Admin channel event spam

I am guessing that Zwillinger possibly goofed a time or two and posted in Admin channel instead of Zone Admin channel.

I know that I, and lots of other, people mistype messages into the wrong channels all the time.

Okay I debated about if i really even cared enough to respond to this but ultimately I decide to do so.

Let's start with this ...,. Yes I do understand that the City of heroes/Villains is a MMOPRG

Now that said as far as the bright red bold text interfering with GAME PLAY. Let's try to define what that means shall we. I know a LOT of players in this game, and I play on Virtue the unofficial RP server, that have never once in all the time they have been associated with it role played. It is extremely possible to PLAY the game from level 1 to Level 50, go to Dark Astoria and participate in Incarnate trials until all of your powers are Tier 4 and not once EVER EVER participate in a role playing session. And the last one of the events I was on line during took place while I was running trials in DA and I don't RECALL it affecting us at all as we breezed through a TPN.

Now much as the OP and others may enjoy standing around role playing and they have every right to do so.. it has absolutely nothing to do actually participating in game content and advancing a character.

Next let's look back at when the Nemesis invasions began.. After a few days the moaning and griping began that the invasion wasn't interactive enough, it was just the rikti invasion with different mobs and WHY WHY couldn't the devs do something to make it more exciting. SO Zwilliger and Frietag started events where Nemesis himself actually taunts those trying to repel his forces and, having participated in one, they send in multiple GM versions of the Brass Prince to liven things up a bit. Now I am not on line 24 hours a day 7 days a week but I play a LOT and to date I have seen a grand total of 2 special events involving the bright red text. While at times it does seem like the invasions go on forever .. trust me I spent 20 minutes on a Numina a week or so ago while they attacked Kings Row... Its not like a Dev run event is popping up and filling our screens with Spam every hour on the hour.

Basically what it comes down to is the old adage that you simply can't please all of the people all of the time. While those BIG BOLD RED LETTER Events annoy you they are providing someone else with added entertainment while they battle the Nemesis invaders. to put it another way and use a popular signature line from the forums.. If the Devs handed out stacks of 20 dollar bills to players half would complain because the serial numbers were non sequencial and the other half would complain they were not random enough.

Lastly try to think back a couple years agio, if you have been around that long, how often did you see let alone get to interact with ANY Developer? The quick answer is one or two MIGHT show up around the Winter Holiday or other special events in Pocket D and hand out a few Yellow titles and answer a couple of questions. Then Zwilliger arrived and suddenly we have a Dev that will just show up out of the blue and unleash a hord of Winter Lords all over the RWZ, along with several other Devs show up and help host a fashion show in Port Oakes, show up in Recluse Victory and play hide and seek ... and thats just a few off the top of my head. We have a couple of realy proactive Customer Reps that genuinely seem to enjoy interacting with us. Now considering how most big buisnesses treat their customers can anyone honestly say they HATE what we have now?

If you can't stand looking at the text LOG off for 30 minutes and it will be gone.

Really wish it go kept to broadcast, when Nemesis was replying to thinks in broadcast.

But for letting people know an event is going on, I'm fine with it. But a one sided conversation, where the main badguy is horribly horribly RPed, I'd rather avoid seeing.

Hell it was so bad, I decided not to attend the event because of the horrible attempt at (and quite likely done on purpose) RPing Nemesis.

I wasn't around for any of the poor RP in admin chat that has been mentioned (but, hey, we all have our off nights!), but I did just want to say...

As a role-player, the big bold red text in every single channel interrupts my game play (and role-play) just as much as having to sit in a chair, use a keyboard, look at a screen and read chat does.

Oh, the difficult hurdles that life throws at us!!

I have a problem with this line. It's very...straight forward. It also assumes there is no solution for both parties.

It's a little insulting to the game developers to tell the playerbase that the CoX team cannot find any solution to this problem.

I have more faith in the CoX team to fix this, meaning I don't believe that line I quoted.

They're smart people, they'll find a way to make it less annoying. You should be telling people that you're aware of the situation and the developers are thinking of a way to accommodate everyone.

The above line will only make people angry, as it implies that time and thought will not even be wasted on the subject, and their opinions on the matter are worthless.

Off the top of my head, he complained about his steam powered computer crashing, gave a shout out to a specific player, commented on his war horses not showing up, responded to a couple questions, made a pretty corny and unintimidating threat or two, among a few other unimportant things that should've been put only in zone-wide chat.

It got old really quickly, and was pretty painful to read through due to how cornball and silly it was. I'm not asking for award winning banter here, but this isn't Bad Penny we're talking about. It's Lord Nemesis, the man who took advantage of WWII and seized control of the Americas. At least act like you're treating your character seriously.

And despite what Zwill said, only around 25% of what was said qualified as "important."

