I'm actually amazed this series kept on going, considering how bad some of it has been. Despite some shortcomings, the first movie is quite excellent. I could hope the reboot would capitalize on the movie and some of the strengths of the show, without having any of the many weaknesses the series has revealed.
If the reboot is going to work, they have to go with the less is more mantra. They don't need to explain everything, and usually make things worse than they do. The main thing they need is an interesting main for MacLeod and a good villain. If the characters are good, you don't need everything explained.
It's possible that this could be a good movie, but I'm not holding my breath. Hollywood today with a movie like this... is generally not good. They want to CGI it up and have some good fight scenes, but guys duking it out with swords is not the only thing that makes Highlander great (although it's certainly part of the fun). It's the world, the atmosphere, it's the quiet (and not so quiet scenes) examining morality, love, and loss.
After watching things like the Star Trek reboot, I'm certain that a decent set of hands can make it look good... for the substance part of things, I'm not so sure. -
3D also has a tendency to make the picture dimmer, which quite a few people grouse about. Avatar worked well for 3D, and it did add some feel to the movie, but I do have to wonder how much it was really needed even there. *shrugs* It was mostly a "oh look, there's ash floating in the air" feel than anything... in the actual action, I was more focused on the 2D (if there was any 3D at those times... I honestly don't recall seeing it).
It can add some atmosphere, I guess, but I honestly have to wonder how much it's adding that can't already be done with a good director, film crew, etc. -
Ummmm, TMI, sir, TMI. What happens in real life, stays in real life.
Heh, I was just letting you know I was running another. We'll see what interest is like at the time. I'm wanting to run another TF of some sort that night as well, working on getting my Peacebringer his alpha stuff. -
To be fair, these new powers are blurring lines between the ATs enough that it almost might not matter who you bring for a lot of things. I don't see judgement completely changing boss fights, but ambushes etc., are another thing.
I have seen posts from people that these powers are almost trivializing some things in the incarnate trials, so I do wonder where this is all going. Maybe some AT mods need to be applied to the incarnate powers (new ones, just for those), or the powers need to be toned down... or there are some scary things planned for future encounters to justify all our power. -
Quote:I did say it was for sake of completeness. And unless you're going to discount every set that has a nuke that is PBAOE, you're going to limit your options a lot. Heck, one of the sets with a ranged nuke I would say is not as great for someone who wants to stay at range: electric does better when paired with a tough melee set and when it gets in close. I would say Archery, Energy, AR, and Dual Pistols all would work for a ranged character. You're mostly looking for flavor at that point.Except it has no snipe. And a PBAoE nuke. It can be made into a good set, but not for someone who wants huge range, and an actual snipe power to specialize in.
Mortimer, when you team with a Kheldian character, your team gets a flag the game notices, saying there is a Kheld on the team... so those kheld specific villains will keep spawning when the kheldian leaves. You have to all leave the team and reform it to get rid of the flag. I would have though being solo on your own would do that, but apparently not. Although... if the mission was set or something when he was still on the team, the flag might not have been removed because of that. -
Didn't see you on last night when I was forming, but sorry if I missed you. I'm going to run another one on Monday night with my blaster (8 PM Eastern/7 PM Central) if you'll be around then. Or anyone else for that matter.
We had a nice, quick run last night... think we were well under an hour. I forgot to check the time yet again to be sure, though. Heh. I do hate the hunt part of Numina, that's for sure. They could easily have come up with an interesting mission or two to bring these mobs together (or most of them), and that would have been far more fun to play through... and not victim to zone invasions, either. -
Quote:Really reminds me of The War of the Roses or something like that. It was an interesting approach for a fantasy book, since some of them only dabble (or ignore) political intrigue. I'm not usually as interested in that, but I did see how people would like that.Just started the first book reread... aghast at the terrible things that occur right off even though (or perhaps because) I know it gets worse... and remembering just how much I like Tyrion.
