  1. Goodnight Paragon, you were not meant to live the life of a MMO but to be the stuff of future memory.

The company realignment to slowly pull out of the West isn't even needed to justify it. "The product isn't selling, so we're choosing to stop." That would have been a simple honest business answer.
"We're closing down the non-CoH elements of Paragon Studios as CoH's revenues can't continue to support unrelated development." That would have been a more likely step (in my book) than axing everything, all at once, with no warning, if it was a profitability problem.

I'm pretty sure the next expansion continued with that client or at least whatever the one with paladins and necromancers was, I stopped playing during that one.

Wikipedia says support for the 3D client was dropped in 2007 and Third Dawn was released in 2001, so it existed for 5-6 years,

    *SPOILER*
    NCSoft is the Battalion.

If you have issues with the CoH run animation never move without a movement power in CO.

Since $500k is the only offer ever made to NCSoft I don't see how else this should be treated.

That'd kill Disney's interest for sure since it is just a slider and not sliders.

Oh wait, sorry, I meant to say NCSoft.

The pronoun "he" is male/neutral. The pronoun "she" is only female. So if you don't know the gender "he" was the default until rather recently.

edit: Sniped by the eccentric one.

Whatever it is I hope it engages better than D3.

Did the AP, bought a new computer for D3, got D3 installed on the shiny new laptop and within two weeks couldn't bring myself to open D3 anymore. I'm actually glad I did the AP instead of paying for it on top of my subscription as I really never stopped playing WoW for any length of time I would've even thought of unsubbing for.

Just trying to re-rail the thread while railing against the "modern" trends in MMOs.

While WoW is still kicking I think it's folly to do a WoW clone *and* expect WoW numbers. Actually, it's folly to expect WoW numbers for anything that isn't WoW until the one true WoW-killer draws the sword from the stone and goes all vorpal on Go'el.

PvP. PvP is cool and since PvP is why we can't have nice things...

The solo path has to suck enough to overcome the I-can't-stand-to-be-alones' charming personalities so by comparison it is more painful to solo than team.

Special Unique Snowflake SYndrome. SUSSY is a common condition of raiders. If you don't have raids you're not cool and won't attract raiders and if the raiders can't have gear no one else can have you won't retain the raiders.

That's why my favorite slots were Alpha and Interface, they didn't really step on anyone else's toes (the way Interface stacked made sure of that).

Judgement and Destiny were normal game wreckers and really shouldn't have been allowed out of iContent. I never got into Masterminds so I don't know how they felt about Lore.

Making a pitiful amount of extra inf wasn't worth the hassle of finding a vendor let alone the "right" vendor. And don't get me started on people that would "have" to go hit the vendor to sell enhancements while doing missions. People buying them after catastrophic enhancement failure was bad enough (generic IOs exist for a reason people).

With Ouro, super sidekicking, and TFs exemping you to the proper level hitting the level cap in CoH meant it wasn't a decision between the two R's, raid or retirement, unlike basically every other MMO with levels.

As similar as CO is to CoH, it really feels lacking with no Arcanaville to dissect and explain the powers and mechanics.

I mean, you can no longer create GAME accounts, so this must be a pre-existing account that never signed up on the forums.
There are probably a few other fans left out there.
  18. If they got the band back together and said they were transitioning Paragon Studios and CoH to be a separate entity from NCSoft, perhaps.

If it was just NCSoft not turning the servers off, considering that the diaspora has already happened and the devs that made CoH what it was (for good or ill) wouldn't be involved and that I'd be rewarding NCSoft with more money for their little accounting scheme, no.
  19. When someone says "this game is so awesome! look at the photo realistic graphics!" and when asked about the game play respond "but look at the photo realistic graphics" sums I what I don't like about the current (big title) game development trends.

Complaining about graphics on a classic is like complaining about the font on a first edition book.

(For the record, I prefer the DS over the PSP (though I really appreciate the PSP for its catalog of nigh-impossible to get PS1 games), the Vita hasn't interested me at all and I have a 3DSXL. Not having a way to legally get my UMD games onto a Vita might have a bit to do with it.)
  20. PvP in a PvE MMO usually boils down to "PvP is why we can't have nice things".

Why PvP is "popular" in games with gear differences (CoH, WoW) is beyond me. Nothing says skill like globalling a fresh 90 in greens with your more-purple-than-barney character.

Does your character have kids? name the kids..
Power origin.. Science.. Experiement, exposure. Accidental, purposeful..
ect... Each would make the character being able to fit into the world more, perhaps certain missions only trigger if you had were accidentally exposed to some thing that gave you your powers. The people kidnapped could be one of the people listed.. failure to save them could lead to the death of that family member or cause a rift between you as some other hero saved them when you couldn't.
The problem I have with that is that you'd be creating additional characters whose sole purpose is to suffer for the sake of your hero.

In PnP games, the more likely the GM is to stuff one of my NPCs into a fridge the less NPCs I give them and the ones I do have little importance so when they invariably are put in a situation in which they wish for the sweet mercy of death (again) and are denied it (again) and suffer a fate worse than death (again), *I* don't feel so bad about having created that character.

Before the SSAs and their darkity dark dark grim darkness, I'd have been leery about it, after it, all my characters would have been loner orphans who never knew their parents so when a writer decides to be "edgy" and kill $Significant_Other off in a gruesome way just to show evil $Villain_of_the_Week is, well, there wouldn't be one.

The sit for ten minutes reading your spellbook to get enough mana to cast enough spells to kill another mob was something that should have stayed in EQ.

Staff Fighting and its Form of Soul made even a brute's damage aura sustainable before SOs. Even WoW has jumped mana regen up to absurdly fast levels for low level characters. Sitting around and resting might be realistic but it sure isn't fun. Especially when you have a cooldown on rest. And when you have the fewest slots but only had access to the weakest enhancements it was double unfun.

    3. The whole "items and money" side of the game was implemented very badly. New players always started out dirt poor, unable to afford SOs without some kind of market activity, gifts, or TF action -- as if being new wasn't enough of a handicap to building a viable character.
I read it was part of Jack's vision that players would trade unusable enhancements amongst themselves and that was one of the reasons why you weren't supposed to be able to keep up with normal gameplay. Once we had people with multiples of the influence cap they probably could've brought the cost of SOs to be more in line with what you'd generate through normal play (or vice versa) and not the AH.
  24. You better pop some inspirations if you aren't capped for fire resist.

Looking at some of the articles there WildStar looks a lot like WoW for something that's supposed to have a distinctive look.

Sure, it's in space, but WoW has Space Goats and Space Orcs, and Gnomish and Goblin tech, Dwarven tanks and Outland is basically its space expansion.

As long as they don't make the mistake of trying to out-WoW WoW and they get themselves out from under NCSoft they might be able to last.
