Who will win - Batman or Avengers....

I think Nolan's (*cough*over*cough*)done about all he can do with Batman since the previous film.

So, Make Mine Marvel.

I have no doubt TDK will win in terms of revenue. I personally am favoring TDK over Avengers but I'll likely see them both. The only movie I haven't seen out of that series is the Hulk as I really, really don't like the character. Iron Man was cool, didn't like the end of Thor and as much as I try to root for Captain, it just felt like it was missing something. I'm also betting Downey will steal the show with one-liners.

Versus two very good Batman movies. I don't care for Catwoman but I expect Hardy to make an excellent Bane. He should certainly be able to literally fill the role if you've seen Warrior.

Yes, Star, we get it. You hate Batman. You can stop beating that dead horse.

And in answer to the question as to who will win

Maybe in box office receipts, but not once merchandising is taken into account. The Batman franchise has sacrificed a significant part of it's pre-teen audience in going for a more adult tone, and they are a big part of the merchandising market. Add to that, more heroes = more toys.

I really should do something about this signature.

I'm looking forward to both, but I'm looking forward to Batman more. I don't really care which "wins" per se, though from a personal perspective, I just hope my own expectations of both are met.

Why can't we just look forward to both, and hope that both movies are of good quality and lead to further exploration of comic licenses? Why must there be sides taken and lines drawn? I don't find the question interesting in the slightest. I find it irritating. I keep wondering why Hollywood thinks the way it does, but then I see the populace at large concerned with the same nonesense.

I am by no means a Marvel fan, but I have greatly enjoyed all the Avenger character movies that have lead up to this point. I'm a massive Batman fan, who can't wait to see Dark Knight Rises. I am excited for both. I do not know who will "win" at the box office, nor do I care, as that does not alter the quality of either movie in any way. I simply hope they are both good movies, and are awarded with ticket sales for being as such.

Sorry for being maybe a little too serious about the thread. I'm as guilty as any with nerdy discussions. I just get tired of the insults and insinuations that this slippery slope inevitably leads to.

Oh, wait!

I see someone has already arrived at the bottom. What insulting, unthinking tripe is this?

Superman is the embodiment that all superhumans aspire to.

Batman represents everything non-superhumans could ever hope to be.

I never did like the "he's just human" or "just a man" arguments against Batman. Unless he's given Superman's powers to even the playing field (and it has happened before), Batman knows that he won't be able to beat Superman-level foes in a straight fight. So he cheats. Whatever it takes to win. Mortals do it all the time in fantasy, be it against gods, dragons, demons, abominations, et al.

Now if your only power is to shoot fire or ice (and Batman has some foes that can do either one), and you have no special invulnerability or resistance to damage? Expect a punch from someone who trained in multiple martial arts to hurt. A lot.

But in the end my reasoning won't apply. "Superpowered heroes should never be taken down by non-supers even if they've trained for 1,000 years"* is the ending I usually hear from the other side. Even if your only power is to change the color of your skin, you get an automatic win.

*non-supers know the ones they can take on, and the ones they should avoid from their training. Most super-powered heroes are just content with their powers and don't undergo additional training, or don't feel the need to, which makes me like the superpowered heroes less. There are exceptions, like the Green Lantern Corps, and teams led by Cyclops and Captain America. (Cyclops and Cap don't let teammates just get by with their powers, and have them undergo combat training. None of them have ever regretted it.)

why Batman would win of course silly head....if Bats can keep a dossier on the JLA on how to take each member down...why wouldn't he keep one on the Avengers??

OHHHH....you mean box office wise....I think a draw would be best in this situation.....

In the hopes of keeping this thread back in line of what I was originally asking, this is not a thread about which will be the "better" film (pointless, as that's a completely subjective thing anyway)

This thread was asking, which of the 2 (3 if you want to include Spiderman) will be the more successful movie at the box office.

On the one hand you have Batman, which has the track record of 2 VERY well received movies already, the second of which took an astonishing amount of money.

On the other, you have a "sequel" of sorts to five popular movies with slightly mixed reviews, although generally favorable, but with an astonishing amount of fan-buzz around it atm.

I just think it's an interesting thing to discuss, especially as we're the target audience for both.

I honestly can't call it. I LOVE the Batman movies and can't wait for the third, but there's something about the Avengers movie that has me all giddy-fanboy! Personally, I think it's Joss Whedon that makes me look forward to this movie so much

I actually think The Avengers will have a disapointing box office draw. Marvel has had very little in the way of failure at the box office but out of the Avengers cast', only Iron Man has been a massive success. The others did well, but they weren't huge money makers in the same way that Spider-Man or Iron Man were.

I also think that what makes The Avengers so appealing to comics fans is exactly what's going to drive mainstream audiences away. And while I was jazzed that Joss Whedon was selected to direct the film, I think he's exactly the wrong director for the film if they were looking to make the most money making film possible. It'll please fans, but not the general audience.

And on a personal level, the more I see of The Avengers, the less I want to see it. I'm still excited, but not nearly as much as I was initially. I think it will be good, but the dialogue is looking cornier and more hokey with each new clip. That, and I'm getting a Transformers feel from some of the action scenes, which is pretty terrible.

Still, I'm jazzed about seeing it, and only time will tell as to how good it is and how successful it is, but I won't be seeing it opening night.

I know a lot of people who arent comic book fans who want to see Avengers, so I don't know.

I think part of the draw will be the fact that it's bringing together 4 movies into 1!

I'm sure both will do well, though, and they kind of complement each other: big, over-the-top action vs. gritty, psychological thriller.
As far as the "hype war" goes I actually don't mind that Batman may be losing it because I frankly think the Avengers movie has been way too OVER-HYPED at this point.

I'm not saying that Avengers is going to be a bad movie. I just think that they've released so many trailers and teasers for it that I think we've already collectively seen like half the movie already. It's gotten to the point where I'm almost actively trying NOT to see any more about it because I don't really want to go into the theater with this weird feeling that I've already seen it -before- I've seen it.

From everything I've heard about the Avengers, it sounds like it could end up as a confusing mess. Too many stars. Too many heroes. It could be awesome if done just right, but it feels like "too much" to cram one 2-hour movie. We'll see.

As of right now Rotten Tomatoes has 18 positive reviews and 1 negative one. And ironically after reading the one negative review (I like to focus on the "minority reports") what was said in it makes me want to see this movie even more.

I suspect once all the reviews come in it'll probably hold up at around 80% positive give or take.
