Have to admit it . . . GW2 may replace COH for me

I only got to level 6 but I've killed a ton of what coh calls GMs and am loving the structure of teaming so far(something no mmo ever got right except coh IMO).

I truthfully wish coh could live forever but the fact that it is dying has given me the push to finally give it up for good. All these years I abandoned so many mmos because this game was comfortable and since the pvp revamp that feeling just got weaker and weaker until 8/31.

If anyone wants to join me I'm on Blackgate server named Matriculated.(cool names are impossible to come by since they're global :/ )

How about you get off your high horse? If people want to be upset because a company pulled the plug on a game they enjoy playing then that's their perogative. Don't like it? Don't read. And I HATE the saying "Don't the player, hate the game." Why should you NOT hate the people stooping to 'playing the game'? Especially when, in this case, the 'game' made little sense, aside from potentially making quarterly costs look more reasonable and maybe shifting that budget to another game.

Point. It was just so inept and worn out that i was terribly disappointed. Unless he's one of those really meta types who is deliberately being pathetically bad at trolling in order to troll those with expectations of some skill when trolling.

In which case i'd have to add points.

You're just not being creative enough!

(more seriously, I hear you; despite logging on about 2h45m before the the servers were officially due to go online, I didn't get any of my preferred character names besides Biowraith - the ones that were already grabbed in the first 20 minutes are names I've successfully used in pretty much every other online game I've played, including ones I didn't play until a year or two after launch)

I guess the 'don't like it, don't read' argument can be made against you as well.

I am slowwwwly beginning to get over it. I am being positive today though - I am fairly certain nothing will revive the game and I am going to look at everything in a positive light, if it is saved or not.

I don't understand why GW2 is even doing that, since everything is tied to your global name, anyway. Heck, even WoW's solution was more elegant than forcing you to compete with a couple million other players for a name (I'm assuming the only reason for doing it this way is the WvW stuff). And it's only going to get worse.

I didn't think CO's charactername@globalname solution was a terrible elegant implementation of an otherwise great idea, but it's certainly better than this.

I think "guesting" too, if they ever get that implemented.

It could be. *Shrugs* I just had to tear into some one calling people 'butthurt' over being disappointed in the sudden cancelation.

Uh, I'm very sure you can get any name you want in GW2, because it will always give you a random 4 digit number after it, even if you are the only one named that.

...unless there are 9,999 players that just so happen to want the exact same name that you do, but that seems impossible.

Seriously? Stop being on the GW2 "side" in this thread. Just... go away, actually. You're making us look bad :P

Also, why would anyone want to look you up after that? :P

Surnames are the way to go. I was literally logged in 5 minutes after head start started (12 EST) and only got ONE of the 5 names I was gunning for without adjustment. MADNESS!

Um, wrong. You can get any global you want because they tag 4 digits on. Character names are server-wide exclusive. Since I got "Seven of Cups" on Tarnished Coast, no one else in the game can have it.

The reason is WvWvW and guesting, yes, since they allow your character to play with/on other servers.

Did you read what I quoted? He was directly talking about globals.

I think he's talking about character names, which also have to be globally unique. And while it's a lot easier to just smack random words together to get a passable fantasy name than, say, a "cool" modern nickname in TSW, it's still an issue (if only for the fact that GW2 has a lot more players around the world.)

It doesn't help when some races don't use surnames or, even worse, don't use surnames and use punchy short names like Jeek! or Zinga. It can be practically impossible to find a 'culturally appropriate' name.

^^^

And the deal is guesting and WvWvW. Although I do think guesting has a lot more to do with it, since only the server needs to keep track of your name in WvWvW. When I'm in WvWvW, other characters all have the name [Name-of-Server Invader] (ie, I look like Tarnished Coast Invader and not Teanga Alainn when I WvW) and the server could easily call you by character-server-global strings. I'm not even sure why it couldn't internally keep track of the fact that Seven Of Cups (Tarnished Coast) was playing on Jade Quarry and runs into the Seven of Cups there. Then again, IANAP (programmer!)

You are probably right about guesting. Since the feature isn't in yet, I hadn't considered that.

And for what it's worth, I think it's more of a design than programming issue. That's the decision they took, fair enough, it's just a pain when I want my asura to blend in with the established asura naming convention.

(Also, I'm the guy who can spend an hour in CoH's chargen trying to come up with just the right name. Imagine how much worse that was before we got rename tokens )

Do yourself a favor, work your way to 5 and then post. At this point you should be working on a bucket list or have moved on like I have.

Or just call me a troll for not joining in the meta coh circle jerk that this save our city campaign has become.

Bumping this thread to remind people there are still games to be played no matter who makes them. There are some toxic trheads out there from people wishing ill to certain companies and thus wishing more people will lose their jobs. I can't stand by and see these people do this to others with doing something.

It isn't about wanting people to lose their jobs.

You're over simplifying matters.

It's all about taking the honorable position in the face of an action that is simply wrong.

Buying GW2 sends a message that you don't care how NCsoft has conducted themselves here.

Yeah it's sad. I doubt the Paragon Studios gang wants this kind of reaction.
