Quote:I can't recall the source at the moment, but I recall a comment related to this. It was something along the lines of that's how they tried it at first... but then they found that people had a hard time finding enemies for hunt missions or street sweeping. So, there was a conflict between realism and ease of gameplay... and the end result was putting more spawns in the streets. Or something like that, it's only a vague recollection.I'd like to see a slightly more realisitc approach, and move the villains off the big, open streets and stuff, sometimes within spitting distance of Longbow and PPD.
Instead, move them to the alleys between buildings, parking lots, slightly more run down areas, places criminals lurk.
Still, that was then, and this is now. It might be time to re-examine things. It was mentioned in the Herocon Panel that gave the ultramode demo that the Praetorian Clockwork only mess with you if you mess with them... I think that would be a great technology to bring to some of the other spawns as well (assuming it's actually new AI and not just making their aggro distance really really small, like with leaderless Vahz Zombies). For some of the outdoor spawns, anyway.
So, for example, you have your gang members in the back alleys and dark corners of the city. They're the ones doing the illegal stuff. Mugging people, trying to break into buildings, beating up innocents, etc.., and they'll react the same way they do now. They're doing something wrong, and they know it. If they notice you, they'll attack.
But the ones on the street act differently. They shouldn't do the overt crimes... if any. They just loiter around, talk to their girlfriends, maybe get a bit rowdy and yell at people passing by... but nothing that would really make a person stop and think "This is WRONG! I should stop them!". Their only real crime is wearing gang colors. So, they won't attack you unless you attack them first. If they can get away with standing around, they don't wanna start any trouble. Plus, gives good space for a few new lines about how the heroes in this city go around shooting fire at people who's only crime is standing around.
That's how I'd do it, anyway. Not sure how feasible it is to go back and redo the old spawns like that, though. -
Saw some people talking about a Hamidon Raid a little while ago. One person asked if there was still room, and the reply was no, and that there were already people waiting outside to get in. That got me thinking... we have a queue system for the servers (although I don't think it's ever actually been used on the live servers, and when it was used on Test it was kinda infuriating)... so why not a Zone Queue?
Zones have a cap, and when that is reached, a new zone is created (The Abyss 2, etc..). But in some cases you might not WANT to go to the next one on the list, because there's something going on in one of the ones that's full (Hami Raids and Ship Raids are the prime example of this). But in order to wait for a spot to open, you have to keep trying to get in, closing the window, and trying again until someone finally drops. And if you're competing with other people to get in, it's a matter of luck and timing.
My suggestion is to allow people to sit in a queue when a zone is full, and let them zone in when a spot opens up. This means that they won't need to keep refreshing the zone window looking for a spot, and it becomes "first come, first serve" rather than pure luck.
As an added bonus, make it so that the game will hold your place in the queue for a reasonable amount of time (3 minutes? 5? I'm not sure) if you crash or time out. If you're already in the zone, it will reserve your spot there for the same amount of time. -
Beating up grey enemies for badges. Or sometimes just beating up greys for no particular reason... but if there's a badge involved, then I just love it all the more. Killing one or a couple in a single shot, have the rest just look at me in a moment of pure terror, and then scatter every which way in a vain attempt to live. Some may try to take a shot or two at me, before realizing it's useless. I cackle maniacally, and hunt each one down in my own sick, twisted little game.
So much fun. -
When I was in college, I decided I needed to form an addiction, so it was either this or drugs. I think I went with the more cost effective solution, here.
Not gonna add it all up, but I know it's a fairly high number (although I'd have to remember what I payed for and what I got for free)... but then divided over 5+ years, it's not really that bad. -
I noticed when you got the "site down" thing it sent you to a new URL for that page. So just refreshing that constantly would be refreshing the site down page, not the store page. ...assuming that's what you were doing.
-
There are a handful of other changes as well. Plus, letting people who don't frequent Test (or the forums in general) know what's up is always a good thing. With that said, they're usually a bit slow on the patch notes... so they'll be up eventually.
-
If the contract allows Cryptic to sell or pull away the Cryptic engine and cause the demise of CoH as a result, then NCSoft's lawyers need to be fired.
-
Closed beta isn't up yet, either side. Unlike Live, the Test server doesn't have a set update time. It can update when the devs get to work, or right as they're heading home, if they want. They'll probably put it on Test after they'd made sure that DP is working fine on Live and they don't need to make any emergency patches.
