Doctor Who: Amy and Rory to Leave During Series 7
Well this article already says he will get a new companion, so that's just a plot device to get rid of them. And got to say, if thats the logic to get them off the show, it will be very poor. He already attempted that during the last run.
It also does not sound like the seed for a "heartbreaking end." Maybe they are planning to kill one or both of them. Hope they dont do the alternate universe lock again.
Also there is no mention of Riversong leaving. Given that tie... makes it hard to permanently get them off the show without some real locked doors in between the characters.
On a side note: GIVE US MORE LADY VASTRA!
In a recent radio interview, Karen Gillan sounds like she's taking the right approach:
"I know the time is going to come when Rory and Amy have to leave. Its inevitable and that will make me really, really sad. But thats the nature of the show and whats so good about it. What keeps it exciting is the fact that its reinvented all the time with new people. I think thats a really great part of the show, so I will welcome the new companion with open arms."
There's also a lot of hints for next season in the new Doctor Who's Brilliant Book annual:
Karen Gillan: Karen says she is very happy about her role in Series 7 but adds: When I leave properly, thats it. I dont want Amy to pop up again every so often, because for me it would take away from the big, emotional goodbye. Im definite on that. On whether Amy could be killed off: I think it could be done, if you tackled it right. Not that I wouldnt love to pop back every so often. But just in terms of how its remembered once shes gone, shes gone. So death could be an option. Matt Smith: On the first two episodes: Steven told me the pitch for episodes 1 and 2 and its so brilliant. I got really excited. Its got lots of things I like. There are some extraordinary times ahead. On his 2012 and beyond: I get to go into the 50th anniversary which is really cool. Thats incredibly exciting. Steven Moffat: On the Doctors fame: Were going to explore that properly next series. The Doctors project is to sort of erase himself from history because theres only so many times you can stand and boast at Stonehenge. On the heavier story arc: I dont think Doctor Who will ever be as arc-driven again. On River: You realise youve learned nothing. She may or may not be married to the Doctor, depending on whether that was actually a marriage ceremony, or whether it counts if hes inside a giant robot replica of himself. On his future as showrunner: Even though Im more tired than Ive ever been, I dont feel any impulse to leave. |
Every time they dump a great companion I feel like giving up on the show. But I hang in there through the new and start enjoying it again. Except for Donna where I hated the series while she was on and started liking it again after she was gone. Being a whining shrew does not mean depth of character.
However I would love to see an Amy/Rory spin off. Sort of like a space going Torchwood.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
I'm a little wary of them calling it "hearbreaking". I hope they don't do anything inane just to stir up cheap melodrama.
Honestly, though, I feel like the spot where series 6 ended...they really don't need to be back in series 7 anyway. It was a good closing point for them.

As the first Doctor said to his granddaughter, "One day I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine. Goodbye, Susan." It's all the more touching since everyone watching the programme knew he was never going to come back but that he needed to say farewell.
Let's hope Rory and Amy don't get the Adric treatment.

Aren't these the same people that said the "Silence" was the scariest villain the Doctor has ever faced when everyone knows the "Weeping Angels" were the scariest. So I don't put much faith into the description of "Heartbreaking".
It's important for Doctor Who to bid goodbye to his companions, one way or another.

The series has to keep the Doctor moving along, whether traveling, fleeing, or wandering lost. That can't hold if the Doctor is allowed to pop in and visit his favorite companions like a beloved uncle. Russell Davies was willing to buck that convention once in "School Reunion" when Sarah Jane Smith came back, but he then went overboard, as usual, having the Doctor reunite with classic companions and new ones on and off until we had to endure that dreadfully mawkish montage for David Tennant's drawn-out regeneration scene.
It's a bit disconcerting that Moffat didn't think "The Wedding of River Song" was a strong enough note on which to end the Ponds' story, but it sounds as though he's planning to set the bar higher, not move back the goalposts, so to speak.
This just in. Amy and Rory Pond are not leaving in Season 7. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are, but the parts will be recast. Amy and Rory will now be played by...

TOM WELLING AND KRISTIN KREUK!
*runs like hell*
... Hit it ...
I loved the characters and storylines but *shrug* They had to leave sometime and I've eventually gotten to at least really like all but one of the companions along the way so I have no problem with them leaving now.
In fact, better they leave now than the show turn into The Doctor, Rory and Amy Show. In other words, leave them on too long and I think there would be a possibility we get bored of them... Always best to leave before that happens.
As for a spinoff... I would ALMOST like to see that, but not quite. I love both characters but I don't think either one is the type to lead adventures. Rory would much rather sit at home and have a happy little family life with Amy... Amy may long for adventure, and have a bit of a nose for finding it... But on her own, or even dragging Rory along, I don't see her as being the imputus of such a show.

