Rumor: NCSoft banning CoH accounts for negative comments
They made a business decision, yes. How they handled it was, without a doubt, poor.
I didn't even know ArenaNet was on the box as I made my purchase online thru NCSofts store.
|
Side note: buying through the NCsoft store (at least now) takes you via the guildwars2 website, and yes, both the Ncsoft logo and arenanet logo are actually at the bottom of the page.
As far as I can tell, it was always this way. So I can see how you can easily make the association (because you wouldn't expect buying through the NCsoft store to take you to a different companies website)
I personally do not feel I was treated shabbily by NCSoft. They gave me a 90 day notice that CoH was shutting down...more than most MMOs get. They could have easily given a 30 day notice...just saying.
Loyal customers? Where were all these LOYAL customers a year ago..6 months ago?? Just like any funeral...people come out of the woodwork to praise the deceased when they couldn't be bothered 6 months ago or a year ago to give CoH a second thought. |

Sounds similar to buying games through Steam. Unless you actually *look* you wouldn't even know who half the games were by.

Just double checked what I remember clicking and clicking GW2 takes me to a page advertising GW2 and has the NCSoft logo big as day in the upper left corner and a buy GW2 button in the lower right. Clicking that takes me to the GW2 site where the digital downloads can be purchased. At the bottom of that page I see where the ArenaNet is located but I never scrolled down that far when I made my order.

If, however, you bought the game direct from the Guild Wars 2 website, you *wouldnt* necessarily know that NCsoft were behind the game. Well, not unless you decided to look at the bottom of the webpages.
I do believe that when Arenanet were tweeting about where to buy it, it was direct to their own website to either buy it, or for a list of retailers for the Collectors Edition. So far, i have not seen a single tweet directing people to the NCsoft page (and i went back to the start of August). Strangely enough, on the official Guild wars 2 facebook page, there is *no* link to the NCsoft store page... everything is direct to the Guild Wars site (which does make sense).
Not saying that it is a bad thing, but those who would be going via the NCsoft store page, are more than likely going to be those who already have an NCsoft account. I (rather surprisingly) now very rarely buy stuff from the publishers website unless it is the *only* place where I can get it (like stuff on Origin right now). Well, unless I buy hard copy (which I do prefer overall though), where I then go for the best retail deal I can find.

*Broken up is a synonym for gloatingly, condescendingly dismissive of those who actually liked the game, right? If not i'm probably using the wrong term.
Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...
8 year veteran and VIP here. I never left. I left other games, notably WoW, but my subscription here never wavered. Placing a blanket generalization that everyone in SaveCoH just happened to come back to post on the forums, etc. is grossly inaccurate. The same could be said in reverse for those defending NcSoft. But such is not the case.
Please show me where I generalized the SaveCoH group as people who came back to post on the forums. My generalization was towards freemiums/freebies hence the WHITE NAME comment...ya know..people who were not VIP/subbed at the time of the announcement. I honestly have no clue how many SaveCoHers were VIPs...if I had to guess I would say a large percentage WERE VIP.
Reading comprehension FTW - not once did I mention SaveCoH in my post regarding white names nor did the person to whom I was replying....

Anyways, I paid when I was playing... and when I wasn't playing, I wasn't paying. I was actually going to resub the day of the annoucement, but the announcement landed and billing had been stopped already. It would have been nice to be VIP level for the EU Player meet, in the end I barely played the game (thankfully due to other stuff happening), but not having a VIP account did contribute to that a *little* bit.
*shrugs* crap happens sometimes (although I think my GF has had more crap happen to her than most people here).
Anyways, not having a go at you Burnt Toast, hell, i believe that most white names here have a reason as to why they were not subbed at the time of announcement.
Awww you called me condescending..how cute. Yeah you did use the wrong term.
I have always said I loved CoH the game. CoH was the first MMO I ever played...and the only one I have played more than 2 weeks. My sub began in March 2005 and aside from 2 months after Issue 7 I have played/paid non-stop. I have yet to find/play an MMO I like 1/10th as much as I do CoH. I also state numerous times how I recognize that to me it's JUST a game. So No I am not some Anti CoH person..or someone who dabbled in the game here and there, but I am also not so blinded by grief that I can't see the reality of things. CoH was not my "home" it was a great MMO I played for 7+ years.
You can call me condescending, rude, etc... I call it being blunt and honest. I don't believe in sugar coating anything and have never wore rose tinted sunglasses.
Saying it poorly as well. ...
Well, personally i was continuously subscribed from less than a month after the game launched until the day NCsoft killed all subscriptions. So i might not be as loyal as you (hence not being as broken up* by the closing as you obviously are), but i was a somewhat loyal customer. *Broken up is a synonym for gloatingly, condescendingly dismissive of those who actually liked the game, right? If not i'm probably using the wrong term. |
A friend of mine likes to joke that the Catholic church is a hypocrisy when it comes to same sex marriage because all priests are "married" to Jesus.
Why is the whole point seem to be to bad mouth NCSoft? I thought the point was to try to convince them of something. Bad mouthing anyone or anything usually dont convince them to do anything but to dig in and stay the course. If a person was astore owner and they said that they are closing a store in an area and I want to convince them to stay open, I doubt bad mouthing them all over the town and throwing bricks through their window will all of a sudden make them think "Oh gee, they ARE a wonderful community. I think I will stay." No, they probably will try to close down and get out of dodge as fast as possible with as little words as possible. Gangster mafia tactics usually dont work these days in the corporate, unless you are the actual Mafia and have the power to actually back up the words and sometimes that is not guranteed success.