-
I expect the patch tomorrow (since they said i17 beta is starting then, that's pretty much their launch window, I'd imagine). Then, they'll probably put the store page up at the same time, since the more time they have between now and the start of double XP for people to prepurchase and for any store problems to be worked out, the better.
If they decided to wait until Thursday morning and force a rush of thousands of people trying to buy at the same time (since they "NEED" their Dual Pistols character for the event), I can only imagine disaster.
If they started it Tuesday, then people will have the option to wait until Wednesday or Thursday, when the initial rush has died down and the stores are a bit more stable.
So... it only makes sense to me to have the patch and store update at the same time. But then again, Marketing probably has a hand in this, and why have THEY ever been logical? -
It would still probably be the easiest Master badge yet. I don't think that I've ever actually seen a situation where the core needs to be healed, except for if the entire team wipes or something (in which case, challenge over anyway). In order to get to that point without deaths, you'd probably need to have everyone go afk in another room.
Also worth noting, the Statesman Taskforce steals the last mission from the Villain respec trial for one of it's missions. So, the Master of Statesman pretty much already included the Master of Treespec Trial. So I can only imagine that a Master Respec badge would be silly easy redside as well.
If we're talking about actually making them challenging... how about requiring the "minions buffed" and "players debuffed" challenges? That might actually be enough to cause a risk of death, and make it worth having a badge tied to it. -
Having severely time limited events at the time of year where many people are most likely to be visiting relatives (or having relatives visiting them) and thus have limited playing time, if any at all, is probably not the best idea.

As an alternate mechanic... you keep all your inf, but it is grayed out. You have to "re-earn it". However, during this period, you earn inf at a dramatically increased about (10x? More? Would have to be worked out in testing) until you get it all back. You don't earn any "new" inf at this rate, just get access to your old inf.
You keep it, but you have to earn the right to use it. Those that have horded a huge amount and plan to transfer it over have to REALLY work for it. -
Just as a quick reply, ignoring all the argument... I'm all for the OP suggestion. It's usually pretty frustrating trying to complete recipes, since usually the last bit of salvage I need is common, and the market is (at times) completely useless for that. Having a consistent way of getting commons (as we do for uncommons and rares) would be a major improvement. And might actually fix some of the market problems too (though I kinda doubt it).
Why the heck are Commons harder to get than Uncommons and Rares in the first place, anyway? -
More speculation:
The new foe really is an alternate universe version of our characters. However, they are not Praetorian... they're only pretending to be.
This alternate Earth is one where the Internet has replaced all other forms of entertainment and communication. No TV, no phones, nothing but the Internet. As a result, society has shifted in a horrible direction... where nearly the entire human race has become nothing more than a bunch of Net Trolls.
These trolls come to Primal Earth, and attack us while pretending to be from Praetorian Earth. Their goal is to get us to counter attack (hence the events of Going Rogue) and cause a massive (flame) war. But why? What are their goals? Do they have some Nemesis-like master plan? Do they intend to let us fight it out and then destroy both Primal and Praetorian Earths while we're at our weakest.
No. Nothing that grand.
They did it for the lulz. -
Just the break away from the usual speculation...
The new foe is The Battalion, which was mentioned a long time ago as a very powerful group that we'd need the Invention System to fight (If I remember correctly). Hence the comment about them being able to match us blow for blow. Also the reason for the Craftable Temp Powers getting an overhaul.
They haven't made it to Earth yet, they've just been able to send scouts (or maybe just reflections of themselves) using the "Dark Mirror" (an actual thing, rather than a concept or system). The story arcs will involve finding and destroying this object/deepspace portal/whatever to stop the scouts from coming through.
This is a prelude to The Coming Storm, rather than a prelude to GR. -
Positron made a post which can help point to what video card can do what. Though you don't need to despair if you're just under the line for what he says is the minimum card, since that's for enabling ALL the features on minimum settings. You still may be able to use SOME of them, even with a weaker card. (Or maybe not). So, that post is a good place to start if you're thinking of updating your video card.
Other than that, we don't really know much about the technical requirements (other than what your computer has to be to run the game awesomely, today). If you're unsure about whether you want to upgrade or not, you can always just wait until i17 goes into beta, and check it out then.
Something else worth mentioning. Radeon cards are indeed problematic with CoH... at the present. However, the Ultra Mode demo they did at HeroCon was running on a Radeon card. So, it's a good bet that they've taken care of some of those problems. So even if someone's card isn't quite up to speed for Ultra Mode, if they have a Radeon card they still might see some benefit from the update. -
Quote:It's not so much a ripoff of the Justice Lords as it is a common cliche. The whole parallel world where the heroes are the bad guys have been done many, MANY times. The Justice Lords is far from the first, and if we were to consider it in such simple terms, they're surely just a ripoff of something else that came before them. (also, the Praetorians were introduced in the game with issue 1. They're only being fleshed out in Going Rogue). Why not expand the cannon-- add something new to the game.
