Game of Thrones ALL BOOK SPOILERS (Up to Dance with Dragons)
That brings up a thought for Today's Question:
If you could read a book dedicated to a minor character/house/group who would you want it to be?

Another character who probably has a fun story is Greatjon Umber. Lots of manly men doing manly things. He had two fingers bitten off by a wolf, and then laughed about it. He's big and loud and boisterous. When you have uncles nicknamed "Crowfood" and "Whoresbane," you know there's a pretty good story in the background. It would probably have some barbarian/viking feeling to it.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Per Game of Thrones wiki regarding Talisa Maegyr
Originally, Chaplin was only announced as playing "Jeyne", leading to fan speculation that she would be playing either Jeyne Westerling, a noble girl of the Westerlands, or Jeyne Poole, a friend and companion of Sansa Stark's who accompanies her to King's Landing.[6] It was later announced to be Jeyne Westerling.[7] However Chaplin's character introduces herself as Talisa when she first appears. She goes on to say that she is from the Free City of Volantis, while Jeyne Westerling is actually a member of House Westerling, minor nobles from the Westerlands sworn to House Lannister. However, Jeyne's maternal great-grandmother was indeed from the east, though the books never state which of the Free Cities she was from. The discrepancy was later explained by Chaplin's character originally being conceived as being similar to Jeyne Westerling from the novels, even named the same, but then moving further and further away during rewrites. Eventually George R.R. Martin himself suggested they just rename her and make her a completely new character. Martin himself came up with the name. |

Don't worry this isn't a rant post or a "They changed the book! Damn them!" I'm just curious how the character began departing from Jeyne Westerling during re-writes. Anyone have theories why the character needed to be what she became? Flavor? Need to give some Essos backstory? Confusion over Lannister house v. Stark house? Etc? Etc? Let your theories fly! |
I also suspect that it's part of the inevitable simplification of plot that TV requires that they'll be dropping the whole idea that Jeyne's mother was being paid by Tywin Lannister... it's one of those subtle points that really enhances the complexity of the politics of Westeros and adds another example of what a master manipulator Tywin really was... but in the end it isn't all that necessary to the plot and is easy to cut. And without that plot point, there's really no need to make her part of another house. She's not a Frey, that's enough to get us to the Red Wedding.
What I'm curious about is what they do with her after that. Or maybe in this version, she will be at the Red Wedding. Could be interesting either way.

Good thoughts, Quasadu.
I like your thoughts of making her a more "equal" partner than the Book Jeyne. Making her come from high birth yet giving up the life to help others does scratch a Stark right where they itch, doesn't it? I guess making her come from a powerful house is much easier dealt with if you don't have to get into the exposition of who they are sworn to etc. so make her come from some place that doesn't really have a dog in the fight. Plus I think it helps set up the Slaver's Bay stuff for season 3 if the audience is introduced to it ahead of time. Necessary? No, but a nice display of it being one world. I think it also gives some of the world flavor to the audience with a little Volantis backstroy and will help set up not only Slaver's Bay but potential future content in a couple of seasons with Tyrion, etc. And making her an outsider to Westeros could provide some internal conflict in the Stark camp that may be used to show tension in the ranks.

Mental's Emmy Analysis.....
While GoT did win 6 technical Emmy's it missed out on the "big prizes" last night. To be fair, besides Dinklage, I'm not too surprised. In fact I think HBO/the producers kind of did GoT a disservice in their nominations process.
It seems they are going for the idea that being an ensamble there are no "lead actors", which on the surface is all nice an all for troupe unity. But let's not kid ourselves, Dinklage was the lead actor this season and I'd argue that Emilia Clarke is the lead actress. Simply making them leads for nomination purposes frees up other cast members for supporting roles and in my mind strengthens the shows chance of winning more statues. Maisie and Lena (as well as Charles Dance) did nom worthy work this season and for the life of me I don't get why they weren't put up. But something tells me that they don't want to step on any egos.
That said, I wouldn't have wanted to be up against Homeland anyway. It was (in my opinion) the best show of the year with two of the best acting performances. So Dinklage nominated in lead actor probably wouldn't have mattered much, except to free up other areas. Daines and Lewis both deserved the win as well as the show itself. And if you haven't seen Homeland I highly urge you to seek it out. It's not guilty pleasure escapism like GoT but it's a solid, well written, perfectly acted, topical thriller. I think the only actor that even gave Lewis a run for his money this year was Kelsey Grammer in Boss but something tells me his lack of nomination is related to Hollywood politics. Maybe Brian Cranston....he's been especially good (as always).
Aaron Paul in supporting actor wasn't a huge surprise as he has finally been able to shine on Breaking Bad and his character has finally grown from the idiot burnout of the first few seasons. But something tells me that win was more about Breaking Bad than the actual acting. It's hard for me to objectively say whether he or Dinklage is more deserving, freely admitting I have a soft spot for GoT.
Maggie Smith winning supporting actress.....well you can't really whine about that. It is Maggie Smith. But I think Maisie and Lena both deserved to be in the mix to at least see. And why two people from the Good Wife made the cut is beyond me, except that one is Christine Baranski who is the equivalent of catnip to Emmy voters.
I think this season suffered a bit in getting too big too fast (to the uninitiated). While they did a good job paring the story down from the complexity of the books, I think that was lost on non readers and at times the show came off overwhelming or even confusing. At least thats the impression I get from non reader friends. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the show wasn't good (or great) just missing a little of the straightforwardness of the first season. And shows like Homeland and Breaking Bad are very tightly focused (and smaller) as well as superbly acted and written.
It's an uphill battle to get a genre show to win best series, lets not kid ourselves here. Homeland was going to win, and it deserved it. Depending on how it's handled next season I think if GoT ever has a chance, it will be in how they do the Red Wedding. There is dramatic gold to be mined there. All this said, I can't wait for March 31!

I really hope we find out more about the Reeds in the next couple of books. The idea of a floating city in the marshes just sounds cool to me.
