Goodbye Paragon Studios. I've loved every minute!

Dear Everyone at Paragon Studios,

I'm not worried about refunds and what not. Even though I have invested a great deal of money in this game over the past eight years, it was well worth every penny. CoH has been an important part of my life for a very long time and it is with great sadness that I see NC Soft has suddenly announced they are shutting everything down.

I must confess, I find this decision quite confusing. According to the quarterly reports, CoH and Paragon Studios are still turning a healthy profit. Arbitrarily ending this enterprise seems on the surface to be a very bad business decision. Unless there is something the quarterlies aren't reporting, that is. Which is always possible.

It's been great fun and I will cherish the memory of this game for many years to come. There really is nothing like it in the market and I'm reasonably certain there never will be again.

Goodbye to everyone at Paragon Studios. You've done a great job and I for one, will always be grateful to have had the chance to experience your vision.

A touch premature there.

Negotiations are still ongoing.

The game has been removed from the public portion of the PlayNC website even though the "News" does not yet contain an official announcement. The "CoH News" does, but the main news feed does not. However, removing the game in favor of "Blade and Soul" indicates to me that NC Soft has already decided that CoH is going away and those resources will be moved to promoting and serving "Blade and Soul".

Superheroes have been supplanted by ninjas, it seems.

There are negotiations ongoing to cut CoH loose from NCsoft although it's not clear whether it would be as an independent studio or selling it to another publisher. Only those involved know for sure. It's still quite possible nothing will come of it, but still it's not quite dead yet. Pining a little, perhaps.

so long as an American company gets the rights and not another Korean company that cant understand the market.

even a British or Canadian company would be good.. though Maple-Leaf man or Tea-Time man might replace Statesman... and they would force us to use the Metric system *shudder*

As others said negotiations are still on going. From what's been said about them it seems the purpose of negotiations was never to have NCSoft flip the switch back on or reverse their decision, but to allow Paragon Studios to split from NCSoft and take the City of Heroes IP with them.

Yes, NCsoft will no longer have any involvement with CoH.

The negotiations are between a third party (or parties) to take control of the game IP and data.

And that is exactly what NCSoft would have to do anyway if they sell the game to a third party. Same with giving refunds and not offering credit to other NCSoft products.

This is actually good news when we consider that negotiations are still ongoing. Just like it's good that they haven't made everyone VIP's after announcing the shutdown. If there was no chance the game will be picked up and run by a new owner under the F2P business model they'd have made everyone VIP until Nov 30. The fact that they haven't is a good sign that they don't want to screw up the accounts when the game relaunches and wish to keep the accounts correctly flagged as Freem, Prem, and VIP.

"someone else" "someone else" "someone else"

You know, sometimes there is no one else. As I've suggested in another thread, maybe what we need is to find enough people to put up enough real money to buy the IP from NC Soft. In order to succeed, someone at Paragon Studios with genuine clout would have to organize it, but it can be done.

Instead of sitting around waiting for a hero we need to be heroes. All it takes is for someone at Paragon Studios with real clout to set up a private equity fund for the sole purpose of purchasing the entire IP and then inviting everyone with an interest in the game to invest as little or as much as they were willing to risk.

This is America. This is capitalism. This is how things are supposed to be done. This is exactly what separates us from a semi-socialist country like South Korea.

I can certainly risk $1000 to try and save City of Heroes. Some people can risk more, some people can risk less. If enough of us contribute, we can save the game ourselves.

All it will take is real leadership from someone at Paragon Studios.

That leadership is apparently in place. However, they almost certainly cannot publicly share details of what is being negotiated. So far, they have only let out that negotiations are still ongoing.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that such leadership is "all" it will take. A lot of other things have to fall into place - the best leader in the world might not be able to get NCSoft to play ball. But the leadership is in place, and "someone else" is indeed working on saving the game.

Nothing at all might come of it, but people are trying.

Yes, and those negotiations need us to keep making noise for ammunition. Remember to keep involved in save the game events.

Like this one: The first Positron's Ally event is tonight! Run the first TF, be Positron's ally!

Also consider sending NCsoft an e-mail urging them to sell the game if you haven't yet. They set up an e-mail just for us at COHSunset@ncsoft.com

Is it a black hole? I don't know! I sent one anyway.

Tell anyone who doesn't know about these. And the Titan Forum is also a good source of organization/stuff to do.

To elaborate: The leadership here at Paragon is, and always has been, top notch.

I can assure you that there is no lack of drive or passion from our leadership.

And anyone who knows anything about our dev staff knows just how true this statement is. #SaveCoH!

Edit: Wow, 8 years in this game, and my first FPARN. Well, this is as good a time as any, I 'spect.

It could also mean that NCsoft has begun the process of relinquishing all rights to CoH... The game can go on without NCsoft... Don't assume the worst until the new leadership makes a statement.

I think it would be very very helpful to know what the folks at or formerly with Paragon actually want to see happen.

Things have been very vague. In part this may be due to legal restrictions on those currently involved in negotiations, but I believe it is leading to a diffusion of energy in this community, having to guess... and worse, being allowed to dream.

Most of us in the City of Heroes player base are creative people (the nature of this game seems to have distilled that from the general market). Some even creative professionals. So we can empathize with anyone who spent years creating something facing the prospect of that work being effectively destroyed -- that's much worse than just losing a job.

And we assume that you want to save your baby.

The ideal resolution seems to be what Turbine did when Microsoft discontinued support of Asheron's Call. That not only saved the baby, it empowered the studio to remain together and move forward independently with other projects.

That is what I think many of us hope is being pursued. But is it?

Can anyone say anything?
