Actually she's not the girl next door... she's from Volantis! In the book his love interest was Westerosi.

I have no idea why they made the change other than to make it more exotic and exciting than in the book, where the whole thing basically happened off screen.

I did hear one theory that maybe it was a way to push more lore and information about Essos and the slave culture. I think I preferred it when prostitutes were used for that.

(Not saying I buy that theory)

We have a saying my house when Dinklage completely owns a scene..."one more for the Emmy reel". And then we drink.

I dont like the whole change frankly. This cuts out the entire Spicer betrayal and makes the Red Wedding just a little bit different.

If you haven't seen it yet, here is a very interesting interview with Bryan Cogman, story editor for the show. He goes into pretty good detail on why they made some changes from the books.

--------------------------------------

While I get "why" they include everyone in the supporting categories I hate that Dinklage isn't put into the regular acting category this year as he had more screen time. Also I hate to see him and Alfie Allen potentially competing, because Allen hit it out of the park this season and may actually be a hurdle for Dinklage (or split votes).

Disappointed that Charles Dance isn't included. His work with Maisie was stellar.

I would have given the Emmy to Maisie halfway through the season, but Lena Heady's work towards the end may have changed my mind at least. Drunk-mad-Cersei was acting perfection.

And Go George for writing Blackwater!

If those are the supporting actors and actresses, who're the leads?

Clash of Kings is almost all about Tyrion cleaning up the mess Cersei made of Kings Landing. If anyone's a 'lead' in book two (and, hence, season two) I'd think it'd be him.

Somewhere down the line someone (either the cast or producers) decided that the show has no lead and they are taking a hardlined "it's an ensemble" stance. But I agree with you, this season heavily pushes Tyrion as the "lead" of the story. Sad too, because I feel both he and Allen deserve trophies.

Did anyone see THIS VIDEO? I thought it was right on point.

I am sadly way behind the rest of you. I don't have HBO, so I am just now catching the first season of GoT on DVD, two episodes at a time, from Netflix. Episodes 5 and 6 should arrive tomorrow.

Yeah, I'm only on season 1 of the show, too (didn't have HBO for season 1, didn't get to watch the DVDs until Season 2 was almost half over). So I'm going purely off of the books at this point too, with a bit of season 2 mixed in.

But what did you think of that video? I thought it was funny as hell.

It was funny. Since I came to the books because of season 1 the longest I had to wait for a book was three weeks after I finished Feast until Dance was released last July. So I don't have built in me the angst that a lot of the early readers have about GRRM finishing.

I started on the series back in the 90s when it was 'just another' piece of nerdy fantasy literature that nobody wanted to hear about. No angst on my account though, I'd rather have the books good than fast. So please, GRRM, take as much time as you need.

I generally agree, although I hope he can still achieve "good" in under four years. Hopefully the structural issues he was having to write around in Feast/Dance are behind him now.

Do you all think it's possible for Martin to finish the series in only two more books? Given that characters rarely die or get written out and that new major characters are introduced (or promoted from minor characters) all the time, I'm wondering if there will be either a major change in pacing style in the remaining books ... or three to four more books instead of two.

Assuming he does wrap things up in two books, I'm expecting them to arrive about four to five years apart, wrapping up the entire series in 7-9 years (since a book just came out last year).

From everything I've heard he has said yes it would just be two books, but they would be rather large.

Speculation time:

I think the next book will be paced pretty much the same as the series but I have a feeling the last book will have the 5-year-jump that he'd originally planned a few books back. I think we'll get the build up to the big event/battle and for the most part the end of the "action". I think the realm will be left in a bit of a vacuum as it cleans up the mess of the first six books and I think the series will jump forward in time for the last book where he'll tie up things in a pretty little noose........err I mean bow. The next book may have a bit of a cliff hanger and I can see the last book starting off immediately following and the five year jump happening in the middle of that book to serve as an extended epilogue.

It just seems like a few of the characters need to age faster than the pace of the books, and I'm convinced some of them will be important down the road. (i.e.: Rickon) And they need to age him at some point.

I thought the Official Word™ was that the Five Year Gap had been scrapped. He was going to use it to get all the players to Mereen, but he realized he needed to recap everything that happened in between, so he decided to skip it.

I don't see it coming back now.

Poorly worded and articulated on my part. Not the same 5 year gap, but some kind of jump forward. Like I said at the pace of the books (not the real world pace) we'll never see certain things that seem to be important i.e. Rickon's return and Sam becoming the maester of Castle Black. Two things I think will be important to the end of the series. I think the 5 year gap is the same as GRRM originally intending it to be a trilogy. The story got bigger and he realised he had to move things around. I think some of the original ideas of the 5 year gap are still unadressed now that we haven't had one, and I think at some point (even deep into the last book) we'll see some kind of leap forward. I won't bet my life on it, but I feel pretty confident.

(Also I apologize if I'm scrambling a bit. I'm writing this while eating Pad Thai at lunch)

I suspect the next book will have a lot of resolutions to some dangling plot threads. I just finished listening to Storm of Swords, and that book blew up everything after the mostly slow boils of Game of Thrones and Clash of Kings. I think we'll see something similar in Winds of Winter, with Dream of Spring wrapping things up.

Just think of all the deaths from Storm of Swords; Robb and Catelyn, Joffery and Tywin, the Old Bear and Ygritte, Lysa and Ser Dontos, Gregor (sorta) and Sandor (maybe)... and those are just the main "speaking roles". I think the next book will have a similar bloodletting.

As I finished each book, I tried to guess what would happen in the next book . . . and I was always waaaaay off. So far, George has done a great job at surprising me. I just hope it isn't too long before the next book.

I recall during the first book thinking that this was a series about Ned Stark and his family . . . yeah, right. Then I thought that all the Stark kids would be the focus of the books . . . . so much for Robb. Now I'm pretty sure that as soon as I decide who I think will live and die, it will guarantee that it will go the other way. I think the only one who is safe is probably Tyrion. He's just too much fun.

Yeah, the best part of assumptions is Martin's ability to squash them.

Tyrion's story has been steadily declining since book 2. He can't continue doing nothing and have script immunity forever.

But then again, I really hope all that story leads somewhere. Right now he just seems to be serving as the kind of character GRRM puts in place to be a witness to some perhaps-important events, or to nudging events in a particular direction. Perhaps in an effort to cut down on the number of PoV characters.

I had really looked forward to see the chemistry between Tyrion and Daenerys, in book five, so I was a little disappointed when Tyrion's journey just dragged on and on.

Fun discussion topic time.........

(I pinched this from the Westeros forums. I saw the thread title and thought "what a stupid subject", then I saw how many different responses it got and was hooked.)

Stannis truely loves his daughter Shireen. Yes or No? Discuss.

(Personally I say yes and she may be the only person he does love)
