Well you could do the red wedding with Edmure just as a stand in and be told it's Robbs uncle/family marrying a Frey, but it lacks the depth and flavor.

Like you though, I'm glad they'll be exploring the Riverlands a bit afterall.

Here's the full list for anyone unable to go to the link:

•Mance Rayder: We’ve heard about him all season. A former member of the Night’s Watch who became the “King Beyond the Wall,” the leader of the Wildlings.
•Daario Naharis: A confident and seductive warrior.
•Jojen Reed; Meera Reed: A teenage brother and sister duo with special insights.
•Edmure Tully: A brash young member of the Tully family.
•Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Catelyn Stark’s uncle.
•Lady Selyse Florent: Stannis Baratheon’s wife.
•Shireen: Stannis’ daughter.
•Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Margaery Tyrell’s sharp-witted grandmother.
•Beric Dondarrion: A skilled knight who is the leader of the outlaw group Brotherhood Without Banners.
•Thoros of Myr: A red priest who follows the same religion as Melisandre.
•Tormund Giantsbane: A Wildling raider

"Edmure Tully: A brash young member of the Tully family."

Isn't Edmure Tully Caitlin's not that much younger brother? They make it sound like he's Robb's age.

I also heard they've had readings for Vargo Hoat. They may be losing the lisp.

Edmure is the youngest of Hoster Tully's children, but they did bump Cat's age up, so I'm not sure what they're going for. Maybe they left his age the same.

As far as brashness, they might be referring to what he did in Clash of Kings:

Quote:
In disregard of the orders he had received from King Robb, Edmure defended the crossing against the Lannisters, a fierce battle fought at Stone Mill where Gregor Clegane is pushed back. By doing so he unwittingly thwarted the plans of Robb, who had planned to allow Tywin to cross the river and then trap him between his and Edmure's army
Maybe he'll do something else to screw up Robb's plans in Season 3.

Plus I saw this as well: As a youth he was known as hot-headed but good-hearted.

Yes, I saw one of the video's of an actor reading for Vargo. Most likely they just sent the scene and didn't specify on the lisp.

Edmure and the Blackfish very surprised. I thought they'd just decided to ditch the Tully's.

And can't wait for Thoros and Beric.

Nice!!!
I'm surprised you're even kinda surprised about the Reeds. It has to be possible for Bran and Rickon to split up, and I can't see Bran allowing Rickon to go off with just anyone, so Osha pretty much has to leave with him....and Jojen is just too important to Bran's development.

There was speculation that they would spare Maester Luwin and have him go with Bran and Hodor and have Osha with Rickon. He could use his Maester knowledge of magic (which he does mention his ring for studying it) to explain things. But note I said "kind of surprised". I'd hoped they would introduce the Reeds in 3. And after watching the (almost) full perspective of Season 2 it makes sense to introduce them in 3 anyway as there was just so much going on in 2.

I don't doubt the importance of the Reeds, but also recognize that what knowledge they impart about things could be done in other cost effective ways for television (i.e. another cast member). Now that isn't saying I think it should be done that way, just that it could be. If you look back at previous posts you'll see where I talk about the Reeds. While I don't think the kids are uber important in the grand scheme of things, they are important for exposition and some important insight into Bran's gifts (again something many characters can do). But where I do think the Reeds are important is not what they know, but what their father may know. He is the only person alive that was at the Tower of Joy when Ned went to rescue Lyanna. I believe we'll finally see him in the books and what he'll have to say will be very important to the rest of the story.

This latest discussion made me think of a topic.

Minor characters- who do you think is vital to the story playing out? These are characters that must be included in the TV show for the story to work but who aren't POV or major characters. Who do you think are just window dressing (even if you think they are important)? Who can be condensed or combined? Who absolutely can not?

example- the Reeds are minor characters. Robb even though a non POV character is a major character. Dany is obviously a major character. Daario is a minor character.

And. Go.

There is only one essential minor character, and we've already met him in Season 2:

Dolorous Edd.

Characters who I think are "minor" based on that definition but need to be included:

-Coldhands.

-That guy who's part tree now whose name I can't remember. Might be possible to combine him with Coldhands.

-The guy, who or whatever he is, disguised as Paet not-the-Pig-Boy-from-that-story from the fourth book.

-Maegor the Mage. (This is merely a guess; we'll have to see if he does anything of significance in the next few books.)

-Viseryon and Rhaegal the dragons. (Already included.) So far in the novels, Drogon gets nearly all the good scenes, and he generally "represents" the dragons. I suspect this will change now that they're split up. (As an aside, has anyone else noticed that when a fantasy setting features multiple dragons of various colors, the black-scaled one is usually the one that gets the spotlight? I'm thinking of, among other things, Naomi Novik's "Temeraire" series, the story "Tea with the Black Dragon" from some years ago, and a few others, as well as A Song of Ice and Fire.)

-The Mountain That Rides. Has this guy shown up in the TV show yet? I find it hard to imagine some of the best scenes in the story without him, and he has the entertaining attribute of being utterly without redeeming features.

-The giants. They don't really do much of anything, but I think they're necessary to show just how otherworldly the region beyond the Wall, and thus the world outside the rational sphere of the Seven Kingdoms and the Esteros civilizations, really can get.

