Excalibur
Dead Poets Society
Rocketeer

Dupin' movies now, eh, Zwill?
These are all moves that I've never seen, and have no intetion of ever seeing. Especially "swingers". Never heard of it before, but it sure sounds naughty. |
BTW, has anyone mentioned "The Rocketeer"? One of the best superhero movies. Flopped in the theaters, but got a following afterwards.
My arcs are constantly shifting, just search for GadgetDon for the latest.

Here's a few I haven't seen mentioned
Naked Lunch

A Clockwork Orange
2001: A Space Odyssey

Truly awful film. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

I think I'm about the only nerd out there who didn't like LotR. That includes the books. Hell, ESPECIALLY not the books, ugh.
I did love The Hobbit (book), though it could stand to have been trimmed down a bit. But LotR just goes on and on and on and it's sooooo booooring. :/ |
EDIT - As to Dune, the original was okay (And not just because Patrick Stewart is my favorite actor) but the Sci-Fi mini-series was better. But then, the original was trying to turn the book into a 2-hour or so movie, when it took the series to make the whole book into a movie. |
The SciFi mini series was just awesome. And add in that they did Dune Messiah/Children of Dune with Prof X from First Class. I really wish they would've done God Emperor, Heretics, and Chapterhouse as well.
I am shocked where are all the fullmoon fans..
Ok.. lets see
Puppet Master: I, II, III, IV, V.. Curse of the, Legacy, Retro, Axis of Evil
Dollman
Demonic Toys
Demonic Toys vs puppetmaster
Demonic toys vs dollman
Subspecies I, II, III and VI
Trancers: I, II, III, IV, V
Robot Jox: 1 and 2
and pretty much anything else put out by fullmoon..
Project X (didn't see it listed may have missed it)
Now for the Stephen king movies..
Cujo
It
Pet Cemetery
Carrie
Firestarter
Now for monster movies..
The Fly (original and remake and all sequels of the original and remakes)
Godzilla just watch all of them way too many to actually list
Rodan
Mothra
Gamera
Please tell me that you have seen the classic monster movies..
Dracula, wolfman, Creature from the black lagoon, the mummy, Frankenstein..
That's all I can think of at the moment
Jaws 1 or 2
One flew over the cuckoo's nest
Seven
First Blood
Rocky
Sky High
300
Charlie and the Chocolate factory (Gene Wilder version)
Shark Night 3d
IT (They all float you know)
Langoliers
Robot Jox
Arena
Platoon
Gladiator
Clash of the Titans (new or old version)
Blind Fury
Sucker Punch
Too many 50's to list here's a few you may know.
Slazenger, Area51, Area53, Area54, Erruption, Mind Plague, Thresher, Sheath, Broadside, Debt
The original flick was horrible. Between the Navigators looking like something that should've been flushed, Sting's *shudder* codpiece, the lack of Harrah, the "weirding modules' and Thufir looking/acting like he should be in a home for Mentats, that was an absolute abomination of a movie.

But if you compare the 1984 movie to the mini-series directly (without considering the novel) then I'd have to say the movie was far more entertaining and memorable than the mini-series. The Dune movie had many of the "over-the-top" cult qualities that made many 80s-era movies superior to the numerous forgettable remakes since then.
Let's put it this way: if you offered me a free DVD copy of either the 1984 movie or the mini-series I'd take the movie without second thought. I know that I saw the mini-series years ago but it was so uninspiring I can barely even remember it at this point. *shrugs*

I'm willing to accept that the SyFy mini-series did far more justice to the source material than the 1984 movie did. Obviously at the very least it was able to cover more material with a longer overall running time.

I can only really level two criticisms at the mini. Namely some of the backgrounds were clearly painted set pieces (in the sietch particularly) and the lack of stillsuit discipline/water barrier usage amongst the Fremen.

On an aside, the original "Shining" is a great Stephen King Movie.