Oh, and if you think she's whiney, you should see some of the companions 5 and 6 had. Moan moan moan, nag nag nag.
As much as I like Amy and Rory, I'm mostly interested in Matt Smith, so many rumours and things but nothing concrete on how long he'll be staying. Hopefully a very long time.
Late 2012 can't get here soon enough.
I am a little surprised and worried by the "heartbreaking" bit.
Surprised because I thought they'd already left! And worried because I thought/hoped they were going to get a happy ending. They deserve a happy ending
This is a song about a super hero named Tony. Its called Tony's theme.
Jagged Reged: 23/01/04
Not really surprising, this last season we saw a lot of winding down and slowly separating.
As long as it isn't another stupidly hamfisted allegory like the God Complex, I think it'll be fine.
Then again, it's very likely Moffet that's handling it and so far I believe he's shown himself to be a very competent writer for the show. The season finale this time was, admitted, a little weak, but in general I've really enjoyed Moffet's take way way more over Davies. He really doesn't go for the soap opera love drama, and while River is Moffet's "Rose", she's a far more interesting and complicated character than Rose could ever hope to be.
Honestly, I think just Amy and Rory leaving is going to be heart breaking however they choose to do it simply because the characters are so lovable and so close. Really though, I think it is about time to move on, honestly I imagine they're going to try to have another child they will actually get to raise.
Curious who the new companion will be. Kind of hoping they get another guy, to break away a bit more from the boy/girl romance angle. Then again, even Davies showed he was capable of a more classic companion set up with Donna, as overshadowed as she was by Martha and Rose stealing the limelight for a large chunk of her season ;p
I'm betting Amy is getting offed. Karen Gillan has said that she wants it so that her end on the show is a closing thing and not how Rose was which she felt made the departure cheap how she kept coming back. So more than likely they're going to either kill er off and Rory won't have reason to come back or Rory will die in such a way that she sees the Doctor's flaws and starts to despise him and says she can't be around him anymore.
And I really like Amy and Rory, but it already felt like they were on their way out the door to me. If one or both of them don't die (or lose their past with the Doctor), I don't think them 'leaving' could really be 'heartbreaking' to me at this point.
Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart's the memory
And there you'll always be
-- The Fox and the Hound
All the complaining bossiness plus the annoying voice (the vast ignorance didn't help, either)... I felt the same way about Donna at first. But to me that just made the character's development into someone I liked all that much better.

I think they are going to go with the running joke that the doctor is always late. I can see it now.. Amy and Rory go back home on a break while the doctor zips off for a moment.
He returns 60 or so years later. Amy has died of old age, Rory is ever young waiting each day for the doctor to return to tell him that Amy had a good life and to not go mucking it up. Then Rory plays a video of Amy that she records each year on the day that they last said good bye to each other, at first it would be very angry that he's late again, then she tells him about her life of the previous year, then finally as an old women asking when the funny man in the blue box is going to come visiting her again. When its all over Rory tells the doctor that his final duty is over and to depower him so he can join his wife.

"You don't lose levels. You don't have equipment to wear out, repair, or lose, or that anyone can steal from you. About the only thing lighter than debt they could do is have an NPC walk by, point and laugh before you can go to the hospital or base." -Memphis_Bill
We will honor the past, and fight to the last, it will be a good way to die...
Yeah let's hope not, but seriously Adric deserved the ending he got. I and a few others hated the back stabbing little twit, that he got to go out semi-heroicly didn't matter as long as he was gone.

Hell, even Katerina had a more heroic sacrifice than him!
I'd like to see them play more with the "Rory's dead... again" gag.
"Well, there's going to be some light music and a short note of apology saying, 'The universe ended last week, we're really sorry, we don't know what you're doing here, didn't you get the message?'"- Steve Moffat
Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat made the announcement at a screening of the Christmas episode at BBC TV Centre in London.
"The final days of the Ponds are coming," Moffat said. "I'm not telling you when or how, but that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end."
He said the Doctor, played by Matt Smith, was going to meet "a new friend". It is believed that role has not yet been cast.
On the departure of Gillan and Darvill, Matt Smith said:
"We had the most incredible journey. We took over the show and we've really had to hold hands and help each other through it. So it's very disappointing, but one has to remember that this show is about change and regeneration, and that's what galvanizes it and pushes it forwards."
This is extremely sad to me. Rory has become my favorite companion ever... here is one for The Last Roman! *raises a glass for a toast*
I guess I just hope, if they decide to go this way they make it final. As much as I liked Rose I got sick of her constant returns.
