Mythological costumes

I was thinking of making a djinni to ride my magic carpet and I came to a horrifying realization. We don't have a turban. Or a vest without a shirt. Or a fez. In fact, we could use some more mythological type costume parts in general.

Living the dream of the forty thieves? Wanna look like you escaped from one of Sinbad's journeys? Sultan Haroun al-Raschid sent you on an eternal quest? Discovered the Key of Solomon and now you have amazing powers of dust and wind? You're stalking the night, one of the wretched ghuls? Maybe you were cursed by an ifrit!

There could be a whole series of these, and with the high quality of our recent costume sets, they could be really amazing.

Think of it. African mythology. Aztec. Russian. Lots of boss costume ideas hiding in those mythologies.

Just spitballing here. Anybody think this'd be a good idea?

Mythological's probably a bad word to use for this. It's very vague, and I'm pretty sure fezzes aren't a myth.

I totally support getting some culture packs, though. Tribal, Middle Eastern, Russian, etc. are all cultures and themes that are sorely under represented in this game's costume creator.

Well, Females have a mini-vest that very genie-ish available. But I get your point.

The trick with packs like that would be avoiding any sort of stereotypes with it.

Heh... okay, yeah, maybe I went a little wonky with my suggestion's name. Turbans are pretty real, too, I think.

Culture would be a better way of putting it. We've got lots of Eastern culture stuff, with the Imperial Dynasty, the various types of Kung-fu garb, and what have you. Rome and Greece are pretty well covered. There's some Egyptian stuff.

I'd like to see more Middle Eastern, or Indian (slay the Raksha!) or Tribal (that's a big catch all, though, as different tribal cultures had different unique looks), or historical Russian (lots to mine there!).

Maybe I'm too excited because I've been up for thirty-six hours. *heh*

Egyptian is a concept I, personally, would love to see fleshed far more than we have now. So far it's just a khopesh, a hat, and a beard that we have.

Actually, there's an idea. Maybe a chest detail you see on the sarcophagii, maybe a shepherd's crook mace or flail weapon model. Bracelets, something we've kind of needed anyway. More face patterns. A robe. Leather sandals that lace up the legs, which would work for a Roman concept as well. The headdresses worn by the common folks. Something like what Scirrocco wears, maybe?

Culture packs have been requested for years. Check out the All Things Character Art thread by the Fantabulous Costume Designer Dev Dink. She keeps an eye on that thread and responds when she can. You'll see these suggestions have been made, in some cases with a complete idea listing of what to include.

"If I fail, they write me off as another statistic. If I succeed, they pay me a million bucks to fly out to Hollywood and fart." --- George A. Romero
"If I had any dignity, that would have been humiliating" --- Adam Savage

Thanks, Kheprera! I had -no- idea where to include a suggestion such as this. Your assistance was appreciated.

A turban would be nice

The thing about the Turban is it's a religious symbol (of Sikhism). CoH tries to avoid religious symbols, although that prohibition has declined recently.

I really should do something about this signature.

I'd be more inclined to say that the trick would be to embrace and celebrate the stereotypical trappings while avoiding labels that may be deemed racist.

And I'd say that many of these sorts of items could probably be lumped under a title like: Pulp Adventurer Pack.

So are crosses, and we have plenty of those as chest details. We even have a vaguely Pentagram like chest detail.

i.e. stupid 'rule' (I've never seen it written down) is stupid. If anyone makes anything offensive, report and mod-smack the idiots. Simple.

While it may be a religious symbol, it's also a historical garment. Or a modern one. We do see religious figures wearing them, but in art (including the medium of comics), we see the turban used as a garment with no more indication of its meaning beyond "This guy is wearing a turban. He's probably a djinni, a friend of Sinbad, or a mystic of some sort."

Its a historical garment and modern garment, worn by historical and modern sikhs.

If you are going to add turbans, you should add burqas too, so Muslims don't feel left out...

"Or is currently friends with Johnny Quest."

I would like better feet for barefoot characters. This would fit any of the culture packs except Russian probably.

"I've heard tell of this hat in the tales to scare small children. But it isn't real. It can't be real!"

"Oh how little you know. BEHOLD THE FEZ!"

Turbans are common in desert areas where people are trying to keep the sun off their heads. I suspect you have never been to a desert or seen a clip/movie about people in the desert or read an article about people in the desert...

Either that or you are deliberately not including the valid use of a turban that has nothing to do with religion. But you couldn't possibly be disingenuous on the internet. That never happens!

Also, it was a popular fashion item in the twenties or thirties, I can't remember which.

I don't buy every costume set that comes out, but I would buy every one that's been mentioned so far in this thread. The Imperial Dynasty pack was great, and a total surprise to me. More of that! Russian in particular sounds like fun, and Egyptian.

The look popularized by Aladdin is IMO possibly safe. I can think of some possibly offensive things you could do with that costume, although I can think of probably worse things you can do with a few other parts.

Also want: a jacket/cape/trenchcoat with shoulders that sweep up in a villainous arc, like Jafar is wearing in the pic.

The truth of the matter is nothing is safe. Anything the devs put out could be used in a derogatory matter. Just because you, me, or little Johnny can't think of a way, doesn't mean that the guy across the street can't.

The whole excuse of "But so-and-so could be used in an non-politically correct manner" is getting so old, and possibly preventing so many perfectly valid additions to this game that I am getting completely and utterly sick of it.

I know you weren't reasoning as such, but I'm sure someone in this thread is bound to.

And yes, Jafar's cape would be totally badass. Same with the robe that the Warlock in Venture Bros wears.. His name escapes me atm. (Orpheus I think?)