What was the father's name from the northern kingdom again? I do recall being surprised at what happened to him, as Martin did seem to be setting him up as a major character. Quite sneaky, that move. -
Je Saist had a good idea with suggesting the Cardiac slot as well. Might not work for other things you want for your blaster, but it will let you up the range on all your attacks, albeit only when you're 50 (maybe down to 45, if I'm reading some of the I20 stuff right... but I might be confuzzled there).
I know you're already going with Archery, but for sake of completeness, Dual Pistols isn't horrible for a sniping idea, either. Piercing rounds is cone, so you can up its range with enhancments, and it doesn't have an interrupt time (not technically a snipe). Bullet rain is also a targeted aoe with a long range, so it can work okay, especially paired with EM. -
Yup, you read it. I know it's the WST and I'll probably/hopefully will find people in droves when I want to start this. However, I'd rather have a good head start on a group so I can start this ASAP after tonight's first Hami raid. So that means we'll start forming around 8:30 or 8:40, depending on when that first raid starts up.
If you've been wanting to get this in and want a solid start after Hami, shout out here. I'll fill as needed, but hopefully we can have a few from here on the forums.
1. Grey Pilgrim (Blaster or Scrapper) -
*rolls eyes* Please, son. Even if a particular writer's style ain't your cup of tea (or movie or band, etc.), you still have to give props to where it's due.
I don't particularly care for Martin's approach with his books (there was some weird stuff, to my mind), but I did note the first one was an interesting and different approach for a fantasy series. I can understand how people like them.
Quote:Quality, son. Not quantity. Most of those writers are hacks. Entertaining hacks but hacks non the less. While I hesitate to call GRRM a great writer he is considerably better than those above that are cranking out book after book every year for each of their franchises.
Quote:I haven't read anything in any of the books that I'd define as "unnecessary". After all, it's Martin's story to tell, not mine.
Sure, it's Martin's story to tell. But that doesn't mean he's above criticism about how he write that story. Not meaning to come down on this too much, it's just a pet peeve of mine after many years of hearing people talk about how their style is above criticism. Aesthetics is always an area of much debate, both for and against artists of all stripes and caliber. You do have to make sure you're in the realm of aesthetics and not simple clarity or unity of writing. -
Joe, you're not alone. Peacebringers have issues that make them weaker than Warshades by the numbers, perhaps, but they're not too far behind in terms of performance. And I'll take their bright light and funky powers over those soul-sucking Warshades any day.
They say they're reformed and all, but I can't help but feel evil on my Warshade.I keep trying to get back on my Warshade, but he's still sitting at 20. I'll get him going again eventually, but I like my Peacebringer more than him, that's for sure.

Quote:You should be able to mire safely off of those AVs... neither fire off their AOEs so fast that you can't flit in there. Just wait for them to use their aoe and then go in. Easy enough.Which does point to a reason to make and bring a PB along, for scenarios where the main issue is going to be hard targets (AVs, etc.). I've been on two TFs with my WS that failed in fact (1 STF, 1 Khan), because at the final AV fight I was basically just a Nova Form blaster, and the team still couldn't muster the dps/debuff combination to take down the final AV. Too dangerous to Mire frequently, and its not much of a buff on 1 or 2 targets, fluffies wore off. . .
Though really, the call is just whatever character you want to play. That's the way it always is: there is no needed AT (even if you feel like one tanky character on those TFs). -
Quote:Why, pistols, what have you done to total focus? *shouts loud enough to be heard off planet* PISTOOOOOOOOOOLS!"So, is Total Focus worth arguing about Pistols? No. I'm going to respec out of TF so I don't have to hear about Pistols. It's too bad because I love Total Focus.
To be fair, though, Miladys does this all the time, and I've said pretty much the same thing Strato is here, only in other threads. I was going to comment on his statement that HoB can't clear spawns, as my Pistols Blaster is able to do that with Fiery Ammo and Build Up. Yes, sometimes it misses, or there is a lieutenant (or even minion) still standing with some health. It does have those random ticks. It quite often clears spawns, however, so I'm not sure where he is getting his comment from.
