True enough. I'm annoyed over this change and the people saying I'm a whiny ***** for not liking this are just making it worse. Apparently parity is only required when boys get something new; when girls get something I just have to sit there and keep my mouth shut.

Right. Point me a post by ANYONE who said that girls shouldn't have gotten the Gunslinger gear because they "shouldn't wear coats and jackets."

When you're done not finding that, then give me a good reason why guys don't get an olde-timey bartender outfit with suspenders and an apron included in that bundle?

Because boys are cowboys

So when a dev takes the extra time to correct an imbalance that players have complained about for ages - to say nothing of the questionable gender subtext going on in some of these packs - it's unfair because now the boys vs. girls columns don't add up? Would you genuinely prefer to stick to the status quo if that meant "parity"?

The devs have already promised us that they'll be more aware of these issues in future. To judge by the work going on with the Sci-Fi Pack and the Elemental Order Pack, they're genuinely trying.

That's an oversimplification, as you're well aware. There were plenty of people on the forums who defended the pack's gender division between gunslinger and saloon chippy as not a big deal.

But by all means, continue to scrutinize the dental work on this gift horse.

Because girls -certainly- wouldn't wear -that-.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You've made these packs really worth owning, and I'm anxious for their Live release.

Also, I hope you realize that if we were indeed to "divvy up the boy and girl columns" as the Gentlemen put it

you wouldn't be getting a new spiffy male outfit to wear

you would be getting saloon dresses and hair bows

Which there's totally nothing wrong with. Cause that would be awesome. But I just felt like it was necessary to point out what you would be getting so that when the time comes, you don't ***** about that too.

Absolutely, yes. It's not a question in my mind of "what's in the costume bundles," it's "HOW MUCH is in the costume bundles." For every ten pieces that females get, I believe that males should get at LEAST eight.

Having an issue with the Gunslinger bundle because of the differing costume content is a completely different beast, and it's not something I'm going to argue about.

I'm not. This right here basically means that females will get female-only parts, and unless there are "serious clipping issues," they'll also get all the male parts.
Despite my delight at this change, I have a degree of sympathy for your perspective regarding costume options for males. I play both male and female characters and I actually tend to roleplay my guys more; I would love to see them have more and better options. I was initially very excited about some of the Pocket D pack items for just this reason; unfortunately, they looked great in the pictures but, IMO, look terrible on the actual characters. I ended up being very glad that I had only cherry-picked a few of the pieces that could be used on men, and not bought the whole pack, as I probably won't be using them.

Having said that, there are (at least) two different aspects to the "gender equality card" as you call it. One, is parity in terms of quantity. There, I must agree, male characters get the short end of the stick. The other aspect though, is parity in terms of quality or style. At the risk of reigniting the previous debate, I believe there is a trend that has increased with the current art team, where men get to look bad*** and women get to look like a piece of ***. I find this trend distasteful. I recognize that some will argue the trend does not exist, but their arguments have yet to sway my perception. I am therefore thrilled that we will be getting more options for our female characters that buck that trend.

Quote:
How about from now on, you just don't make any female-only costume options anymore and just make everything unisex? It seems that's the only possible way to get gender equality in this crowd.
Personally, my preference would be for every piece to be accessible to every character, regardless of gender, but I imagine that would be inefficient in that it would require a lot of development time for pieces that would be unlikely to get used much.

I'm cool with that, too, if that's how they want to play it. Don't have a use for that stuff personally, but at least it'd be fair.

True. As long as I'm being thought a misogynist, I may as well tell the ladies to put on that aforementioned bartender apron and get back in the kitchen, right? -_-

As a stay home Dad with 3 of my 4 kids being girls, I can honestly say I am not a misogynist. I however will repeat that I prefer equality. I just want there to also be some unique parts for the male models. I WANTED and effin sash for some of my martial arts toons.

The bottom line is a very vocal group of people got what they wanted. Those of us who want some male only costume items, or want true equality, are in the minority now. We just happen to be in a minority that no one gives a crap about.

To Dink, I say thank you.

I will also say I have no regard to a 'fair' level of exclusives between genders. If someone else can have something, that doesn't make what you have more/less valuable. What is far more important to me is that all applicable characters have access to items.

If they added a nun habit costume, that should be female exclusive. A (American) football costume? Male exclusive. A trenchcoat? either. A long coat? Either. The truth is that 'female' clothing often has items that only females wear, while 'male' clothing is actually far more often unisex as far as to what people wear.

To match the Carnival of Light fellows, they'd have to get the Legacy Chain helmets and armor pieces... Which I'd also be happy to see ported over for player use.

completely and utter unrealistic for the amount of developer time we have. as has been pointed out by the devs. many times.

I NEVER understood this idea that some posters have that the devs and artists have infinite time to work on anything they want. As if there are no deadlines.

Some folks need a reality check. Again.

Excellent work, Dink. Phenomenal, even. 5-stars out of 4. Really REALLY good to hear.

But I do have a concern about your post:

THESE boards -the manifest convergence of gamers and internet forumites- the very place where the sheer mass of self-entitlement borders on singularity- and you posted THAT!?

If you make something look easy here, its appreciated the first time and expected from then on. Maybe your first post could be more like,

A few weeks back, I was pulling a Friday late-nighter when I realized that I'd been locked in! I had no way out, no place to sleep, and no change for the vending machine... leaving me only the lunchroom's coffeemaker and some stale poptarts I found under Noble Savage's desk to sustain myself until Monday. Wired on java, riding a sugar high, and finshing early with the obligatory-booby-trapping-the-office-Macaulay-Culkin-style, I passed the time doing the only thing I could -hitting whatever 'stretch goals' I could find in the production queue, porting a number of costume pieces over to female.

Although it took a day or two for the twitching to subside, I have to admit it was a rather productive weekend. Even moreso when the same thing happened AGAIN the very next week! (Many of my traps hadn't been found yet, so I had even more time to dedicate to development). And then... well, nevermind...

..All-in-all, before they gave me my own key, I managed to port over the following Costume Pieces to female:
I'll admit, its not my best work- only 3 cups of java so far today- but it should put you on the right track.

Oh, and thanks again.
