Quote:I don't know if you had anything to do with the reason for this, but Gregor was one of my favorite bits of the game and part of why most of my characters started in Galaxy City: I loved his remarks about Azuria being crazy, the way it made the game world seem a little more real, a place on its own.Derek Amberson (old Galaxy City contact): Sean Fish's Amber character
Gregor Richardson (old Galaxy City contact): My Amber character
The Amber game lived on in City of Heroes... until Dr. Aeon dropped Shivan meteors on Galaxy City anyway.
It was the many, many ways available that we could fit into that world that made it wonderful. Our characters are could be just about anything we wanted them to be.
Thank you, Matt, for everything you've done to create that world. I will miss it. -
A concept I've used a few times, which you're welcome to use, is a corps of heroes, called Earth Ire, recruited by Mother Earth (or whatever name the person might be familiar with) to protect and save the good creatures and people of Earth from the evil, destructive ones. All the heroes have powers drawn from the Earth. Water fits right in.

I love that you came up with a bio that actually explains why she does that TF over and over, and only that. I makes me imagine a whole underground community of people who, as you say, clean up the place in between their real life.

Quote:Sorry, I don't consider myself "nobody." And the only thing about the changes in the past two years that actually bothers me is the destruction of Galaxy City. Galaxy City wasn't the popular place, so it wasn't needed, so boom? And the heck with those of us who preferred it?So they were okay as long as you started in the zone where nobody ever started.
I feel just a tiny bit resentful every time I make a new non-Praetorian hero. I really miss Gregor telling them Azuria is crazy. I wish, probably in vain, I know, that they would create a new 0 to 50 series of story arcs that involve rebuilding GC. Only then will I forgive them for destroying it. -
The Kent Police Museum in the U.K.:
"Today the image of the blue police box is a trademark of the BBC as it is widely associated with the science fiction television programme Doctor Who?, in which the protagonist's time machine, a TARDIS, is in the shape of a police box."
(Quote is in the text just below the pic of the red police box.) -
Tyger42 is right. I think the real problem is that the tank was created for a specific role that has never really been much needed in CoX. Aggro-gathering ability is the only special talent a tank has, and that's only worth having on a large team. I leveled my first tank during the first year of the game, and even then defenders and controllers quickly made a tanker pointless on large teams as well. Once melee shielding was reduced, that became even more true.
There was the farming-a-whole-zone thing, but almost nobody ever thought that was a good idea, including me. Really boring. -
I'm quite against having previously earned badges renamed. My character doesn't even like Stateman, but he did rescue him and that's what the badge should say. The "Pal" is ironic.
I really, really find it a stretch to see this as Matt Miller becoming like Jack Emmert, though. This is nowhere near Mr. Emmert's league in in arrogance even if it were an actual decision by Matt.
Paragon Studios has been good about doing things players have wanted for years, but sometimes just misses the boat on things. I don't see any malicious intent here. -
Just because a hero has to have his legal name publicly connected to his superhero name doesn't mean he can't have a secret identity anyway.
There are always ways around things like that. The alter-ego just probably wouldn't be under his legal name.
I had a story plotted out in which my hero did just that. He conveniently ran into a full-bearded fellow about his size who wanted to get out of town, so he helped him go and assumed that identity.
I'm sure there are many other ways to create a secret identity. And the hero in civvies could just flat out deny being the hero: "Oh no -- that's not me. We just happen to have the same name. I mean, Mark Johnson is hardly an unusual name, is it?" Heroes can have masks, after all.
It's not like law enforcement in Paragon City has time on its hands to investigate heroes for suspicion of secret identity. They might even prefer that they have secret identities -- it makes fewer people (heroes' families, friends etc.) obvious targets who have to be watched. -
Quote:I don't think it's necessarily pseudo-intellectualism or ignorance. I'm a copy editor, and what I often see in colleagues is a belief that English and its proper usage are reasonable, rational and sensible -- or maybe a need for that to be so. So they cling to any facts that seem to allow the use of reason in dictating usage. "Deci" means a tenth so decimate must refer to a tenth of something. "Over" and "above" are spacial concepts, so they don't mean "more than." Same with "under," "beneath" and "less than." I'm still waiting for "autopsy" to be banned from our paper for (supposedly) not meaning what everybody thinks it means. I roll my eyes a lot.Yet another pseudo-intellectual internet poster who doesn't understand that the origin of a word has only a small bearing on its use and meaning in common language.
I would love for new terms and usages to catch on only when they are truly clever or useful. I want "literally" never to mean "virtually" and "virtually" to not mean just "in software and/or on the Internet." But I don't feel the need to stop language from changing or to make it always sensible. That would lessen the fun of it for me.
You can write, and sometimes get away with editing, in a way that makes you feel safe and secure, if that's your preference. I don't see the point, but I don't think that makes a person a fake or uninformed. Just sometimes annoying.
Language changes, and even the editors at the most influential publications or publishing houses (certainly not me), the professors at the greatest universities, and even the stuffiest of old English teachers (who may have the most influence of all) can do no more than tap the brakes. -
Quote:Maybe I have developed a cold, twisted heart from paranoia, but the idea that the devs may look at EM again just makes me desperately want to hide my poor /EM tank away somewhere and gather all my other heroes around to guard him.

