R U as good on paper?

If you click menu, personal info...It will tell u how many Ultimate and huge bonuses you have , How many increases and how much you've stacked x5 and x4.. but are you as good on paper as it says? Im not sure if this is a question or a statment.. However.. I play multiple, multiple toons..I have toons that look good on paper, but aint pancakes! ( Ive spent billions to look good..on paper).. This, to me, now, means not as much as it used to.. Im going with the theory that its not how much u spend, but how smart u spend and not to get caught up in the words "Ultimate" and " Huge" and "x5" and "x4".. I had a stalker that had about 12 X5 slots. Thought i was sweet and was wrong.. I really think Purps 6 stack isnt worth it in cases to get the word "Ultimate" in your profile.. Tell me what u think....I might be wrong, but my best toon so far seems to have the shortest write up on personal info. Ty for ur input.

You're not wrong. I have some excellent inexpensive builds.

'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.

I look tough during fights. If people don't think my build looks good "on paper", I can easily show them.

Purples, for the most part, are good for getting recharge bonuses (also the non purple sets for ranged and targeted aoe are kinda crap). If you want defense you have to go with other sets that aren't purple.

I know some people on ridiculously expensive characters that I wouldn't take with me Mo badge runs even if they payed me for it. I also know people I would take along if all they could bring was a SO concept build. That says it all I think.

Idk about all ATs or all powerset combos, but to some degree which is not insignificant, the skills of the player are a factor in performance.

These skills include somethings which carry over to w/e toons--like situational awareness--and some which are toon dependent--like know why you have certain powers and how they should be used when they're used.

You can spend billions on enhancements, but if the set bonuses you're getting aren't complementary to your build then they're a waste of money. Equally, you can make certain combinations very survivable with just SOs.

Set bonuses do not an awesome build make, but awesome builds usually have a lot of set bonuses.

And most awesome builds are not filled with "Ultimate x" set bonuses unless they're extremely reliant on recharge bonuses. Even then purple sets are rarely worth six slotting.

I dont think I ever looked at one of my builds or anyone elses and thought..."Oh snap, that dude got 75 ultimates!"

I just slap builds together in Mids, IO the toon and whatever bonus' it has...it just has. Figured everyone else did the same.

Other than the confuse set for the 5% ranged defense I can't think of any with a 6th slot bonus that's worth it.

sadly, there are some whackjobs out there who won't invite people to a team if they don't have "enough" or "large enough" set bonuses in their profile. these morons also tend to think you need "healors" and very specific AT mixes for things like a non-master ITF run.

But they are out there. Luckily on most servers they are not the majority.

I've bumped into one yahoo on Virtue recruiting for a speed baf that would only accept +3s on the team and wanted to know AT and powersets before sending invites.

THIS!

I only have a few toons with purples and not because I can't afford it. I would rather have defense on so many toons than the bonuses I get from purples. I tend to stick purples in my blasters or my trollers, but hardly at all in my tanks/brutes/scrappers.

Agreed. I have a few characters with heavy purple usage (notably a Traps/AR defender and a Crab Spider) but they are all characters where having lots of recharge is useful.

I did 6-slot Apocalypse on my Traps/AR Defender since doing so soft-capped him to Psionic Defense but I agree that in general it's rarely worth it.

Spending billions of chasing purple sets is like spending a couple hundred grand on a fancy sports car, then remembering that you're a construction worker and you needed a car that could haul stuff.

Keep in mind your end goal, and find a solution that gets you there, regardless of whether it costs you more or less. If it doesn't get you to your end goal, the build isn't good.

seen a lot of that on freedom too when I played there...for TFs etc :\

I pick IOs on a per character basis. Most of them get a medium-to-high budget build (mostly rare IOs, some uncommons but no purples), and only a few very recharge reliant builds get the Ultimate bonuses.

This sums up my own build philosophy as well... Only builds that are high recharge reliant get considered for purple love.

I haven't seen that yet. I know of one person that wants people pming em to message with their AT, but it's only as a mild reading comprehension check and not as a "I want specifics ATs" kind of thing.

I have seen people lfm and specifying that you send your powersets in a tell before getting an invite for more than one SF. I don't recall which ones exactly.

I use purples in my builds for malling down.

Just a different opinion.

I really don't care about purple recipes, and set bonuses, and all that jazz.

My main character (level 50 Invuln / SS Tank) only uses IOs:

  • Is he at the softcap for damage/defense/etc ? Guess not (have no idea what that is and I don't care).
  • Can he hold his own in a fight ? Oh yeah.
  • Do I have fun playing him ? OH YEAH.

If you are willing and able to chase after purple IOs, that's fine by me, to each his own - to me, it's how you play, not what you play with that matters.

And if some jerkweed doesn't want me to join his TF just 'cause I'm not IO'd to the gills, well /gignore and he can take a long walk off a short pier for all I care...

I wish there was a way to dump all of your powers in [bracket] form into a single tell, just for this occasion.

As in, literally all of them.

i would spend points to be able to do this. Especially if it included a set bonus list.

The only thing more tiresome than the people who care about purples are the people who aggressively don't care about purples and expect the former group to think them so very impressive because of that.
