Flambeaux "inspired" by G.K. Chesterton?
That's interesting. The evidence is more compelling with the title "The Flying Stars" in contrast to City of Heroes group she's affiliated with "The Shining Stars". Having not read this book, I'm interested if the rest of the cast is somehow represented by members of this supergroup as well? Twinshot, Proton, etc.
"I play characters. I have to have a very strong visual appearance, backstory, name, etc. to get involved with a character, otherwise I simply won't play it very long. I'm not an RPer by any stretch of the imagination, but character concept is very important for me."- Back Alley Brawler
I couldn't agree more.
I don't think Flambeaux was originally designed to fall into villainy. Or be a member of the Shining Stars, for that matter.

to TO THE END!
Villains are those who dedicate their lives to causing mayhem. Villians are people from the planet Villia!
Flambeau also reforms after his first few appearances, becoming a friend (and professional detective himself). Flying Stars is actually his last appearance as a criminal. (It's also a fake name as well - his actual name is Hercule Duroc)
As for Flambeaux, yeah, she didn't start acting villainous (or really get much of a personality at all) until she started appearing in Tip missions, long after she'd already been introduced to the game.
They're both named for the French word for "torch", though Flambeaux is plural for some reason.

I was reading about G.K. Chesterton the other day on Wikipedia, and came across this interesting bit about his Father Brown stories:
The character name there, along with Father Brown's description of a criminal becoming worse and worse, resembles Flambeaux's "descent" in-game. I have to wonder if this bit of Chesterton was part of the inspiration for the CoH Flambeaux character. |
I really should do something about this signature.
I've read the stories, and I can't see that much resemblance, apart from the name. The CoH character is female, dim, spoiled and vain, and starts as a Hero. The C.K. Chesterton character is male, highly intelligent, a bit spoiled and vain, and starts as a Rogue, eventually becoming a hero as a result of Father Brown's intervention.

While we're on the subject of Chesterton, I commend The Man Who Was Thursday, one of the strangest espionage stories of all time, to everyone's attention.
I was going to teach a course on Law and Literature where one of the books would be Chesterton's Club of Queer Trades (the connection with law becomes clear if you read the book), but the idea for the course was rejected before I could make a final proposal.