I always feel sorry for folks who are embedded, though less so for people outside war zones.
I sounds so uncomfortable at least, if not actually painful. -
OK, I'll play ...
I'm a heterosexual woman who's happily not married right now with a grown daughter. We have between us three VIP accounts, two of which are more than 7 years old. We love CoH so much they have never lapsed despite many months when we had little or no time to play, just because we wanted them there, just in case.
We buy expansion packs, not all, but most of them, including the lacy, frilly and women-must-be-half-undressed-to-be-seen ones.
Many of my characters are male, because I prefer dressing my Ken dolls over my Barbies nowadays. I get frustrated sometimes by the lack of options. My female characters put on little bits of nothing sometimes just to laugh at how distracted and easy-to-defeat some males get in their presence. But I often like to see them as extensions of myself, only with much better figures, and when I think about how I would dress as superheroine (heroine? really? we still use that word), well, one or two bustiers do it all, but you can never have enough good jackets and coats.
My daughter is, well, solidly beyond the legal drinking age now and thankfully mature, smart and sensible. She uses all the various options for her female characters, from metallic armor to lacey bustiers. I don't worry (much) about her self-image or what she might be "saying" to all the adolescent-minded males in game.
If she were a young teen, this whole costume debate would be of much more significance to me. As it is, I'd like more female options that are cool clothes rather than just skimpy and cold, but it's not as big an issue for me as say, a good solo incarnate path. But if my daughter were 14, it would matter a lot.
The point being: I'm a woman. I'm a mom. I pay to support this game too. I LOVE RESPECTABLE OPTIONS FOR WOMEN and MORE GOOD JACKETS FOR EVERYBODY. -
Towel cape. With optional 42.
Skeleton body option.
Cook's apron
Mismatched shoes (and other I-was-in-a-hurry options)
Robot/armor set cobbled together from pieces of cars, appliances, computers and other machines.
Computer-monitor head -- flat and CRT -- with optional webcam on top
Invisible headless-look head, and cameras and eyes on body -

Quote:Yes! I always loved Maverick. I'd much rather have a hero like him than whoever the Gunslinger in the pack is supposed to be. And if the two themes this generated is too much for one pack, make two. I'll wait....
If the concept art in fact does portray two compelling, but distinct characters or roles, then perhaps the project manager should instead split the two and say "Awesome. Now give me a female version of that *points to Marty McFly* and a male equivalent of that *points to saloon girl*"
As I suggested, the equivalent of the saloon girl would have been the riverboat gambler male/old west barkeep/piano player--straw hat, arm garters, silk vest, etc. And the female equivalent of Marty would be some sort of Annie Oakley, with pants or long leather split skirt with fringe.
So, what are the shoulder cords about on the Gunslinger jacket, really? Does it mean he was a patrol leader in the War? I don't understand ... And the skulls? It's like they took some random bits they had sitting around and said, "We really need to do something with these. Let's throw them in there." Which isn't particularly a bad thing, I suppose ...
It's just that I've never made a character who would wear bones, so I don't get it. -
Dark Anything. The Dark sets seem to offer more variety in abilities per set, which keeps it interesting.