Everyone else I can think of offhand is either a "major" character by the definitions above or can be combined with other characters, condensing what's in the books into something shorter with a similar upshot. (Many of the slaver cities characters fall into this category, as do the Sand Snakes and nearly all of the rest of the Dornish royal family, including the Red Viper, despite the fact that I found him pretty entertaining.)

There's at least one scene with him and Tywin, in season 2. I didn't really notice him 'till Tywin addressed him as "Clegane", before sending him out to hunt down the Brotherhood. Maybe I expected him to be bigger, I don't know.

You guys didn't notice The Mountain That Rides decapitating his horse after he lost to Loras in a jousting match in Season 1?

Yeah... like that.

I almost consider him a major character, along with his brother The Hound. Between the two of them they set a lot of things in motion.

Yeah, the Mountain has been all over this season. Not only did they change actors (but a very good match) they changed his armor and put him in Lannister gear. He's the one that picks the people to be questioned/tortured that makes Hot Pie pee himself. He's also in quite a few Tywin scenes. Without his helmet from season 1 he just looks like a tall Lannister man.

Great season finale last night but some major changes to the story. The Sack of Winterfell was completely different... will Theon escape the clutches of Bolton's *******? Or will his Ironmen just be caught as they try to escape?

I knew Dany's experience inside the House of the Undying would be different, but killing Xaro Xhoan Daxos? Who's in charge of Quarth now?

Well technically she didn't kill him and my money is on him getting out of it somehow. Given that the vault wasn't really protecting anything, my guess is it's not as invulnerable as he made it out to be. I expect we'll see him again in the slave cities where he tries bribing her with a fleet of ships like the books.

The sack makes sense in the TV world given how they haven't introduced Ramsay yet. My guess is if they had it more like the books it may tip off the Bolton's betrayal too early or just confuse non reader fans. That said I'm a bit disappointed in how they did it. Bonking Theon upside the head "cause they wanted to go home" doesn't seem very Ironborn to me. My guess is we'll see next season that his men conspired with Ramsay's men (ala Robb's promise) that they could go home as long as they gave up Theon and we'll see Ramsay outside Winterfell with Theon in-a-sack ready for his "Reeking". My guess is the @#@&$%#@$&ing horn blowing was all communication with Dagmar and the others.

I'm re-watching parts of the episode and one of the "Previously On" scenes makes Theon's fate clear. Robb offered amnesty and safe passage to any Ironborn who surrendered... except Theon. So they just turned him over and went free! (Or died hideous deaths at Ramsay's hands in the Dreadfort)

Exactly. I think if not for that "previously on" it would have seemed like they just turned tail and ran.

The final scene was pretty neat. I was half hoping we'd get to see Sam the Slayer, but I guess that will come at the beginning of Season 3.

I *totally* expected to see The Slayer in action... but as the wights (and actual Others!) piled up, I realized he couldn't be a hero then and live. Maybe he'll kill one escaping, or when he rejoins his Brothers.

Grenn and Edd once again proved that old adage: "I don't need to outrun the bear, I just need to outrun you!"

Seeing how large scale the group of Others and Wights were, I kind of wonder if we'll still get the mutiny or if the Mormont will just perish in the fight on the Fist. If I remember correctly it wasn't that overwhelming of a group. (But I'm not complaining because it was an awesome final image for the season.)

Also, yay! for Jason Mamoa getting to reprise Khal Drogo although briefly. I know he was happy to be back.

I suspect it will still happen, just be more impromptu when they get to Craster's.

Also, it was interesting they left a lot of the prophecy out of the House of the Undying (especially pertaining to the red wedding). I think that the image seen in the books would probably give it away much too easy in a visual medium like TV.

What is really interesting is her vision walking at the wall. I don't remember if that was in the book, but the fact it was included I think is pretty telling and possibly at least some kind of indication that she will end up at the wall in the future. (Which makes sense)

Yeah, I figured all of the prophecy stuff would be left out, for that exact reason. If we get it at all, I suspect it will be from Quaithe later on.

I don't remember exactly from the books but were the Stark kids brought up under the Seven (I know they had a sept in Winterfell for Cat) or the old gods? Or was last nights wedding ceramony a mistake by the production team? I'm not getting all purist-y about it, just something I found weird, unless I missed that about the children. Even so, wouldn't the King in the North do it for the old gods regardless?

(The only one I know for sure was Jon Snow worshipping the old gods)

The impression I had was that they'd been raised as Septists (is that a word? an unfortunate one, if it is!) at Catelyn's insistence, though Ned Stark remained a devotee of the Old Gods. Jon Snow's open adoption of the Old faith upon his joining the Night's Watch seemed to imply his aspiration, conscious or not, to be like Ned, as well as an apparently genuine religious conviction. Note, too, that while Sansa generally seems to be a follower of the Seven, when she's carrying on clandestine meetings in A Storm of Swords, she visits a weirwood grove.

While we've never seen even a hint of a suggestion to this effect, I get the impression that for some inhabitants of the Seven Kingdoms, there's no particular contradiction in hanging out meditating in a weirwood grove for an evening, then going to services at a Sept the next day, in much the same way that an ancient Roman might make official sacrifices to the Olympian gods but privately be a devotee of an Eastern mystery religion. I get the impression that Catelyn's religious rigor is the exception, not the rule.
