Flambeaux "inspired" by G.K. Chesterton?

I was reading about G.K. Chesterton the other day on Wikipedia, and came across this interesting bit about his Father Brown stories:

Quote:
Father Brown is perpetually correcting the incorrect vision of the bewildered folks at the scene of the crime and wandering off at the end with the criminal to exercise his priestly role of recognition and repentance. For example, in the story "The Flying Stars", Father Brown entreats the character Flambeau to give up his life of crime: "There is still youth and honour and humour in you; don't fancy they will last in that trade. Men may keep a sort of level of good, but no man has ever been able to keep on one level of evil. That road goes down and down. The kind man drinks and turns cruel; the frank man kills and lies about it. Many a man I've known started like you to be an honest outlaw, a merry robber of the rich, and ended stamped into slime."
The character name there, along with Father Brown's description of a criminal becoming worse and worse, resembles Flambeaux's "descent" in-game. I have to wonder if this bit of Chesterton was part of the inspiration for the CoH Flambeaux character.

That's interesting. The evidence is more compelling with the title "The Flying Stars" in contrast to City of Heroes group she's affiliated with "The Shining Stars". Having not read this book, I'm interested if the rest of the cast is somehow represented by members of this supergroup as well? Twinshot, Proton, etc.

"I play characters. I have to have a very strong visual appearance, backstory, name, etc. to get involved with a character, otherwise I simply won't play it very long. I'm not an RPer by any stretch of the imagination, but character concept is very important for me."- Back Alley Brawler
I couldn't agree more.

I don't think Flambeaux was originally designed to fall into villainy. Or be a member of the Shining Stars, for that matter.

Yeah, originally her only purpose was to be one for the heroes who would stop Villains in one of the Mayhem Missions. I believe the Atlas Park mission to be specific.

to TO THE END!
Villains are those who dedicate their lives to causing mayhem. Villians are people from the planet Villia!

Flambeau also reforms after his first few appearances, becoming a friend (and professional detective himself). Flying Stars is actually his last appearance as a criminal. (It's also a fake name as well - his actual name is Hercule Duroc)

As for Flambeaux, yeah, she didn't start acting villainous (or really get much of a personality at all) until she started appearing in Tip missions, long after she'd already been introduced to the game.

They're both named for the French word for "torch", though Flambeaux is plural for some reason.

I don't think it was a "book" per se - I got the impression that the Father Brown stories were short stories published in a magazine, much like Sherlock Holmes. I've haven't read them, so I'm not sure how much of a "recurring cast" there was from one story to the next.

Hmmm... plural? That would support some of my theories about Flambeaux suffering from multiple personality disorder...

Yep, he passed in 1936 so that's 76 years ago, one year clear of authored copyright which is life+75 years if IIRC.

So they're only just out of the woods

although, I don't know of anything that was published after a certain cartoon mouse made it's debut that has gone into the public domain (and probably never will if a certain corporation continues to buy copyright law

I like tea!

And yeah, public domain. I picked up Chesterton's Orthodoxy for free on my Kindle.

You should be able to get The Flying Inn free as well; that's my favorite Chesterton piece. Funny stuff.

I used to fiddle with my back feet music for a black onyx. My entire room absorbed every echo. The music was . . . thud like. The music was . . . thud like. I usually played such things as rough-neck and thug. Opaque melodies that would bug most people. Music from the other side of the fence.

I'm really heartened to see people reading Father Brown stories.

I've read the stories, and I can't see that much resemblance, apart from the name. The CoH character is female, dim, spoiled and vain, and starts as a Hero. The C.K. Chesterton character is male, highly intelligent, a bit spoiled and vain, and starts as a Rogue, eventually becoming a hero as a result of Father Brown's intervention.

I really should do something about this signature.

I wasn't thinking that Flambeaux was prefectly modeled after Flambeau himself. Rather, the name, plus Father Brown's words about not staying on one level of evil. When she starts showing up in Hero tip missions, at first she's just being a bit unethical in her attempts to get attention, like apparently setting up a situation so that she can run in and "save the day". But it gradually gets worse until, by the higher-level tip missions, she's actively committing violent crimes herself.

While we're on the subject of Chesterton, I commend The Man Who Was Thursday, one of the strangest espionage stories of all time, to everyone's attention.

I was going to teach a course on Law and Literature where one of the books would be Chesterton's Club of Queer Trades (the connection with law becomes clear if you read the book), but the idea for the course was rejected before I could make a final proposal.