I really don't think there's any risk of soloable content producing rewards-per-minute equal to running the trials. That's fine. Most, if not all, of the game has reward rates that increase with the number of teammates. I play solo most of the time, and that doesn't trouble me.
I don't think, however, that the reward rate on a soloable incarnate path should somehow be artificially low just to push people toward the trials. I just don't get the fear that people will prefer to play solo unless it's made really unattractive.
Most people tend to be social. They generally want to do things with other people, even though they have times when they just want to be left alone or desire to play through content solo one time to enjoy the story. If there's resistant to taking part in group content, it's more likely to be a problem with the content. And overall, I really don't believe the developers want to balance unfun content with greater rewards. The current team strikes me as wanting to provide a truly appealing product.
So I'm expecting a solo incarnate path that gives i-rewards at a rate that's slower than the i-trial rate in a way that's comparable to the reward ratio of soloing vs. teaming in the rest of the game, given that the rest of the game doesn't have league content.
Or, my personal evaluation: How long does it take to take get from just-50 to fully incarnated via trials? Take that number of hours of playtime and multiply it by four, and that's what I'd consider a reasonable amount of solo play time to get there.
EDIT: On thinking more about it, I realize the solo rate is probably much longer than x4, particularly on some characters. -
It is annoying, but I did have success saving the setup as default, and it seemed to be reloadable. I don't have time right now to try logging on and off multiple times to see how long it works. You have to stay logged out a bit for a fair test.
(The default-saving and -reloading buttons I'm referring to are at the very bottom of the "General" page of the options window.) -
Quote:Location and size. I don't know about colors either.I have things moved around from the default interface, but not resized or recolored. What all is broken?
And apparently I reacted too soon. I tried resaving the setup as default, and then it reloaded as I want it. Assuming the saved defaults stick, then it's not much of a problem.
I know it's trivial, but for some reason I'm a bit obsessive about software window setups. (It's not just in games.) I'm not like that IRL, about, say, my physical desktop and the stuff on it. -
Quote:What she said. I can't even reload my default, which has/had? my preferred settings.Well this is just dandy. The UI resetting issue we reported in beta? Not fixed.
I am _NOT_ going to fix my UI every time I log in.
I will be taking a break from City until this is resolved.
For me this is about equivalent to having to recostume my character every time I log in. I'm surprised that so few people customize their UIs that they sent this live as is. -
This is slightly off-topic, but why do people ToT in a league rather than in regular teams? I think I missed something somewhere.

There's a building in Atlas Park with a rooftop park under a dome that you can get into by clicking on the stairway door on the building's west side.
The building is along the south wall, about half way between the sewer entrance and the southeast corner. Location is -963.0 12.9 749.1
Is it for a mission?
I wish there were a lot more places like this, where we can go into the buildings, aside from missions.
edit: Changed location because I realized that the "inside" probably didn't really have the same location as the building. -
Quote:I think this is a very good possibility. Times have been rough, in the U.S. at least, people are frustrated and angry about things they often have no control over, and the general level of expressed bile has risen almost everywhere. Why should the CoH forums be exempt....
That said, generally, I see most of the gaming communities turning into wretched hives of villainy and suspect it's more a case of outside factors coming in.
I've been hanging around for seven years, and the current forum is nowhere near the highest level of toxicity that I've seen. The enhancement-diversification-and-global-defense-nerf era holds that title. -
Quote:I always used to looked forward to holiday content. Now I'm just disappointed.By the way, for anyone who's not been on Test, the Trial is open to levels 15-50, but is run at level 29, and it requires 4 people to play it - that's 4 minimum, and 4 maximum.
And here I thought the idea now was supposed to be more options.
