  1. Good read - makes some valid points and this is definitely the kind of write up you want when your latest 'competitor' is still enjoying the post-launch spotlight.

So, devs... how does it feel being the 400lb gorilla of the superhero genre?
  2. If I could think of a way to convince IT that my work pc really really needs a gaming capable graphics card... hmm, not going to happen sadly.

On the other hand I did have a productive day yesterday compiling a list of about 80 new character concepts. WTB means to check name availability without logging in.
  3. I don't like speed runs, but then I dislike TFs in general, because as a story experience they are absolute failures, since noone other than the team leader actually gets most of the narrative. This is particularly annoying for those TFs that are the culmination of an entire zone worth of story arcs - Hess, Caverns of Transcendance, Katie, and arguably the LGTF and ITF.

(Or for that matter they're the only reason for the zone to exist - i.e. all the Shadow Shard TFs.)

I still want - always have, always will - an option to solo these. I couldn't care less about the reward so if I get 0 merits or whatever for completing one solo that's fine by me. Not that I'd do it all the time, but at least once, just once, I'd like to be able to follow the plot of a TF while I was running it, rather than having to read up on the wiki afterwards to find out what I just did.
  4. I thought it was a positive piece. For a 7 year old MMO now dealing with two newer, shinier competitors it came across as confident and got in a couple of sly digs at them for copying fantasy mmo concepts that just don't have any place in a superhero game.

    Maybe I'm a reincarnatoholic?
I just finished rebooting my entire roster last week. Five nights and a day in the character creator...

I fear Steelclaw's madness may be spreading.
  6. Whilst recognising the limits of tech and dev time I would love to see Paragon given a Praetoria style revamp.

It is rather ironic that the Rogue Isles feel less enclosed and oppressive than parts of Paragon City. Perhaps Statesman wants to keep the walls because they'll come in useful to control the populace when he stages his coup.

(What? Look at the evidence of other dimensions! Dictatorship is in this man's blood! It's only a matter of time!)
  7. By Yahtzee's standards that offhand comparison is quite high praise for CoH.
  8. I really don't think about the power descriptions much, especially if they don't fit with the character concept. Now the descriptions of DOs and SOs do get ignored, and they really should be genericised.
  9. I've spent so much time street sweeping in Atlas with new alts I now instinctively target the one I expect to run. It's particularly satisfying with a /dev blaster *web grenade*
  10. This would be useful. I currently have an occassionally active 2nd account so I don't have to pester other people when I'm adding new alts. I imagine even with this feature I'd still keep the 2nd active at least as often as it is at the moment since I have characters on both.

    So /signed.
  11. In my experience the powers you pick at 47 and 49 don't need to be heavily slotted. I can't imagine many people are leaving it that late to pick a power that is that vital to their build.

I'd be opposed to any extra slots. I realise that you're not specifically talking about the powers that people will take because they don't need to allocate picks to Fitness now, but any new slots would as likely as not be used in those powers.

3 new powers for free is quite enough. Extra slots on top of that would be power creep.
  12. Having run all of the Responsibility and Warden arcs, the Crusaders in Nova and Power in Nova and Imperial, I've seen blue [NPC] text in the chat window for more or less every ambush in GR, and in most cases if I spot the speech bubble that accompanies it, which I usually do, I know which direction they're coming from as well.

I honestly can't think of any that are silent.
  13. If you can't freely select the powersets then it's just a minion with a customisable appearance, and if we're going to have customisable minions then Masterminds are first in line for that.

If you can select the powersets then it's overpowered since it would be used, in practise, primarily to make buffbots. Sure some people would pick thematically linked powers, but for each 1 who did there'd be 100 selecting Speed Boost Boy or Healer Kid.

    So /unsigned.
  14. BV is invincible in that mission. You can't target her at all, so just flee and take on the resistance ambushes.

And don't go back. I finished off the ambushes and wandered back to see if she was still there. She was, and started shooting at me again.

I must admit the set up annoys me. I'd much prefer it if she just TP'd out like other NPCs do when you're not supposed to fight them.
  15. I'm fairly indifferent. I've never 'built toward stamina' when levelling up and usually ended up taking the pre-reqs and Stamina itself when there weren't any interesting powers to take in the 20s or 30s. I didn't even respec into it on Nightshade until after she hit 50. So I suppose it'll be nice that I don't have to think it so much.

