Rob Liefeld badmouths Deadpool, draws more pouches

The mind of Liefeld:

"I'm gonna draw a bright moon behind him. Let's see, since I'm looking up at him, the moon should be elongated, right? <draw, draw, draw> Hmmm... even *I* know that the moon doesn't look like *that*. <erase, draw over, erase draw over> Damn! Still not right. When you elongate the moon, does it close up like an ellipse or just keep expanding like a parabola? <shrug, erase, draw over> Damn, still not right. Heck with it, I'll make it into a spotlight. But doesn't a spotlight effect the character? No, this spotlight goes around the character, that's why I don't have to draw its effects on him or create a shadow. Let's see, on the white part of the wall, the spotlight obviously is going be bright white while the white wall is nearly black. And on the broken grey part of the wall, there will be little contrast... that's how lighting works, right? Yeah, pretty sure that's how lighting works."

I seriously doubt the Liefeld lexicon include words like parabola, ellipse or elongate. Rather I see Liefeld saying something like "I have Arnold Schwarzenegger's sword from the first 'Conan the Barbarian.' After the premier of 'True Lies' there was an auction, and I bought that. On the blade, he signed 'Arnold Schwarzenegger.' I have it framed, and I have a big picture of him as Conan with that exact sword in a giant display in my theater room. Now, we look at it and go, 'Hey it's the governor's sword!' And once he fixes all of the rules, it will be the president's sword."

Why do I see him saying that? Because he did!

The arms in that first pic kinda makes him look like a t-rex.
They look very short and the hands are tiiiiny.

Oh Rob!

Your "modern, rogue, mercenary action-adventure" is 20 years behind the times and should go back to 1994 and die.

Story time (sans exact details I've forgotten): A friend in the comics shop I worked at years ago got a page of original art RL had done for a Hawk&Dove back-up at DC, before he became famous. Said pencil work had been inked by someone famous, but who's name I've forgotten; any nerd worth his backboards would recognize it.

Now, when you erase the pencil lines "enough" so they don't show up on the printed page (this was before scanning, natch), they often still showed enough on the original art itself to make them out just fine. My friend pointed out that the inker had taken the trouble to draw in all the wrists and ankles that RL... flubbed. Faked. Ignored. Pretended he could get away with.

My guess is he'll be drawing this way till the day he dies.

I don't think he even knows what he's saying anymore. I think his mouth just does its own thing and his brain has checked out.

Oh. Wanna see the new Bloodstrike?

In true Liefeld style: No feet, enormous ribcages and muscles, POUCHES FOR NO REASON, TEENY TINY head, mismatched anatomy, banana-thigh and extraneous lines.

Nailed it!
The arms are to short also.

My wife (a long-time comic geek herself, as well as a graphic designer) took one look at Bloodstrike there and said "That's Deadpool's head on Cable's body, with Shatterstar's swords."

Then we spent a while making fun of how combining three of the 1990-est of the 1990s characters does not a "modern" character make. (And a little more time mocking that Deadshattercable there has a grand total of zero feet)

I still remember when Liefeld did a two issue guest stint on Teen Titans a few years back. I looked at what was on the cover and looked over at the guy working at the comic shop and said, "We should be able to sue DC for defamation of character for this." And pointed at the little blurb on the cover that read "Because you demanded it.... Rob Liefeld"

At this point there's only one possible reason that Liefeld still gets hired to draw. Blackmail. He's Mr. Boddy from the movie Clue. He's got dirt on everyone running a comic company.

Check out the Issue 23 splash page and take a real good look at Penelope Yin's right leg. It's like a foot longer than the left and seems to have a second knee in it.

I've heard that Liefeld gets work because he is professional, polite, and always gets his pages done on time.

I forget who said it, but the classic way to get work in Hollywood is to be either talented, a dedicated professional, or pleasant to work with. Sounds like Liefeld is two of those three.
