Calling the next Travel Power

I liked Ghost Rider as well.

Ok, it was me who said it.

I think tunnel is the next land-based travel power, but it will be interesting to see how water is addressed.
"Samual_Tow - Be disappointed all you want, people. You just don't appreciate the miracles that are taking place here."
I'm not keen on such narrow Travel Powers animations.
I don't believe bringing out a "Coyote" travel power was the right option. A "Canine" power that allowed you to select from the Coyote, German Shepherd, and a couple other powers for 600-800 points would have made sense because the various skins are vanity options that make it worthwhile.
Likewise I believe the Magic Carpet and the RocketBoard should get various reskin/recolour options to select from to make those powers worthwhile. Right now they are too limited and clash too much with various costume options.
After years of having one of the most varied and flexible costume and powers design interfaces in the market, we're being choked into a cookie-cutter scheme.
So, for the next set of Travel Powers, if they happen to be motorcycles, I'd hope to see a "Cycles" travel power, which gives us a choice between Rocket Bike, Modern Motorcycle, Classical Motorcyle (think WW2), Chopper, Bicycle, "Magic/Energy Construct" and Moped.
The animations could be made the same for the player (essentially the same sitting position, though Chopper and Moped might have to be cut) so I fail to see why this couldn't be done beyond two points:
1. It'd take too long to create all the skins compared with the projected profit Marketing has worked out (Wooo, Marketing dept in control again).
2. There's a veto on any powers coming out with various options, because they want us to pay for the various options separately (*gives Marketing the stink-eye*).

Hearing from everyone I have my counters.
For those who say it be silly indoors, isn't a rocket board and magic carpet silly indoors as well? Yet they exist.
For those with straffing problems, I like what codewalker said about pivoting.
Finally as stated above, theres the dreaded hover bike.
Also, with the rocketboard, coyote etc. they could easily supress all powers instead of de-toggling, making them more desireable. They seem to be ignoring that possiblity altogether. I really can't understand why.

It requires the modification of every animation currently existing in the game to work with these movement modes.
Furthermore, it requires every new animation created in the game going forward to be created with these additional movement modes in mind, increasing the number of animations needed for every new power set, emote, etc. This is not a simple request, it is an exponential increase in time and work for every new animation that is put into the game. |
So could the devs do it? most likely they could but I'm guessing the clincher as to why they haven't lies in the very last sentence of Clockwork's response. I think that for every new power set they add to the game they'd have to go back to every single travel power (like Rocket Board and the others) and add suppression for the new power sets.
Not a big deal when it's just Rocket Board, but the work is doubled when add Magic Carpet. Tripled with Coyote, and increases again with each new non combat travel power added. And the work also increases when more than one power set is added like the upcoming Staff Fighting, Beast Mastery, and Dark Control.
So I think detoggling required the least amount of future work to the powers. And that's work they will be able to spend on other aspects of the game.
Now if the devs came and said they could give us a couple of dozen new non combat powers that work like Rocket Board, or only 3-4 that had power suppression or even allowed all powers but the coding was too much work to add more, I have to admit I'd choose to have the couple dozen non combat powers.
To me the variety is more important than the retoggling issue.
BUT . . . if the suppression issue isn't as complicated as I'm admittedly GUESSING then by all means it should be done.
In the case of jetpacks I'd much prefer to see them added as costume pieces like wings rather than individual powers. They finally gave us an backpack option in the costume creator with animated backpack options so some jetpacks shouldn't be too big a problem.

Edit: Some might say we already have a sort of animated backpack in the form of wings, but I hate the wing animation. It's way too obtrusive and the contstant flapping doesn't even make sense (it looks downright silly with the tech wings) since large flying animals flap their wings as little as possible.

I couldn't agree more.
I agree and accept that if that's the case. My biggest beef is also with the lack of customization for them currently.

We already have Power Slide that uses standing animations so why couldn't that have been altered to use Rocket Board with flying? Then they could have added/sold a whole bunch of variations of what we were standing on as costume choices, and because it would use currently existing travel powers they wouldn't have needed to add new animations or detoggling.
They already did this with Wings, Boots, and animated Back Packs.
But I doubt we'll ever get a straight answer.
I'd like to see animated backpack options for fly/superjump as well. They could start with the Goldbricker jet pack. Mostly because I really like it.

Tech wings really needs a fixed wing option like the new phoenix wings.

If they ever made a backpack costume item that worked something like Buzz Lightyear's pack (with wings that folded in while on the ground and snapped out when in the air) I could die happy.

Would love a swarm of bats travel power.
Swinging, flying on a cloud or a chunk of rock, etc. would be neat too.

I've mentioned before that I created a character about seven years ago now that I envisioned used tech like this to fly around. I (apparently naively) believed that it would not take this long for them to actually create a costume option like that. At any rate it would be nice if I could finally complete the character idea I came up with so long ago.

This as a reskin of teleport would be outstanding. Other CC emotes could work in a similar manner.

There the character basically goes out of phase for a short period of time and you can move in any direction. That with a swarm of bats aura would be perfect. The character goes out of phase, the swarm of bats appears in it's place and moves to where ever the player wants before reappearing.
Oh please no. If they're gonna do it don't make it like or current teleport. I hate saying this but that other hero game has a much better teleport that would work better as a swarm of bats.

If they added an alternative teleport power like the one you describe, I'd have no problem with that, although it sounds more like Phase Shift than teleport to me. Teleport is supposed to be sort of instantaneous isn't it? it would have to have a phenomenal speed whilst phased to satisfy my idea of how fast teleport should be.
If they are indeed planning tunneling, awesome

I refuse to believe you've never envisioned yourself riding a motorcycle through your office workplace. Awesomeness beats practicality in a super hero game.
Hmm...how about a low rider 1968 Impala with hydraulics and 22" wheels. Oh yeah, the thing is armored like a tank, armed with mini-guns, Anti-tank & Anti-air missiles, and with a jet enjine mounted that shoots our a 10' flame to propel it over 300 mph! Woohoo!
