Your Final Mission

Like most of us, I was hit pretty hard by news of the game closing. I've been trying to wrap my head around it for the past month, and getting nowhere really. The past few weeks, I decided to deal with it the best way I could; by making an AE arc designed to give closure to the game's diehard players.

Your Final Mission, #554396 by @Interface

You take the role of a longtime hero, summoned by the Well of the Furies to deal with the end of the world, the Coming Storm. Since most of us will want to play it on their main, it has EBs, or AVs depending or your setting. Still, despite being 5 missions, it should be easily beatable within 15 minutes. READ ALL THE CLUES, that's where the story is told.

In particular, the arc lets you choose the path of a hero or a vigilante. In the first three missions, check your clues after the mission ends. You have a choice to make before leaving.

Any and all feedback is welcome, here or ingame.

Thanks to everyone who fought by my side for the past 8 years!

I am going to run your AE arc, Interface. I'll come back and tell you what I thought!

You know, looking back I think I did rely on smilies too much. I'm a really, really awful typist, so all my characters had keys bound to :) and :(, which I used an average of 7 times per mission :)

If you're not VIP anymore, I guess you can't run the mission I made. If you're curious, let me know and I'll email you a summary.

Gratuitous threadbump. If you are one of the ones who have played this, please, drop me some feedback, I'd love to hear it.

Loved it. was able to run it fairly quickly, and I really liked the story told through the clues. I would recommend this arc to anyone who feels like they would love to live through the last days of their character.

Just finished the arc. It had a good ending I think. I will recommend it.

Just a quick note: There is a pretty good typo in the last mission.

The clue says: Find the door in the READ of GIFT. I am assuming that should be Rear door.

Played it earlier today before heading off to work...
Good job on the choices offered between Hero and Vigilante.
The ending... was kinda mushy (for lack of a better word coming to mind) but not in a bad way... It made me smile, which is a rare thing these days as I play and I watch our beloved game come closer and closer to its final day...

Damnit... I got something in my eye again...

Pretty good story, well-told through the clues and briefings. The penultimate mission seemed to be setting me up for a Heroic Sacrifice, and I would have been fine with that... but instead, it ended in a way that was really heartwarming. It made me smile even as I blinked away tears. I really did want to team with those guys, and the one who said I inspired him was particularly touching (especially since, by pure coincidence, he had one of my powersets - see below).

Thank you.

(As a side note, the Batallion lived up to their rep. They seemed to take forever to put down, and the final boss put me down a couple of times before I finally turned the tables (emptying my insp tray in the process, and even pulling some from email storage). How much of that was resistance to energy, I wonder? [I was playing an FF/EnB 'fender.] Still, they're supposed to be really tough, so it works.)

Batallion EB was tough even for my incarnate scrapper. Got a lucky shot in past my SR defenses. Even though it wasn't necessary I cleared that last room.

Final mission set at lvl 13 made me plan out an optimal route to get the help I needed to win. Nicely done. Tom Anderson is now retired on Victory.

I will retire the heroes closest to my heart this way, then fight Rikti in the final week with my young heroes inspired to fight on by what past heroes have done. Then when it all goes black, I can believe they are still fighting the good fight in Paragon.

Heroes I will retire with this arc: Tom Anderson, Vilka Patri, The Human Swarm, Ludic Fallacy, Cayble, Jacob Deyer, and finally Phrendon Largo.

A big thanks to everyone who played and left comments. I never really participated in the community much, other than making a few comedy AE arcs a few years ago, so this makes a good final way of giving something back. I fixed a few typos based of feedback, thanks!

Yes the Battalion boss is tough. I though of him as CoH's ultimate final boss. Of course, I could always make him Mace/EA for a real challenge

That describes me, unfortunately. I'd like a copy of the summary at (EDIT: Message received, thanks! ), please. And don't none o' y'all go signing me up for Time-Life Book Club or anything.

I honestly teared up at the end. Perfect.

If this is indeed the Final Mission I ever play on the last day with my oldest toon created in Oct 2004, I could think of no better exit.

And no higher honor.

I think I was fine until the end when Ice Freem Man said -

Ice Freem Man: "Cyberman 8, glad to meet you! You're the reason I decided to become a hero!" And the end where the note says you join them on their low level team. And this all with the backdrop of the ORIGINAL Atlas Park map! The one where you can see the way it looked on opening day with the buildings over on the east side before they put in Wentworths and AE.

Don't get me wrong - the new Atlas is superior. But man... that took me back...

Damnit... Onion Cutting Ninjas sneaking in here again.

It's funny that the final souvenier mentions you becoming a trainer. I had no idea you were going there, but yet I got screenshots of the new heroes around me on Ms. Liberty's plinth.

The final souvenir is just awesome. I made sure to get a screenshot of it with the HUD visible so that I can read it in the screenshot.

Very nicely done, Interface! I highly recommend this to all CoH players. Especially ones like me who normally don't visit AE.

Although the City Hall offices almost broke my heart. Poor Azuria!

My greatest recommendation and request would be to recreate this on the Beta server so all players can have access.

Would you please post a transcript (also with screenshots and info descriptions, especially of your custom critters) here in this thread? It would be really nice to have the story here for those who for whatever reason can't enjoy it in AE.

PS Thanks for the idea of grabbing screenshots, Atlantea.

I had to have a screenie, too.