Hi there. Excuse my breaking into your pro-NC soliloquy, but you ain't seen nothing yet. People are just now getting ramped up; some of us are waiting to see if your besties at NC actually pull the plug on 11/30.
If they do - and they almost certainly will - what has went before will seem as nothing compared to the firestorm of sheer and utter hatred which will be unleashed upon their guilty little heads. Facebook. Twitter. Social media of all kinds. Its a gen-u-ine PR Nightmare, part 2. aND IF ITS all so very useless, 'scuse the caps, why do you even care. We're bound to fail, right?
You cannot stop it. Your opinion will mean nothing. Sorry, darlin'. You cannot save them.
Oh, we DO have the power to affect their bottom line. Believe it. This isn't like a negative review on Angie's List or something: this is people all over the world, united in outrage and making sure everyone knows who not to do business with.
When you do something bad, when you hurt people, word tends to get around. True for each one of us. True for corporations. Just ask Bank of America and Netflix, 'kay?
Have a nice day.
I'll take DELUSIONAL for $200 Alex.

Oh I know they manageed to insult and assign any one who dont agree with them as NCSoft employees, or worse. They probabaly managed to prove that NCSoft shouldnt bother taking them serious and just ingore them until they go away.
And after the fact of Nov. 30th. I havea feeling NCSoft will still ignore them. And what is this about outrage aroudn the world? Most people outside the gamign world never even heard of NCSOft and as Forbin said earlier, it's hard to care about a store, or game in this case, closing down when ya never even heard about it. In about a month or two after 11/30, it will be buisness as usual. NCsoft will still be around, COX will be dead, and some people of that type still will believe they are some PR nightmare to NCSoft. As I said earlier in a post, I think its more like a slight annoyance of a knat at a bbq.
This kind of remind of the matrix movie, part 2 I think. Except the line would be
"I am NCSoft. I created the COX. I've been waiting for you. You have many questions, and although the process has altered your consciousness, you remain irrevocably cuckoo. Ergo, some of my answers you will understand, and some of them you will not. Concordantly, while your delusion may be the most pertinent, you may or may not realize it is also the most irrelevant. Already I can see the chain reaction: the chemical precursors that signal the onset of an emotion, designed specifically to overwhelm logic and reason. An emotion that is already blinding you to the simple and obvious truth: COX is going to die and there is nothing you can do to stop it."

Fair enough... for me, i bought my copy from the Guild Wars 2 website directly, instead of via the NCsoft store page. Both end up on the same actual page though, so if you are already buying the game from the NCsoft site, you already know that NCsoft are linked to the game.

I think what we've seen while coming at this from two different directions is that the way things are set up it is easy for people to get confused about which "company" owns a given game, or if they are even seperate companies at all.
Re: the ArenaNet/NCsoft discussion...
I interviewed at ArenaNet about three weeks ago, and I brought up the closure of Paragon Studios. My question to the interviewing team was, "How do you know this won't happen to you? I mean, it WAS kind of abrupt, and it doesn't say much about job security."
I can't remember the exact wording, but if I recall correctly, while NCsoft owns the property of Guild Wars (and Guild Wars 2), they do NOT own ArenaNet. So while NCsoft could one day shut down Guild Wars, they can't close the studio - and ArenaNet has the option to buy the game (and presumably all it entails) away from NCsoft should it happen. How they'd raise the funds, I don't know, but I gather they've been in consistent contact with NCsoft about it as an option.
Unlike the case with Paragon, where NCsoft owned both, and shut them both down simultaneously.
(And no, I didn't get the job - I did manage a damn good interview, but they told me at the time I was more than overqualified for the job, and they wished they had a position where I could REALLY use my strengths. Oh, well.)

Enjoy your delusion. BofA and Netflix have tens of millions of accounts. The sheer number of people involved made for a great deal of noise.
Your 'firestorm' is going to come from a handful of individuals, all of whom are going to look like stereotypical Internet rage-nerds when the world finds out that you're protesting the closure of a video game. Go ahead and explain to the man-on-the-street how this was a 'bad' thing that 'hurt people.' I'll enjoy watching that.
It's a good thing you have no compunction about looking like a fool. Sounds like you'll be getting a good deal of practice.

ArenaNet - About Us
NCSoft IR, Q2 2012 earning releases - look on page 2 with the note on subsidiaries.
However they could operate with very little interference from their parent. Also as a full blown subsidiary they may be a lot more difficult to simply shutter than a development studio under the control of a subsidiary like Paragon was or they may have an out clause when they sold themselves to NCSoft.

Neither myself or anyone else said a thing about "taking this to the streets," do not be ridiculous. I also find it amazing that you and others evidently think that no one was made unhappy by this shutdown. I guess in Emotionally- Neutralville, all emotion looks like insanity. I can only wonder what you thought during the Save CoH demonstrations in Atlas; yes, how dare anyone stand up to a corporation. Those fools. Those delusional idiots.
If backlash is so meaningless, do tell why NCSoft is banning accounts over it. This should be good.
I consider an argument to be over when the other half trots out the ad-hominem insults; its like a non-Hitler version of Godwin's Law. You take today's prize, 'ave a nice day.
