So I finally saw the episode last night w/ my dad and yeah it was a good episode but...again; like you said I saw how he got out of it as soon as the Doctor said, "so you can make yourself look like anyone..."

The one thing that had really disappointed me through the whole run of the new Dr Who was the absence of the Brigadier. I was glad that they finally acknowledged just how large a part he had played in the Doctors life.

Brigadier? Who's that?

Old ally of the Doctor starting with Pertwee. He worked with UNIT.

Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart

One of the founders of UNIT.

He was originally encountered by The Doctor in his Second incarnation.

Given that I only started watching with the 2005 series and have only seen a handful of the old serials, I think I can be forgiven.

At least I know who he is.

I started watching Doctor Who with the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) when I was a kid. Not because I'm that old, but because the Doctor Who repeats started with the Third Doctor's adventures.

I suppose the fact that I'm not a huge fan of the Fourth Doctor isn't going to help endear me to you either.

Trust the Brigadier to be eminently matter of fact with a rational explanation when facing a winged demon.

Pitiful. Can this world do no better than you as their champion?

Probably. I just do the best I can.

5th. But I think Moffy has spoken to Andrew Cartmel - or at least read his work - because Doc 11 is drawing a lot of comparisons with Doc #7. He uses companions. He always has a plan, the killing Amy's faith in him was done better as McCoy annihilated Ace's faith in him in Fenric, in [Silver Nemesis] Lady Peinforte asks Ace "Doctor Who? Don't you want to know WHO he is?" and then threatens to blow the lid off with tales of the Dark times of Gallifrey and how the Doctor was in those up top his neck...

I didn't like that "killing faith in the doctor" episode. Largely because that isn't what faith is. Amy TRUSTS the doctor because he does always pull through. She doesn't have faith. It's only faith when you have no evidence or have evidence to the contrary... like I have faith that humans won't destroy the world... Everything points to the opposite, but I still have faith and believe we wont kill ourselves.

This just bothered me because it's an abuse of the language that people get away with and it does severe damage to peoples' understanding of each other.

Ah okay, I haven't watched any of the older Doctor Who series (and most likely won't; no time!)...

But I guess another question is, when did they mention the Brigadier in this last episode? I didn't hear anything; but then again, still have the issue where they talksofastIcan'tunderstandthem....

I call phooey.

You have evidence that that humanity won't destroy itself - It never has before and there are people talking, planning, etc ways not to.

This is much the same evidence Amy had. The doctor has always come through for her, at least in the end... He's also always trying to, always making plans to.

In fact, I would say Amy's belief is closer to faith than yours. Humanity is not consistantly putting you in more and more danger with every trip you take. The Doctor has lost companions before, humanity has never destroyed the earth before. Based on the evidence of past results, humanity is a lot less likely to destroy the earth than the doctor is to have a companion killed.

Further, I would argue both can be said to be faith. Yes, there is prior anecdotal evidence of both of them (Doctor saving Amy, humanity not destroying the world) but there is no scientific proof or even evidence that these habits will continue into the future... So extrapolating past evidence towards an infinite future with no scientific reason to do so? That is an act of faith...

On the other hand, I believe the sun will rise tomorrow. I have the evidence of all the other days, plus scientific evidence to back up it's continued happened. It would be a questionable choice of words to say I had faith the sun would rise tomorrow... Well, unless I didn't know about science and such. For those wacky individuals who still believe in pantheons of gods and giants carrying the sun or what not, I guess it could still be faith to them,

When he was putting off his death, he called to invite the Brig out to dinner (or summat) and was told he'd died.

Ah, I remember that! I thought Brig was a nickname for someone else though...

Thanks!

This probably would've been filmed close to when Nicholas Courtney, the man who played the Brig, passed away. It's been a rough year for us older Who fans, losing him and 'our' Sarah Jane in the same year.
