If you haven't looked at the new Skulls, please do.
Good idea, actually.
Before I post these, I WILL say that I do enjoy the female members and the Death Walker bosses. However, everything else? Pass. I hate the hair, the designer-looking clothes, and the terrible Yakov accents. - - - - - - - |
These look great, and far superior to the old SKull apprearances. Likelike like. Now please revamp the Family, they need some new Gucci suits or something.....

I have a countless number of skull toons so I would like to get my paws on the new mask as well.
Allegedly the masks are available in the next Halloween bundle.
The new look is fine, except for the silly club hair, as others have pointed out. It looks bad on everyone, ergo it looks bad on Skulls, too. The doofus hair also looks pretty bad in general.
And I am not a fan of making characters 'sound' ethnic in text. So far in this game it has been pretty ham-fisted and in some cases borderline offensive. The writers should probably just stop doing it.
Other than that, the revamp seems pretty good to me.
Honestly, I'm not 100% sold on the new look.
It's pretty good and keeps with the general feel pretty well with just a few exceptions: I liked the ripped jeans and vests that they had before. Mainly, I (just my personal opinion) am not really a fan of the NPC enemies using the same character models and parts as us. Everything gets a little too samey for my eyes and my tastes.
All that aside, I'd just like to see a few tweaks:
- Insignias on their jacket backs
- Ripped jeans
- Ditch the Club Hair
I mean... the current Skulls do have symbols on their backs, right? Or is it just the Hellions?
*goes to log in*
Also, not a huge fan of how the skull masks look, but I'm not against them or anything. I just wasn't blown away with the feeling Yes! The Skulls visual revamp a great improvement!
However, the revamp is not a swing and a miss or anything like that to my eyes.

This is the only costume I DON'T like. Is there something wrong with my eyes, or is he wearing BLUE? Blue is not a color worn by a death cult, not even dark blue!
|
And they're not a death cult... They just have death-inspired themes. They're drug dealers, weapons traffickers, rioters and general thugs. The Hellions are actually demon worshippers, though.
Honestly, I don't know what to think about these outfits. I like the direction, in that I like that NPCs are starting to wear outfits in the same way our characters wear outfits. These costumes, however, are looking more like placeholders than actual costumes. They look incomplete, lacking the iconography and "wear" of the original appearances.
The bright colors are worrying, with crisp, clean, tidy outfits for a group of gritty, violent malcontents whose first answer to every problem is "****ing kill it!"
I can understand the folks who don't like these costumes. They don't have the right feel. They don't seem like Skulls outfits. They look like the gang just hijacked a bunch of Tommy Hilfiger and Hot Topic trucks, threw on the clothes inside, and went "Holy crap! My girlfriend thinks I'm Edward!"
Marrowsnap: "Oh, dear God, NO!"

Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.
I keep forgetting that the possession of an opinion is an internet crime. I'll request a mod lock. I should have figured most of the posts in this thread would be "Why doesn't the OP like this, he must be wrong."

You are welcome to your opinion, and no one is saying you are wrong for having it.
We just don't all instantly agree with you because you say we should. You should NOT be surprised by this.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

The Skulls are an enemy group in City of Heroes and City of Villains. Founded by the Petrovic brothers, the Skulls are a death worshiping cult whose initiation is a rather morbid affair. Recruits are ordered to kill a target in a rival gang (or a random person off the street) and are then taken to choose their own casket. They then must dig up a grave and take the front of the dead victim's skull as the mask that will make up their new 'face.' |
The Skulls are one of the many street gangs that operate in Paragon City. They are a death cult, of sorts, who seek personal glory and power through death, no matter whose. Today, their leaders lurk about one corner of Perez Park, called the Boneyard. They vie for control of the park, but are in the midst of a seemingly endless gang war with the Hellions. |
And FWIW, I'm cool with the update, but (sing it if you know it), that club hair must go.
Here's the real kicker and trademark I hope to see kept with the revamp:
Plus, I like those tattoos better, myself.
and round up everyone that knows more than they do"-Dylan
Being the demorecord dork that I am, I also noticed them doing a few new emotes... stumbled across a Death Head Buckshot who was rummaging through a woman's purse, tossing stuff over his shoulder every now and again.
Then there's the one where someone's carrying a speaker (seen in an earlier picture)... that one needs to be done by those Freakshow in Brickstown who stand around shouting, "Fresh inventory, get it while it's still hot!"