And if it needs another attack to clear out a lieutenant, oh well. My archer and assault rifle blasters need more attacks as well: even when using build up or aim.
Sorry to derail further after joking about it, but it has been happening a lot. -
I'm not a huge redside player myself, but I thought it would be good to spread out the event at least a little.
My Peacebringer is all set for Saturday: I'll make sure he's wearing the toga. -
As I understand it, we can still form teams for these events, or at least plan things out and adjust as needed. So if you don't want to lead, you can shift leadership, correct? So I don't really find too much to worry about there.
I'm sure there will be some kinks in the system, but just adjust with them and figure out what works best. We'll get there. -
I do rather wonder what kind of system reviewers have been using lately, as CoH really is not showing its age. Its old settings were pretty decent maxed out, and things were really upped with GR... we have a lot more shadows, textures, etc. It's almost like they're playing without Ultra mode on or something.
Sure, we're not the next bleeding edge FPS, but an MMO should not go for that, in my opinion (or any game... I prefer a unique style, myself). "Showing its age" is not accurate at all... I rather wish our devs would have called the last two interviewers on this more.
I have no clue what his turn based action comment was about either... is there an MMO that even uses turn based combat? That's mostly strategy games and some RPGs... unless he's using the term differently than I have heard it used before. I would say that CoH has its shortcomings with some action elements, but its powers system is quite good... from what I can see and hear of other new games, our system works much better still. -
Getting to 22 makes a difference on every character. SO levels of enhancement make a huge difference, as they are intended to. I always remind people of that when they're in the late teens, heh.

Adjust the recharge on Photon Seekers and I wouldn't care at all. As it is, the situation basically screams that Photon Seekers have far too long of a recharge for what they do.
Even if most Warshades aren't going to be at the recharge cap, 2-3 at a time is not unreasonable to assume, and that's a lot more damage than what Photon Seekers does. They're fun and all, but there is no way you can look at the numbers and performance and say that's okay. -
-
Youm, just join back in when you get the chance. No need to "drop out." You'll be able to catch up and tag along.
Hehe, just kidding, you'd add plenty. So come back when you can. -
Sweet. I was just about to suggest doing this redside every other week, or at least once a month. My Stalker is totally in and ready to help drop the yellows ASAP.
Wish I had known about the Toga theme sooner. Spring Fling is done today, and my one character with Togas unlocked is on another server now.Do Centurion outfits count?
*added*
Wait. Forgot my Peacebringer has a Toga outfit, AND he is working on his Alpha still. I'm good. Might be worth finding out about centurion stuff for everyone else, though. -
Being a Blaster is usually more about burst damage than DPS as well. If you're solo, leaping past (or knocking back a target) and landing one big hit is better and safer for you: I do this all the time on bosses and EBs. In fact, I find myself missing it on the EM Blasters I have that did not take it.
The faster attacks are nice and I would recommend them (and use them more often), but Total Focus has plenty of use for me. -
The main thing that is problematic is their recharge. What they do is not justified by that recharge level.
Any AI behavior things, you can work around. You can summon them in a middle of a mob (or while flying above them) and they work just fine. You can also activate them from afar, go into Nova, and enjoy watching them go after targets that get mad at you.
The former maximizes damage and chaos in a small space. If you prefer the latter, you'll have to be okay with them going for random targets, like a minion over a boss. That's no different from using any pet, though. -
People are saying some of the new incarnate powers will not work in forms, alas. I'm not a beta person, so I have no way of confirming this, but I'm assuming the confirmation of this is not a lie.
If this is true, it's not too terrible, but I'm not super happy. Interface presumably will work in forms, as it's an auto power. Going to human to summon a pet, I can deal with. I'm less happy if we can't use Judgement or Destiny in forms, however. I can live without summoning a pet in the middle of a tough encounter... but I would assume we are supposed to be able to use Judgement or Destiny on the fly, and a "no forms allowed" requirement on those would be a real bummer.
Anyone playing around in beta and on a Kheld able to confirm how things work? -
Sean Bean is looking to kick your behind, Zombie Man. Look out!
