Fun?

Call Me Awesome

Hello.

I first started a CoH Account in 04. I can't seem to find anything to keep me playing beyond level 12 or so.

I get bored.

Is there anything fun to do? Any grouping? I am not sure if I have grouped with anyone, ever. Well maybe once or twice.

When I first started playing, there were no real items or inventions etc.

I run around the streets and encounter the regular thugs, I will do some missions but everything becomes very routine. Is there anything fun to do .. at all?

I love the character creation, who doesn't?
I would love to find something to do.

Help me out.

Hello,

A couple of resources for you, head to the server sections of the Forums and see what is going on in your server and ask for advice there. There is also the Mentor project thread http://boards.cityofheroes.com/forumdisplay.php?f=579 check it out.

Welcome back to City and I hope you find something here to keep your interest.

Already mentioned, but I'll second the recommendation to join the Mentor Project.

Beyond that, there are a couple things you can do to make it easier to find teams.

* Use the existing team search tool and set for search flag to Looking For Any. You can do this by clicking the Team button above the default chat window.

* Join your server's global chat channels. These are usually listed in a thread in the individual server sections here on the forum. These are great places to find teams for events, taskforces, badging, etc.

What server are you on?

To have fun I definitely think you should team up. Get to know some folks, even if casually, and look at interacting with others. Try Freedom or Virtue -- those servers are heavily populated and you'll have the best chance of teaming and leveling up. Don't forget that you can team with anyone. You will automatically be promoted to the leaders level, less one. If you team with a level 50, you'll be level 49.

Check out Praetoria (gotta buy the expansion). The missions are much more interesting for soloists. And since it's new there's a lot more other folks also leveling up their characters.

Also try interacting on the forums some more. Especially your server forum. You can meet folks who play on your server, find out what the popular things to do are, and get yourself invited to those events that you're interested in.

I don't have any specific cure for "it's boring." Different strokes for different folks. But the whole point of any MMO game is to team up, so try that and see if it makes a difference for you.

The server forums global channel lists are a great place to start. If you are on (or don't mind moving) to Justice, Freedom, or Virtue you can check out th Repeat Offenders website.

We are a bunch fun people, questionble humor (), our few rules generally boil down to "Be kind; Rewind". And there are usually a number of us on at any given time.

Have you visited some of the city's sights? Dark Astoria, Ouroboros... Founders Falls is lovely! [watch out for the snipers.] Go to Striga Isle, admire the volcano!

... One other point as far as gameplay: Before level 12, you don't really get any story arcs. You may not CARE about story arcs; the only real difference is the text - the reason WHY you're beating up this bunch of thugs in this anonymous warehouse.

Above 12, you start to get the answers to questions like "Who makes clockwork and how do they work?" "What's Dr. Vazhilok want?" "What's up with the Tsoo and all their groovy bosses? " You start seeing enemies that do more than just hit you with baseball bats.

Above 12, you start getting some interesting powers as well- not that your core powers are BAD, but some of the chrome is awfully shiny.

Above, umm, 20 or 22, you start getting DISTINCTLY more powerful.

So those are some carrots which you may or may not find tasty.

Teaming is a distinctly different experience from soloing as well. I barely play the game normally any more [well, after 72 months or something...] but I still log on three times a week for a couple hours per time to play with friends, and a couple times a week to team with strangers.

I'm going to take a different approach.

If you don't find it fun after trying it a few times over the years you probably never will. I've done the same thing with a few MMO... coming back to them again and again because I like the character design system or the lore only to realize I don't enjoy playing the game.

If it's not fun don't look for fun. You won't find it because you don't like the underlying mechanics behind the game enough to see past the monotony of the 'sameness' of 90% (but shrinking) of the missions in the game. Find another game that is.

Um...make some friends that's where the fun begins.

OP,

The thing I see missing in your post is what you consider fun?

If you think that every mission map will be unique, well, you are going to be disappointed.

Do you enjoy story? If so, get Going Rogue. Amazing stories there.

What do you want to do, and we can tell you if CoX has it.

You should really make an effort to get above the teens. Powers-wise, you'll get your AOEs and controls, and more slotting which is a great confidence builder. You will be able to look at a large group of enemies and think "yeah, I think I can take most, if not all of them out, before I go down!"

