The things I "LOVE" about iTrials

I have seen the popular thread about hate for the iTrials, so I am giving my two cents about what I do like.

1) I like that I can log on and know that a group will be doing trials. If I don't have a lot of time or don't know what to do, I can find a trial.

2) I like playing all of the trials except Keyes. I don't like repeating them over and over, so I don't. But I do think they are fun and that I no longer have to run ITF to death if I want a team on short notice.

3) I like the choices I get for incarnate powers. 5 cool powers with many different possibilities takes a character that has sat and gives them a reason to play. Sometimes it takes a character that had felt useless and gives it what it needs to rock.

4) I like getting something purple fairly often!

1) I like the fact that they are more challenging than many other parts of the game.

2) I enjoy meeting new people. I have added quite a few people I met on trials to my global friends list.

3) Since trials came out, I've dusted off quite a few 50s and found new uses for them.

4) I've been inspired to make new characters after seeing that certain combinations could be especially useful for trials. My most recent example of this is the Electric Armor/Dark Melee Tanker I made. I would have never considered it before iTrials but I love playing it.

5) Seeing even a PuG league come together and do a flawless run, e.g., getting MoTPN in one shot.

1. New challenges.
2. The fact they aren't time consuming (Not you UG), so I can get a quick run in when I find I have a few minutes outside of my normal playing time to make progress on something. As long as you don't run back to back to back to back they don't feel like a grind.
3. New mechanics (even when they are annoying) to strategize around and overcome.
4. The powers and growth on characters that have been "stuck" the same for years.
5. Finding that one "thing" that rounds out a character that always just needed something. Sometimes its as simple as alpha or interface or a few pets to come along on missions.
6. The fact they are customizable from the start so I can match my existing customized powers.
7. The sense of community that comes with teaming with different people. I have a group of friends that have been playing together some as early as issue 2. We have a team going pretty much nightly and even though the group has shrunk over the years, those of us still around are here to play together. We typically run regular missions and story arcs as some prefer not to do TFs or have time limitations. And that is great. But it's also great to get in there and play with other people and personalities and make new friends and do different content for a change.

I was on that with you with your Tank, I believe, and that was awesome!

Honestly, I really love nearly everything about the iTrials. The grind can get old if you're doing the same trials on the same character all the time, but its always fresh if you mix it up even just a little bit (different character, different trial, different players, or even just take a break from it for a bit).

These are a few of my favorite things:

  • I love that it is a large scale challenge that requires more than a team of 8
  • I have yet to get bored with any of them
  • As much as you know the procedures like the back of your hand, no two runs are ever the same.
  • Knowing that while some of my toons suck on regular content they can really shine on some of these Trials
  • That I won't have to deal with Anti-Trial people while running a Trial
  • That there is always at least one league on Virtue running all the trials over and over and over that I can just jump into at some point
  • The Underground Trial - the story, the battle, the AMAZING ARTWORK, and the adrenaline rush of if we can or can't make that final battle.
  • Very Rare drops
  • Everytime a Vicki MKIV drops
  • I find them immensely enjoyable
  • That other people find them a challenge and wish to do them with me
  • That my Interface Incarnate Power really shines during those large additional mob parts of BAF
  • Did I mention the artwork on The Underground Trial?
  • THE ARTWORK ON THE UNDERGROUND TRIAL
  • The spore snow in UG
  • That the TPN Incarnate Trial is the only I've still yet to do successfully
  • ...and moar.

Trials are the reason why I'm still subscribed right now. I assumed I wouldn't like them, as I have an aversion to serious large group content in other MMOs, but once I actually tried them I found them a lot of fun.

I mainly play trials on Defiant, and frankly I think that may be the difference between the fun I'm having and the problems others seem to be experiencing. While small servers have their problems, they have their benefits too.

