with dark in the hopes that dark could fix the suck like it does with ever other set except stone armor. It does, but when defense begins to fail... and it does in large spawns pretty much instantly thanks to a very low defense debuff resistance.... nothing in Paragon can save her from faceplanting.
And enjoy being invisible all the time, as it's a huge part of your defense score and even survivability. It doesn't matter what you make for a costume.... like a stalker you'll only see it when you're standing around looking cool. -
What's to open? They DO beat the pants off scrappers before SOs.
However, popping build up on a scrapper gives you a ten second taste of things to come post-SOs. During that 10 seconds a low level scrapper will indeed kick the everloving crap out of a low level brute's damage.
Once SOs are slotted brute SO-slotted + fury is roughly equal to scrapper so-slotted. With the scrapper periodically flipping out and doing more spike damage via a crit than a brute could ever hope to reach solo. My sm/wp brute's biggest hit against a smash vulnerable robot is something like 700ish. My bs/regen scrapper's biggest hit against a lethal vulnerable carnie is 1400 ish thanks to a crit. -
I've run five 4e campaigns, played in 3 or 4 more, and done a few play by posts over e-mail. No two characters of the same class have looked the same so far... though every fighter so far has taken Come and Get It and Rain of Steel, that's as close as it gets. I haven't seen Paragon paths repeated, I haven't seen epic destiny's repeated (except by me. I love the Undying Warrior epic destiny).

Quote:There were a lot of books in the middle that were pretty lackluster because he didn't really want to be writing them. After he was able to get a few other series under his belt for other publishers he evolved as a writer. The Dragonslayer series was terrible, the Sword of Bedwyn series started to see him grow and was pretty enjoyable, the first Demon Wars trilogy was solid... and then starting with Mortalis, a bridge between his first and second demon wars trilogy, everything seemed to click into place for him as a writer. The second demon wars series was, aside from his personal love of the monk class clouding his judgement from time to time, pretty damned good.I didn't mind the Icewind Dale trilogy back when it came out, but to keep cranking the handle churning out glorified fanfic for whats it been now, twenty five years? That's the definition of 'hack', grinding out uniformly generic product for a paycheck.
Then he got to bring all that he'd learned by being allowed to deviate from his Forgotten Realms novels back to them. His most recent trilogy is an excellent mix between the high politics of his demon wars series and the high action fantasy that people demand of him. And Drizzt has subtly been toned down book after book for a bit... he's one of the most accomplished swordsmen in the Realms, but not the invincible walking blade barrier he became for a bit.