Which leads to another encouragement to join more teams. On a team, you can experience large enemy groups regularly. Well, you can get large enemy groups in Hazard zones, but a team can give you a little back up.

In addition, with large teams, you will have a better chance of having that gung-ho idiot who'll keep things interesting. Whether you're trying to keep him alive or you're trying to keep yourself alive as you're immersed in his mess, every day will be an adventure. And who know, maybe you'll get to the point where you're that gung-ho idiot because you're that good.

Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

I'll just add my two cents and reaffirm the advice you have already gotten. Find out the names of the global channels your server has that promote teams. On Viture we have Virtue TF (devoted to forming and running task forces, strike forces and trials), Virtue LFT Alpha (helps anyone looking for a team doing anything.. including TFs, SFs, and trials) and Virtuebadges2009 (a channel for badgers mainly but also a good source for teams since a LOT of badges revolve around Task Forces, Trials or defeating X number of a certain enemy group).

The teens are a bit tedious.. you don't have a lot of powers yet, don't have a permanent travel power until 14, and until Issue 19 comes out you seem to run out of end constantly and find yourself resting between almost every other mob (depending on the character's AT and powers) but if you get on a good team and even just run radio or newspapers missions the levels fly by quickly and you can be in your 20s. Do a few of the early Task forces like Positron 1 + 2 or Synapse and you can really level quickly as well. Oh and don't forget these days everyone is out there running tip missions for the rewards so watch for Hero. Vigilante, Rogue or Villain tip teams advertising in broadcast. Sure you can only earn 5 tips mission credits a day but there is nothing saying yo can't run more than that and on an 8 man team level quicker. Okay so you are NOT a 20 level and aren't supposed to do tips missions but with Super Side Kick no 20 level tip team would balk at inviting a 12 level along to pad the team and increase the XP earned while theyrk toward tip rewards.

I have taken a character from level 1 to level 15 and beyond in as litlle as one day and if you have the time there is nothing that says you can't make level 20 in one day either if you find a few good teams. Hit level 22 and you get access to your Single Origin Enhancers and suddenly your character REALLY gets stronger. From there start working on IOS and adding more powers.. About level 20 the stories arcs get better and the game gets much more interesting.

Welcome to the game and hope you come to enjoy it as much as i have the past 5 years :-D

"Fun" is very subjective. If you don't find the game fun, it doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with the game, it just may not be for you. Try teaming, though. I prefer to solo, but others find teaming much more fun. Run taskforces and such.

Another thing I note is that you sound like you street sweep more than running actual missions. That does get very tiresome. Stick to the missions and actually read the stories behind them.

12 is really only just the beginning of things. You've only just graduated out of training enhancements and barely have any of your powers.

Yeah, I've got to ask just what you've been doing. 12 takes... well, no time at all. You also have barely any powers, not even a travel power (just the prerequisites.) You haven't seen most of the content, you've gotten to the point where you can join *one* task force (Positron) -

What have you been doing?

Have you left Atlas Park/Galaxy City/Mercy Island? (Nova Praetoria, if you have Going Rogue?)

WHEN are you playing, and on what server?

And the big question - what do you enjoy? Find a character that you enjoy playing more than others, make that your "main," and use it alone for a while to join teams, task forces and the like.

If you don't find the game fun then it might not be the game for you. Although i would give it more than a few hours of play to make that judgment. Liking specific elements of a game is no guarantee you'll like the game as a whole.

i've tried a few other MMOs and none of them convinced me to sign up for a subscription. One of them was even the most popular MMO in the English-speaking world and it still didn't win me over. Tolkien-based fantasy settings with cartoony elves and orcs just aren't to my taste no matter how much i may like other aspects and mechanics of the game. The other MMOs also had elements or themes that i liked, but not enough to sign up. Not every game is for every player, no matter how much you like some parts of it. Still, i think Memphis Bill raises some good questions that would need to be answered before anyone can really help the OP.

Fun is subjective but I find the most fun in teaming with friends and occasionally doing really silly things.

Level 12 is just a couple of hours of play with a good team; even level 20 usually only takes an experienced player about 5 hours. I find that the lower levels tend to be a drag; for me a character starts getting fun sometime in the mid-20's and becomes more so as I level up.

Honestly though it's the friends I've made in the game that keep me playing.
