Link.

Given all the preservatives I consume on a daily basis, I might just see this.

Another poor hack job of reporting.

You don't say 'slam' several times and then, almost as an afterthought, mention the fact that, being mostly empty space, there will be hardly any collisions. It would be like saying two marching bands, in which the players left a mile space between themselves, 'slammed' into each other as they marched through the same field from different directions.

It's like saying, "I'm going to slam my fight through this field of fire flies!"

Well, for the unwashed masses that's a good enough approximation.

If anyone seriously gets upset that we're toast in a few billion years they have some serious anxiety issues.

After all, should the earth remain unaffected by the merger a scant billion years later the sun will become a red giant and eat the earth anyways.

And all of that is assuming our current understanding of the rate of increase of the sun's luminosity is wrong. If we're right then in about a mere billion years all the surface water on earth will be boiled off bringing the glorious reign of terrestial life to an end.

When you get right down to it, Kansas was far to optimistic with 'Dust In the Wind' (Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky? Wrong on both counts.)

We're not toast... there's plenty of room to accommodate all of the stars in the Milkomeda galaxy. The only thing that will change is the night sky.

You know, this wouldn't be a problem if Andromeda would learn to use her blinker signals...

I find your lack of signature disturbing.

She has.

But much like the 90 year old on the Interstate, her turn signal has been on for the last 70 miles.

... and that the collision itself will take 2 billion years.

I mean, talk about "bullet time."

Item 1: survive collision of galaxy.

Hmmm...this might take a while.

Wait, how long until the hypothetical would Big Rip make the observable universe no larger than the local star cluster? That might impact observations.

Was even able to pick out a couple of sunspots.

It was a quick hack with what I had in my car because it's rare that when something interesting happens in the skies (meteor showers, auroras, eclipses, etc) that the weather cooperates where I live. It's not like we're overcast all the time but it's often enough to think Mother Nature doesn't want me to watch the skies.

I was using a welder's mask and could make out Venus transiting. It was pretty neat. Just a tiny little dot on the sun, but still.

Most impressive part of that video was the various images of the Sun using different wavelengths of light and that can be seen anytime with the proper instruments. Only thing cool about it is how rare it is.
