How will shutting down affect the Market?

Since CoH is shutting down at some point in the near future, how will that affect the Market?

Hey, someone had to start this thread.

Deacon_NA announced he'd be selling everything for 1 Inf in another thread. Other people may be doing the same. On the other hand, some people may be blowing their carefully hoarded cash to purple out their characters for their last little bit of fun. Some people have started announcing their niches. Will they give them up? Does it even matter? Will crafted recipes drain out of the market as crappers (flippers who craft recipes into Enhancements for a healthy profit) leave? Will people even bother selling stuff at the Market?

And most importantly, how can we as Marketeers profit? How can we come out ahead after the game has been shut down?

Goodbye and thanks for all the fish.

I'm predicting the likelyhood of coming out ahead after the game has shut down because you had more imaginary money will be around 0%.

Maybe the gold farmers haven't gotten the news yet and you can sell them your inf.

I hate Marketeers..and you JUST reminded me why. Come out ahead? After the game dies? Gonna take screenshots of all your virtual money?

Lol.

TopDoc comes out ahead.

Actually if I spend less time sitting at my computer, or at least getting more writing done, then I'll come out ahead.

But I'm not gonna sweat doing anything different. No reason to make more money than I have, no reason to give away what I have. Probably not gonna spend a lot of time trying to earn more anyway. Not even sure I have any characters left that I must get to 50 before the servers die, because... why? If anything, I'd like to make a list of things I haven't done yet or haven't done in a long while, and try to do those.

No..it wont. You can't take it with you. Virtual money.
Be serious..do you really want to spend the last month at the AQ, being excited at alll the not really worth anything cash your making? Or out playing te game with friends? Tough choice..
And good on Deacon for selling everything at rock bottom.

Im hoping they make everything in the Market cost 1 inf. Fix it at that price. What can it hurt? Let us who didnt have billions upon billions actually be able to purple out. Oh and set the supply to the max without ever decreasing.

Well, given that everything on the market is player-supplied, I can't see that happening. And given that nobody is doing a thing to alter the game at this point, I can't see that happening. But there will probably be a lot of people dumping stuff on the market or giving stuff away, y'know...

After pondering the ramifications for some time, I feel that the primary effect will
be a sudden, sharp decline in high level recipe and IO supply.

This will produce shortages for these levels similar to the paltry supply that we've
seen already in the mid-level ranges over the past couple years.

While some may see this as bit of a balancing trend, I see the complete lack of supply
as a driving force towards extreme hyperinflation if left unchecked. Demand will be
astronomically high, leading to equally high pricing, with no counterbalancing
increase in production to reduce the demand pressure. At some point, no amount
of money will be enough to purchase an item...

Of course, the secondary effect will be:

Fire and brimstone coming down from the sky! Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes!
The dead rising from the grave!
Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats, living together!
Mass hysteria!

You know, the whole Ghostbuster thing....

Of course, those of us Ebil Marketeers with untold Billions will simply hire downtrodden,
unemployed heroes and villains to do the wailing and gnashing of teeth for us while
we sip our tea and search for lucrative opportunities elsewhere.

Cheers,
4

PS> Closing the CoX franchise seriously sucks. At this point, the only practical
recourse is to try to look at it with some humour, and move on... This post is my attempt
at doing exactly that....

Thanks for making me smile. I'm a LONG time lurker of these forums especially and love what you all scheme and are able to do with the market. I've learned a great deal from many of you and have enjoyed all the advice over the years even if this is the first proper thank you y'all get from me. This also explains why 12 bids I've been sitting on for over a month now were suddenly filled over the same night (even one ridiculously low bid that was a reminder to bid for myself in a specific personal project once a specific character had the money sorta thing...almost feel guilty about that one....almost). The market is absolutely crazy right now!

To never die and to conquer all, that is winning.

The rich keep getting richer and the poor... no that's right, we're all going to be equalized soon with 0 moneys. This is equality at its best. The pro football players of Paragon and the homeless man will be equal.

You guys are adding silver linings to the storm clouds.

I'll miss you guys. If it was legal I'd adopt all of the COX fanbase. Be your dad. You'd all by my kids.

I am sitting on perhaps 250 purple IOs, 100 Panacea IOs, and much much more that I may just dump on the market. This was a constantly replenishing stash that was used to supply my brother, my friend, and myself with fully powered alts.

I'm going to keep all my stuff and make a killing when NC changes their mind and the game stays.

Oh Jesus Christ, thank you for this, TopDoc. *hug*

I admit the same question has crossed my mind. I imagine some people will start spending their hoarded influence, and other people will start selling their hoarded goods. That should more or less balance out, but I'd expect more randomness and volatility. If one guy spends several hours spending tens or hundreds of billions of inf, it could suck the market dry of many goods and cause prices to spike to insane levels for a little while. If someone else goes out the next day and spends several hours emptying out every storage bin in every SG on every server where they have a footprint, it could saturate large swaths of the market and push prices into the basement for a little while.

Overall, the biggest impact I worry about seeing is that no one will bother crafting and selling common IOs. They'll just make enough for their own purposes. I don't know how other people will choose to spend their final days, but I think crafting is unlikely to be a big draw.

Well, I managed to get four purple drops while trying to get my son's character to 50 (not there yet). Crafted four and sold three, total profit: 450M, setting a new total-on-one-character-at-one-time record of 605M.

If the third purple sells, I'll reach nearly 700M. Prices really have dropped lately. Never made it to the 1B club.

Oh well. It isn't like I tried all that hard.

Not only am I holding on to my stuff, in the niches I was working, I had tiered bids going down to prices we haven't seen in years. Not thinking about it, I left them up. Almost all have been filled as people started dumping stuff.

If the game does live on, I've got a serious windfall. (crosses fingers)

Anticipating the changes to Blasters, I was doing some modest flipping of ATOs. When I found out the end was near, I went ahead and put all the ATOs I had acquired up for sale, at my normal rates. Some pieces sold completely over night, and some won't budge. In fact the ones that won't budge were selling for less than half of what I bought them for, last time I looked.

I plan to keep whatever assets I have in place. You can't take it with you, but I never had it in the first place. My characters will live on in Valhalla comfortably .