I think Freitag needs a Grindhouse night. Too many people suggesting "good" movies. My buddies and I for the last three years have done a Grindhouse movie night nearly every weekend. Sadly, I don't the list in front of me (and yes, we have a checklist...) of the movies I've seen, but I can think of a few at the top of my head.
Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991)
Dead Alive (aka Braindead) (1993) (From the demented mind of Peter Jackson.)
The Car (1977)
Django (1966)
D.C. Cab (1983)
The Last Dragon (1985)
The Inglorious Bastards (1978)
Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) (This movie ended our DVD player, it stopped working exactly after the credits ended.)
Tombs of the Blind Dead (1971)
Kung Fu From Beyond The Grave (1982)
Master of the Flying Guillotine (1976)
Dolemite (1975)
Black Dynamite (2009) (After this movie... Michael Jai White is forgiven for Spawn)
My Name is Nobody (1973)
Starcrash (1979)
I'm curious... have you seen The City Of Lost Children/La cité des enfants perdus? |
also since i didn't see it mentioned yet:
Starship Troopers
"Play Nice and BEHAVE! I don't want to hear about any more of your shenanigans brought up in our meetings at Paragon"-Ghost Falcon @Tritonfree @Philly's 2nd Convenient CIGAL BoBC/INOANN Arts&Crafts Sporks

I would rather have the remake. The effects were better, the costuming was better, the story was more in line with the books, the fight scenes were better and the characters actually felt like they were nobility (even the Baron). The only thing the '84 movie had going for it was Patrick Stewart.

I suppose it may just boil down to the idea that a little bit of Patrick Stewart makes up for a lot of otherwise mediocre mini-series content.

It Came from Hollywood (the warm up movie: guaranteed to put you into an MST3k mood)
The Five Deadly Venoms (obligatory token Kung Fu movie: actually a 70s movie but I saw it in the 80s, so there)
Back to School (yes, that's Terry Farrell)
The Sword and the Sorcerer (rocket sword ftw)
Caveman (zug zug)
Fright Night (horror movie, sort of)
Halloween 3: Season of the Witch (requires you be as stoned as the screenwriter and director were making it)
Toxic Avenger (because a grindhouse list without a troma film is inconceivable)

More quintessential 80s movies:
Fast Times at Ridgemont High ("Make up your mind, dude, is he gonna **** or is he gonna kill us?") - this and the Breakfast Club is 80s angst in a nutshell. Haven't heard of this one. Night Shift & Doctor Detroit (the unintentional pimp double-feature) Nor this. Remo Williams the Adventure Begins (still waiting to roll my Shinanju/Shinanju scrapper) Nope. Red Dawn (Wolverines!) I like Wolverines ... hmmm ... haven't seen it though. Stir Crazy (this movie is ba-a-ad. and it don't want no **** either) Nope... The Lost Boys (the vampires don't eat either Corey, but its still a good movie) There was a short story by Orson Scott Card called this, no? I can't remember. Anyway, is the movie related to the story? I haven't seen it. Absence of Malice (Paul Newman, Sally Field, Bob Balaban, and great end piece with Wilford Brimley) Somehow this rings a bell, but I don't think I've seen it. And since people are tossing in movies outside the period, I'm going to stump for The Bestest Comedy of All Time Ever, Murder by Death. Never heard of it either =(. |
Eraserhead. Ahh, why does this ring a bell. I can't remember watching it though. This keeps happening to me =(.
|
Has anyone mentioned "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th dimension"? I don't believe anyone has, but I've heard of it being good!
|

FINALLY!!!!
Someone even more cinematically challenged than myself!!
On account of a rather strict upbringing, I was not allowed to watch movies or much TV (we didn't have one). The occasional bit of TV I did catch was usually at friends houses or at Gra'ma's house (and that was very carefully monitored).
By the time I was 10, I began to rebel, and watched as much on HBO as I could on summer vacations (spent with Dad... in another state).
I was 12-ish before I saw my first movie in the theatres.... Cujo, of all things. My second movie was Raiders of the Lost Ark.
In any case, despite my newfound addiction to TV, and eventually getting a BFA in theatre (which included classes on movie history); I never really got into the habit of going to the movie theatres. So there are still many gaps to fill.
But Freitag, you've got me beat. lol
Here are a few, dredged from memories of rebelliously sitting in front of the TV, watching HBO... (forgive me if they've been mentioned already)
The Dark Crystal
NeverEnding Story
Muppet Movie
Risky Business
Legend
Victor Victoria
Conan (Arnold's original)
Krull
Red Sonja
Secret of NIMH
Just a few, not all necessarily awesome, but I've seen lots others already listed... lots of good stuff to choose from.
Good luck on this endeavor.

Also, while going back through the list, although some people mentioned "all the Lord of the Rings movies" I'm not sure if that was intended to include both the Bakshi Lord of the Rings animated movie, and the unrelated Return of the King animated movie. The latter, especially, is a must-see.
