Have to admit it . . . GW2 may replace COH for me
I picked it up last night and played 3 hours straight tonight. I am honestly enjoying my tree-people elementalist just learning the game mechanics like dodge and cast times before I jump into pvp(the game auto levels you to 80 for that and it rewards xp for pve!). I only got to level 6 but I've killed a ton of what coh calls GMs and am loving the structure of teaming so far(something no mmo ever got right except coh IMO).
I truthfully wish coh could live forever but the fact that it is dying has given me the push to finally give it up for good. All these years I abandoned so many mmos because this game was comfortable and since the pvp revamp that feeling just got weaker and weaker until 8/31. If anyone wants to join me I'm on Blackgate server named Matriculated.(cool names are impossible to come by since they're global :/ ) Edit: also you guys need to be less butthurt, this game is 8 years old, get another hobby. NC is a business. Don't hate the player, hate the game. |

You know, the thing about insulting, condescending platitudes is that, as platitudes, they've been said many times before. Still, you do get credit for chaining more of them together than usual.

How about you get off your high horse? If people want to be upset because a company pulled the plug on a game they enjoy playing then that's their perogative. Don't like it? Don't read. And I HATE the saying "Don't the player, hate the game." Why should you NOT hate the people stooping to 'playing the game'? Especially when, in this case, the 'game' made little sense, aside from potentially making quarterly costs look more reasonable and maybe shifting that budget to another game.

Guys, don't feed the troll. Look at his "reason for editing:
He is intentionally trying to stir the pot. Let the troll die of boredom. |
In which case i'd have to add points.

Meanwhile: what is the deal with these next gen MMOs and global character names across all servers? TSW is the major offender here but GW isn't too far behind. Call me crazy but IMO it shouldn't take 50 tries to get an alias you're okay with possibly being stuck with for the next few years.

(more seriously, I hear you; despite logging on about 2h45m before the the servers were officially due to go online, I didn't get any of my preferred character names besides Biowraith - the ones that were already grabbed in the first 20 minutes are names I've successfully used in pretty much every other online game I've played, including ones I didn't play until a year or two after launch)

Oh, there's that wound salt I was looking for. Thanks OP!

I didn't think CO's charactername@globalname solution was a terrible elegant implementation of an otherwise great idea, but it's certainly better than this.

...unless there are 9,999 players that just so happen to want the exact same name that you do, but that seems impossible.

Also, why would anyone want to look you up after that? :P

Uh, I'm very sure you can get any name you want in GW2, because it will always give you a random 4 digit number after it, even if you are the only one named that.

The reason is WvWvW and guesting, yes, since they allow your character to play with/on other servers.

It doesn't help when some races don't use surnames or, even worse, don't use surnames and use punchy short names like Jeek! or Zinga. It can be practically impossible to find a 'culturally appropriate' name.

Precisely. Character names are global. What's the deal with that?
|
And the deal is guesting and WvWvW. Although I do think guesting has a lot more to do with it, since only the server needs to keep track of your name in WvWvW. When I'm in WvWvW, other characters all have the name [Name-of-Server Invader] (ie, I look like Tarnished Coast Invader and not Teanga Alainn when I WvW) and the server could easily call you by character-server-global strings. I'm not even sure why it couldn't internally keep track of the fact that Seven Of Cups (Tarnished Coast) was playing on Jade Quarry and runs into the Seven of Cups there. Then again, IANAP (programmer!)
And for what it's worth, I think it's more of a design than programming issue. That's the decision they took, fair enough, it's just a pain when I want my asura to blend in with the established asura naming convention.
(Also, I'm the guy who can spend an hour in CoH's chargen trying to come up with just the right name. Imagine how much worse that was before we got rename tokens )

Do yourself a favor, work your way to 5 and then post. At this point you should be working on a bucket list or have moved on like I have.
Or just call me a troll for not joining in the meta coh circle jerk that this save our city campaign has become.
Bumping this thread to remind people there are still games to be played no matter who makes them. There are some toxic trheads out there from people wishing ill to certain companies and thus wishing more people will lose their jobs. I can't stand by and see these people do this to others with doing something.
It isn't about wanting people to lose their jobs.
You're over simplifying matters.
It's all about taking the honorable position in the face of an action that is simply wrong.
Buying GW2 sends a message that you don't care how NCsoft has conducted themselves here.