As far as your remakrs about "copying", obviously the COX team doesn't have a problem with that. The whole "Going Rogue" expansion is basically ripping off of the "Destiny's Hand" arc on JLA or the Justice Lords episodes of the TV series. Marvel also did a similar thing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justice_Lords
So lets not act like ripping off an idea from another comic IP is a bad thing.
There may be some homage in there, but it is far from a ripoff. -
Quote:Don't forget the Blood of the Black Stream, which were mentioned as an Epic AT, and had one or two ingame references... and not much else.we already have 3 EAT's that never happened anyhow.
Incarnates (only in lore)
Coralax (only as a enemy group redside)
Avilans/Avians - i cant remeber how it was spelled as it only made it to the planning stages.
so if you want Color coded Lanterns go wait for DCUO.
City of Heroes already has it's intergalactic peace keeping group, complete with rival opposition group.
they're called Kheldians.
Avilans, I believe. And that was canceled because their original purpose was to give access to the wings costume parts, which at the time the devs thought would only be possible with an entirely new AT (probably due to animations issues?). But eventually they worked out how to give wings to everyone, so that EAT was canned. (If I remember correctly)
Also, the Nictus EAT was at one point said to be coming to villains, as their answer to the Heroes' Kheldians. But they were scrapped in favor of the Arachnos soldiers. -
Quote:At most I think (hope) it would be an inf reduction rather than a complete loss (losing 25% of it rather than 100%, for example). Because personally, it makes sense to me that a highly popular hero suddenly turning evil will suddenly have more street cred on the other side than some nameless guy that does the same. If Superman goes evil, the entire world cowers. If some random dude who no one's heard of follows the same path... then who cares? If so, that might be another reason why we're getting the ability to mail Inf to alts in Issue 17.
... and the more I think about that, the more sense it makes. We can't mail Inf across the hero/villain divide, but we can send all our Inf to an alt before we make the transition.
Point being, it makes sense to me that at least some of that "street cred" can be transferred, even if not fully. And the only reason I can think of why it wouldn't is just as an inf sink mechanic... which would be useless, since people would just transfer all their inf to an alt before switching, if that were the case.
...Although, thinking about it, it might be neater if there was an inf cost (based on level) associated with switching sides, rather than just losing a percentage of what you have. Say, if you're doing some evil stuff as a hero, that doesn't AUTOMATICALLY give you access to the Rogue Isles... someone has to offer it to you. Give you the option to take the plunge, and change your loyalties. And if you do, you have to pay a set amount of inf to change sides, otherwise "a no-name like you isn't even worth the effort".
Doing it that way makes more sense to me... and would help prevent "accidental" side swaps, which is always good (especially if the devs tie some sort of reward to NOT switching sides). -
It really wouldn't be in the best interest of the devs. And probably not of the players either. Generally speaking, working with IPs you don't own is a real pain. The devs would be on a tight leash concerning anything they did with the characters, and that could bleed into other parts of the game (for instance, if the devs decided to buff power x, and DC decided they didn't like that because it could make Superman look weaker by comparison, it could cause problems... as an example). And while it MIGHT not be too bad... in general it'd be better for the devs to keep 100% control of the game (or as much as an MMO dev team can keep, anyway. )
So really... no. Bad idea. The losses FAR outweigh any possible gains that could be had from this. -
I definitely would like to see a fox tail. Not so much because I'd use it myself, but because I'm trying to convince a friend to get back into the game, and it would really help my argument against him.
-
Quote:Well, probably not that.I was wondering if the Dark Mirror system is going to be CoH/V's version of ChampO's Nemesis system.
As such: metaphor.
What my hope/rampant speculation is, is a shape-shifting group that takes the form what they're fighting (or what's around them). So, if you're fighting them, they might change into YOU and start using your powers. Or change into something else. ...It'd be pretty neat.
No idea what it may actually be other than my baseless idea, but my guess is new enemy group. -
A friend of mine currently has a really old computer, and only runs CoH on low. But he's been looking for an excuse to upgrade, and figured Ultra Mode will be reason enough. So when that's released, he's going to be making a new computer with some pretty beefy parts.
I think the shift from minimum settings to Ultra Mode settings may make his head explode. -
