I dunno, maybe I'm really reaching for a positive spin. I don't think anyone's coming away from this more optimistic, but that's not Z's fault. Kudos to him and the others for still showing up.

Sad to watch this though.
Agreed, but that's not looking too hard for a positive sign. I mean, it's meager, from Z's point of view (understandably), but yeah... I'd be completely shattered if they just opened up the market and went that far. That would be the end, I'm sure.

aww... I saw this just after it ended. Going back to watch it now. Definitely liking Zwill's character, awesome costume and name (I think that's his name, hard to read ).

I told you all I'd start watching them regularly starting this week!

Just to clarify: this is not true. They own the rights to use your character, but they don't own your character. That's not legally possible in the United States to do a legal transfer of copyrights without quite a bit of paperwork, signatures and potentially a transaction (may be different in other countries, though.)

I'm sure Arcanaville has her explanation on this on her clipboard ready to be pasted, though.

That's exactly true. Same thing goes for Canadian copyright.

I'll amend that bullet then.

Thank you for the summary, Obsidius. I tried watching it but it was too painful seeing no one in the background as I was accustomed too.

Okay, it sounds like the most trivial thing in the world, but that would have been simply awesome.

Very true , but there are many signals from that recording to encourage hope that there is much behind the scenes happening to try save not only City of Hero's but also keep the dev team together . To be honest , in my opinion both need to happen . In 14 years no other MMO has come close , and I am much traveled .

Whatever happens I truly wish the best for all members of the Paragon Studios team as you have created a genuinely unique gaming experience . Any other studio should be proud to count you as a member of their team .

Whatever happens I hope you continue with this game , if not I hope you all receive what you deserve from your careers .

I'll be honest: from where I sit, the odds aren't in our favor. But if there's one thing the heroes I've created over the years have taught me, it's that you have to fight hardest when the odds are the longest.

Paragon Studio employess have to sign NDAs upon their termination which keeps them from discussing the closure of the studio.
Err... The ****? How is that even remotely legal? How can they force you to sign something like that as they are firing you?

This is generally what most software studios/ publishers do. It's perfectly legal under the purview of protecting "trade secrets". In other words, they don't want to let the competition know their business strategies, secret projects, etc. Disgruntled employees would have nothing to keep them mum if not for NDAs, which is what they have to agree to upon employment in the first place. Basically, if you want to work for a studio, you have to agree to these sorts of contractual stipulations.

Fairly standard practice in many software related industries.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I would ask both of you to more thoroughly read the bullet point that I later clarified, or watch the video. Zwill's premise is bacillary in regards to releasing proprietary code free to the public (i.e.: private server, CoH emulator, etc.), which is highly unlikely. If someone were to purchase that proprietary code (such as another publisher), it would be a completely different matter.

Yea it's pretty common in a lot of fields. Automakers do that, manufacturing companies do that, government contracting companies do that, etc. One place I worked made us sign a 12 month no compete clause which meant once we left, we couldn't gain new employment in that industry for a year after leaving.

thanks, Obsidian, not only for writing this up which is fantastic, but for pointing that out. I was just going to remind everybody it said "not for free to the public" and said nothing about
"being bought out by another publisher" myself.

The odds might still be against this really happening, but even 5% of a chance is a heck of a lot better than 0% chance. And as others said, there must be some shred of hope on Paragon's side because they're not giving away the farm (so to speak) cash-shop-wise. (But could they even do that? They're no longer working at Paragon Studios nor for NCSoft. Does anyone even still have the "keys" to unlock that sort of thing at this point anyway?)

I agree matey , if I was unclear I apologize . The only way I see the game possibly moving on as is would require a management buyout . If Paragon studios was truly a profitable arm of NC soft then this is a "possibility" regardless of how profitable . None of us is in the know of specifics so everything is circumstantial . If a management buy out is reasonable financially with or without backing I would support it in any way i was able .

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to imply that I thought Zwillinger's words were a death knell--I've always thought that another publisher buying CoH was really the game's best shot at avoiding shutdown. But from the start, I've known this was an uphill fight, even for the most likely outcome.

Instead of using that as a cause for despair, though, I try to use it as motivation.

Hm. Just tried loading into beta and I guess I misunderstood. I thought they meant that everyone on beta counted as VIP so we could play with things, and I know they said all the store stuff was supposed to be available to everyone now. Store won't load and it's not seeing me as a VIP. Oh well.

I had to look up what IANAL, probably because I am a lawyer! Thank Obsidius. After reading this, my hope that this game will get a reprieve from execution is pretty much dashed. Not interested in a private server even if it was feasible.

I'll probably be gone by the end of the month, only logging in on the last day to say goodbye to my angel.

The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

Oh, you forgot to mention that they answered my important question...
About whether they like movies about gladiators.
And they added a bonus question and answer about staying in a Turkish prison (Not recently, apparently).

I read that as "Beacon Mastery" at first, and thought that'd actually be a rather cool powerset. Like Traps, only moreso.