If you do, please log in to Beta, go to Kings Row, and give your thoughts on the new Skulls. All of my in-game buddies and I have absolutely hated what's been done to them. |
I like the update.
Even the club hair.
Think about the kids most likely to join a gang like the Skulls. Emo kids would flock to a gang like that in droves. I don't know about you, but I've seen some absolutely ridiculous haircuts on emo kids. It fits perfectly with the idea that an emo kid joined a death cult, which is a perfectly logical thing to have happen.

FWIW, while I do in general approve of adding females to some of the all-male foe groups, I think it is best if they're approached in a creative way and not just dropped in. I'm not fond of the Girlfriend from Hell toon that was added to the Hellions. For me, it's a one-off joke that was made into a standard mob character, which a type of practice I don't like.
|
That said, the Girlfriends from Hell are not a bad idea, they're just terribly executed. One of Twinshot's arcs - the one which introduces difficulty sliders - suggests that the Hellions don't realise that these women are demons. To them, the Girlfriends from Hell look and sound like any other woman, so when they start chanting arcane rituals and fighting, the Hellions are like "Err... Babe, what are you talking about? What blood sacrifice?" It's played as though these are succubus demons that the Hellions have summoned, who are now using and controlling he dim-witted thugs into doing a much more meaningful, much more sinister ritual of some sort. It's a very engaging plot thread that's simply never done anything with.
next time you're working on a costume, try putting together some of the old pieces with some of the new higher resolution ones.
You can occasionally get away with it, but it usually looks pretty crummy. |
Old Chitin texture, old Large boots, comined with new Clockwork chest piece, Alpha shoulders and Olympian Guard gloves, but with the old Bonehead mask and 2004 head details. You can very much combine old and new costume pieces and do just fine, it's simply a matter of doing it right.

Them using shovels would be great.
I'd like them to keep the skulls pattern on the back of their shirts as well.
The rest, I'm happy with.
I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.
Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.
So sad to be ending ):
I'm just about fine with the update, myself. The new Skulls look almost exactly like the old Skulls. Sure, they lack some finer details, but they look the part as far as I could tell. I don't remember their old costumes in detail. I'd still like to see their insignias on their jacks, admittedly, but then I never understood where they were getting those logo jackets from. Is there a Gangs-R-Us that sells logo jackets or do they have Grave Digger Sewers who make them?
I like almost everything about the new Skulls. The only thing I hate is the hair. I never liked the male Party hair. It looks like an animal died on the guy's head and just sort of stayed there. It's too "big," as it were. I'd like to see them use more regular hairdos.
That said, the Circle of Thorns these are not, and all the better for it. The new CoT are a complete reimagining, turning them into something very different from the old robe-wearing evil cult. I'm glad to see that the new Skulls look so much like the old Skulls.

The Pocket D hair must STAY, because its perfect for these wannabe-Eurotrash, wannabe-eeeeeeevil doofuses.
And speaking of doofuses, what better than this bunch also latches onto the Fabulous Disaster aka the male Doofus hairstyle? Perfect! [Perhaps CoX's ugliest male hairstyle ever.]

Weight training: Because you'll never hear someone lament "If only I were weaker, I could have saved them."
I really like these new Skulls, actually. They look really good.
The male club hair is surprising, but not unpleasant. To me it either looks like unwashed, ratty hair or a young adult trying to look cool, I'm not sure which one. But both of them really fit Skulls anyway, since their members probably range between trying to look cool and actually not caring. Of any gang in Paragon or the Isles, the Skulls are definitely the ones that got the wannabe tough-guys and 'no one understands me' teenagers.