Actually the line you quoted makes me happy.
They know and understand the different opinions, but they believe in what they're doing and it makes me happy, because I think there's a small amount of people who actually find it to be a problem and they're not going to be bullied into worrying about "Oh, dear... the few times when we 'spam' our red admin chat, some few people would prefer not to have to see it". They want the admin chat to be unavoidable, for the reasons stated.
Unavoidable does not mean avoidable by choice.
Unavoidable so that no one can ever accidentally opt out of it.
I know it is tough, but we're just going to have to deal with it. I'm pretty sure it is okay.
Also, it makes me very happy when they deliver the truth, no guesswork for us, no matter who will or won't like it.

The funny part to me is.. Only on the forums does this seem to upset people. I was in a league with 23 other players and we not only found it informative...but we also all found it quite funny. After our trial we entered into Atlas and broadcast was a flutter with jokes etc...as was the Help chan. Considering how often this happens...to me it is a complete non-issue...but then again this is the forums and people will make mountains out of a grain of sand.

In other words, he was engaging the majority of the community, and not the RPer minority.

And shout outs are fun - during the loyalist invaison last year, I got threatened by Tyrant because I made a picture of Null the Gull sitting on his throne

You are forgetting the other factions of players Wendy.

There will be some complaining that they want the new style twenties, and the ones that want the old style twenties.

Some will be mad they got brand new bills that tend to stick together, while others won't want used bills.

Then there will be the ones that are mad they didn't get any twenties with 5 nine's in the serial number.

And the ones that wanted fifties or hundreds cuz stacks of twenties are too bulky/heavy to carry around.

Others will be complaining they didn't give out smaller denominations.

And we can't forget the ones that will be mad they didn't give out Pesos, Pounds, Yen, Francs, Deutchmarks, Rubles, Euros.

Someone will threaten to sue, and another will make a bizarre analogy how being given free currency is like giving a starving man moldy, rotten insect infested food.

And you and I will sit and laugh at the bizarre complaints.

My signature that Wendy was referencing is a paraphrase of something a game developer used to say around the office. Yes, there are more situations than just the two in the signature, but he didn't need to mention all of those other things to make his point.

Since I never could find the chat logs where I was told this line (it was said in a global channel by someone that worked with the game developer), I don't put it in quotes or attribute it to that game developer.

Also, if I were doing it as a quote I'd have asked his permission first. It's the polite thing to do since it wasn't a statement made in an interview, on a forum discussion or similar.

Without his permission, I won't even give his name. Similarly, without the permission of the person that told me I won't give their name either.

EDIT: I've been asked a few times about the signature but have never told where it came from in full. This is the closest I've come and likely the closest I'll ever come to telling the entire story.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

I do understand, and apologize that we may be disturbing your game play for a short period of time, however the admin channel is what we use to be certain that everyone knows the event is happening for the duration of the event. Because these events are relatively spontaneous this year (I can't allocate 4-6 hours a day for the entire team for a month solid to schedule the events out) it's very important that everyone know a live event is happening.

Take solace in the fact that we are usually only present for 30-45 minutes. Also, keep in mind that some of the "admin chat" is actually done in the "zone admin" channel which only hits the map it's on.
END THREAD.

In the last month or so I actually saw this happen. Admin announcement came through and then nothing. Checked Help chat and saw banter being thrown around, half a conversation.

Just take solace in the fact that the automated event no longer uses global admin like the first round of Rikti invasions did.

It's a variation of another quote (or vice versa) that was going around a while back that went, If the devs gave the players their weight in gold there'd be people complaining they weren't given a wheelbarrow.

I agree with this...and I don't even RP.

I always saw this game as the more serious superhero MMO of the two available.

Now perception is subjective...but you can't deny that the Nem RP can get ridiculous.

I feel for the new players who now only know Nemesis by that.

That being said...I really am all for the devs RPing as the enemy during these events...bringing life to the enemy...but it should be taken more serious...in my opinion.

If that is true, than I understand completely.

On the other hand, I may even go as far as to say the majority of people dislike it. The complaints from people about the red admin chat and not being able to turn it off is sometimes more than the admin chat itself. This means the annoyance is even higher.

I expect people to complain about something they don't like, and I can't blame them. I -can- blame COH if they refuse to come up with a solution, but only if a large enough population is complaining about it.

Simply put, if I am alone, fine. If they're ignoring a large percent of their population, not fine.

I think a lot of people would agree with that, including some who are for no change to the admin chat. If the majority want it changed, it should be changed.

That being said, I doubt believe anyone here has numbers on how many it's annoying. The forums represent a small population. Perhaps it's specifically annoying to those who don't go on the forums because those are the people who don't like participating. That's a definite possibility.

We're all just playing it by ear on how many are being affected. It may only be 10% of the forums, but 50% of the game. It may be that people on the forums have a stronger opinion and nobody cares ingame. Then it may be 20% of the forums and 10% of the game.

It all comes down to the percentages for me personally.

This is what happens when you put non-writers in these roles. You get hit with a solid dose of unfunny nerd humour that is completely out of character.

Eh, Nemesis going on about My Little Pony, just doesn't seem to be Lord Nemesis, no matter how much people may like the idea of a My Little Nemesis War Pony.

But the event themselves, I do like, when rednames come out and interract with the community. That itself is awesome!