I enjoy the fact that I can log in and know that someone will be starting trials soon. While my server's not busy enough for trials 24/7, they do start regularly at about 8 - 8:30 UK time most nights, which is perfect for me.
I enjoy the fact that I'm teaming regularly with a large number of other players. I was mainly a solo player before, and my global friends list has exploded since I started doing trials.
I like the fact that, since I'm on a small server, we're running PUGs that will take ANY player, but a large number of the players I do see are regulars I know I can depend upon. I'm also proud that my server is full of people who are willing to explain the process of doing each trial to anyone who needs clarification.
I love the fact that I'm doing a nice variety of trials - UG, TPN and Keyes as least as often if not more often than BAF and Lambda now. It's much less samey now.
I love how I'm able to progress my character with new powers, and I can't wait for more to open up.
I really like it when a new trial opens up for the first time and we need to figure out how to beat it, that's a lot of fun for me.

I get the feeling that by playing on a smaller server, I'm avoiding the majority of the non-listeners, non-thinkers, and brats who seem to make trials a problem on large servers. Given how much fun I'm having working my characters through them (on fifth and sixth ones now) I could not be happier.

I like the emotes, cossie pieces, auras and trail auras locked behind the iTrials. I just wish they weren't.

Copy/pasted from the last of the threads like this, but I think the points still stand.

Quote:
One thing I liked about Lambda is that it actually uses the League system by forcing the group to split up and assigning simultaneous goals. It's nice that if there's going to be such a large fighting force of players, that they are used in such a fashion. BAF has this to some extent as well, a bit more if you're going for the Keep 'em Separated badge. TPN tries to have it, but it doesn't really work since it's actually more efficient just to ignore the Telepathists. The others don't really make use of the League system, though, and that's a real shame.
Or in short: multiple team content where each time has its own simultaneous goal.

Quote:
I do also enjoy some of the gimmicks that are designed to emphasize strategy. This is a fine line to tread, and sometimes the trials pull it off, sometimes they don't. BAF does it well, with the aggro sharing and the simultaneous defeats. MoM does a good job as well, with each battle having one or two minor gimmicks, and having to adjust between them. However, it's possible to do too little or too much. Lambda's are boring. Use temps, and then it's just a normal fight. Marauder's jumps prolong the fight, but don't really make players have to think. Keyes has too many at once, to the point where it feels pointless to even pay attention to them. Underground doesn't do too bad, but the Confuse aspect is a little too focused on specific powers rather than strategy (Keyes did too, before the changes). And TPN? TPN is a real annoyance, with the fact that one of the strategic techniques was specifically removed. I really liked the fact that use less commonly helpful effects like Phase and Knockback could be used effectively.
Or in short: when all powers are useful, and effective strategy can make them moreso.

Quote:
The last thing to note is the "suitably epic" feel of the trials. The best ones for this, I think, are Underground and MoM. The former is a breathtaking journey into what ends up an alien world, the latter a classic brawl with a powerful arch-villain on her home turf. Both of these do a good job of accomplishing the way post-50 content should really feel. Less so the others, which don't feel like much more than generic military strikes that could've been done 15 levels before.
Or in short: Kicking butt in a manner appropriate to folks at level 50+.

I do enjoy the sheer crazypants nature of having that many people in the same general vicinity all busting out wackiness.

This for me has been the best thing about iTrials. I've had 50's sit idle for years until iTrials.

I love the incarnate abilities i get from grinding the iTrials. The iTrials themselves largely blow chunks.

Having more progression to work on for each character.
More challenge than other content.
Group content. (as opposed to solo content)
Incarnate Powers.
Seeing what groups of random players can accomplish.
Reading all the rage the trials breed from players on other servers.

That depends a lot on what time of day and what server.

I agree with this to some extent. I see that you are on Triumph. I am on 8 servers (Freedom, Virtue, Exalted, Infinity, Justice, Champion, Liberty, and Victory) and don't have problems. My characters on Exalted JUST left Triumph because it was the ONE server I was using that I couldn't team as much or as often as I wanted despite a good channel to hear announcements.

(Wow, until I typed that, I thought I played on 6 servers!)