I do think that some people are in for a shock when they realise that they'll still need to slot End Redux to avoid running out of blue, especially those who take the 3 leadership toggles and/or Tough and Weave. I didn't get my Claws/SR scrapper's end usage under control until the late 30s - tough, weave, the three /SR defensive toggles and a non-stop attack chain meant she burned through End like a maniac, and that was with Stamina.
  16. I recall reading somewhere in the forums that most of the music and a lot of the sounds are stock, which explains why they show up elsewhere. The high pitched shriek that accompanies costume changes in the GR launch trailer, for example, is the same sound made by a particular enemy type in Duke Nukem 3D.

Better yet, the first time I saw one of the trailers for a Certain Other superhero game I was reminded of the Rikti War Zone
  17. The only sound I've silenced so far is the female Provoke "Ah HA!"

I like most of the sound effects, especially the new ambient sounds in the zones, and the growls and snarls of the ghouls, which are everything the Arachnids should have been.
  18. "When I joined the Phalanx the first thing Statesman said to me was 'R U Healor?'"

    A Short PUG Play

    Brilliant work, Steelclaw.

I still think The Wretch Strike Force is your best, but this is a close second.
  20. Vahzilok would be my pick for the toughest enemy group. Multiple toxic hits, stacked slows and exploding zombies can turn any fight into a team wipe very fast if you're unlucky.

Was it Castle or one of the other devs who said a while back they'd like to expand the level range of the Vazhilok? The thought of those guys getting a GR style upgrade is simultaneously interesting and a bit scary.

Most of my other nominations are AT specific, like Scrapyarders, who seem to exist solely to remind Masterminds that they're not invincible after all.

Honorable mention to the Spectral Pirates. To the best of my knowledge the only arc you fight them in is An Arachnos Ghost Story, but they have nasty dark attacks which few characters will have resistance to, sword attacks that debuff your defence, and they fly, rendering knockback and slows like caltrops and tar patch useless.

    I19 Wish List??

    1. The ability to start TFs/SFs with one player, with the AVs scaling down to EBs if done solo. Nerf the merit rewards for soloing into the ground if it's necessary to balance risk to reward.

In no particular order after that...

The start of Hollows/Faultline style revamps for the hazard zones - let's have real reasons to go to them.
Red/Blueside story arc revamps - start with the 30-40 range.
Branching storylines/moral choices retrofitted into existing arcs - the patron arcs would be a nice place to start.
  22. Legree, the Praetorian evil(er) twin of my Mastermind, is a Dual Pistols/Kinetics Corruptor. Nova Praetoria was fun, but the second half of Imperial City (lvls 12-15 or so) has been painful.

Like the OP I feel that some of the DP animations take forever to execute and do below average damage. Then there's /Kin, which is quite good for soloists compared with some of the other sets, but is entirely single target, which doesn't help when 3 +1 ghouls or resistance fighters are charging me.

Regardless, I will not abandon or reroll the alter ego of my main. One day she'll be awesome... I hope.
  23. Power Loyalists - "Dirty Laundry", Don Henley
  24. I see the reasoning behind not spending time adding to vet-reward costume pieces, but I'd make an exception for trenchcoats, since they are a) very commonly used, even by enemy groups now, and b) as the 3 month reward they're not exactly hard to get.

It's not the same choice. The cirumstances are very different. The difference is that when you confront DeVore you're on your own. When you confront Cleo you're with Washington, who will not be talked around into letting her go.

Besides, why would she 'go' anywhere? Cleo is in tight with Praetor White. That's a pretty good place for a Resistance spy to be. Hypothetically, if you were the only one who knew that and you were alone when you went to see her and you gave her the choice to run she'd probably kill you to protect her cover. She's already tried to kill you once. Why wouldn't she do so again?

Or maybe you fight her, defeat her and spare her on the condition that she flees to the Underground. Yeah, right. 5 seconds after you walk out of that office she's on the phone to Praetor White telling him that you are a resistance agent who just attacked her. Who's he going to believe?
