Content flow and new players

I teamed with a free player today, who was asking in help if anyone want4ed to help her with a mission. Another free player joined and the three of us had a fun time doing a radio mission in KR. After we did that, I asked her what the next plan was and she picked another radio mission. I enquired why she was doing radios instead of the normal content and she replied that she hadn't been given any. She said her route from the tutorial was to Habashy who then told her to go speak to the detective in KR, and he gave her the radio, and she assumed that she was to do radio missions until told otherwise by the game.

Is this a problem with her understanding, or a problem with how the contacts describe what players are to do to follow the normal arc progress in the game?

Well, after enough Radio missions, she should be told to protect the bank, and when talking to the police contact after that, should be given another contact. So eventually it should put her back on the "right" track.

They should also be given other contacts along the way, I think.

I'm pretty sure that Twinshot pops up in a window as soon as someone hits level 5 - and there's also the "find contact" button in the contacts list which picks up contacts in your level range.

yup , after u hit X lvls (and u visit the trainer) some contacts are added to your list , and you are informed about it with a pop up window

A wild guess would be she was sent to a different contact in KR but when you first enter the zone your waypoint is overwritten and you are sent to the detective for a radio. She probably didn't notice the switch.

Yeah, now that i think of it, the way she descriobed it, this could very well have been the case. I remember that confusing me in Beta too. That's a really stupid design feature.

What's worse is that it's exactly the same "mistake" they made with the Hollows way back where most players never realised there was any content from 5-15 *other* than the Hollows because Wincott started giving them missions straight away.

It's about time we did something about that "feature." Once a player has a radio, the game should NEVER redirect them to a detective upon entering a zone. It serves no purpose, and the chances are really good that they already have a destination in mind when they entered the zone, so if the game changes their destination, new players will be VERY frustrated to find out they just went to the wrong part of Skyway, and that where they went is NOT the mission door.

I can't count the number of times this has happened to me, even after all these years.

I'm level 50. I've had a radio since level 5. WHY do I need to drop everything and go see a detective?

Right now, when you finish the Atlas Park missions you're told to go to KR and see a detective. The only other contacts that pop up, even using Find Contacts, are Twinshot and Wincott.

I've found it pretty annoying myself since, if you don't want to do Twinshot, you have to run radios to get back onto a contact track.

I don't understand why they got rid of the old lowbie content. The low levels are now a railroad. Adding the new stuff is great, but they should have left the old stuff in as well.

"Find Contact" is useless; it has a very limited selection of Contacts.

This is indeed the situation. The legacy contact chain got broke when they chopped off the beginning zone missions. The only way to pick up the trail is with a Safeguard mission (which, thankfully, even if you fail, you still get a contact).

This was pointed out in Beta and never fixed, if indeed it will ever get fixed since the Devs may have other ideas about revamping the level 5-15 missions. Or, learning about and doing Radio/Safeguards is intended since it will eventually lead you back to the legacy arcs.

I hope not. Granted, I've done the low level content so many times that I don't often want to run it, but I really dislike radio missions. That was one of the major annoyances I had redside.

It isn't just newbies but returning players that have fallen into the Radio Mission trap as well.

Keep in mind, as mind-numbing as they can be, Radio Missions tend to get run instead of story arcs, and this has been true for as long as there have been Radio Missions blueside and Newspaper Missions redside. They're quick and easy. But they give the false impression that the game is simplistic and boring.

I'm glad this player had someone like you to set them right. But I do feel a bit discouraged by the returning players who run a few Radio Missions, and decide they don't want to stick around based on that.

It's a problem.

That has always been an asinine feature and it should be removed.

The break would happen once Twinshot sent her to Kings Row to talk to Blue Steel.

During our time playing, one of the freebs asked me incredulously how i could play the game for 6+ years. I replied "They keep bringing out awesome stuff, I keep playing". His reply was "Nah, this game is too repetitive for that. But it's ok for free."

He'd been doing radio missions over and over.

Actually, Matthew Habashi sends you to officer fields after **SPOILERS FOLLOW** you've prevented the Hellions from summoning a giant demon that could accomplish the same thing in Atlas Park that the Shivan meteors are accomplishing in Galaxy City. After introducing you to Officer Fields, your work with Habashi is done. Fields invites you to solve a murder mystery, which leads to your first run-in with Doctor Vahzilok's zombots. Somewhere during your work with Fields, it's likely you'll be contacted by Twinshot.

This is all assuming you're doing the lower level content at a regular pace, and not joining other heroes on too many adventures in-between, and not out-leveling your contacts. If a player wants to experience story content, they will need to learn a few tricks. A new player isn't likely to know that visiting trainers past a certain level will nullify your relationships with contacts (unless they have triggered a story arc, that is).

Sometimes when I'm in the mood for low level content, I'll put a character in /hideall and /unhideall around level 20. Even still, it is not abnormal for my combat level to reach three to four levels above my security level. During those times the Paragon Wiki is an indispensable tool for checking contact levels and planning my training around them. (As an aside, players sometimes ask me why I don't just use Ouroboros to catch up later. I'll reply by asking them why they don't just stop reading a good book and finish reading it a few weeks later. Just, ya'know, for the heck of it.)

To be fair, the level 5-9 contacts outside of the Hollows have never been anything special. Sure, you might find a few badge missions among them, but there's no connecting story arc among them. They're all one-shot missions.

But most do offer Badge missions, or even temp powers (i think you get flash bang grenades from one of the 5 - 9 contacts)

Granted, they are INSANELY easy to out level, but they do offer nifty things. I'd be nice if after 'saving atlas' your introduced to the origin contact you would've gotten after your 'intro contact' from before.

I started a new toon just to try and play whats available to a free player and so far the best chain of contacts I've found is...

1) Tutorial
2) Habidashry through Theiry in Atlas
3) Twinshot 1
4) Wincott through Frostfire mission.
5) Twinshot 2
6) Finish out Hollows
7) Twinshot 3
8) Faultine (Temblor and Penelope)
9) Midnight Squad Intro
10) Faultline (Doctor and Agent G)
11) Mercedes Sheridan (through Crown of Glory)
12) Doppelganger arcs
13) Roy Cooling

That's as far along as I've gotten with that toon so far with a toon who's now closing in on level 30. My next step after that will probably be the introductory Oroboros arc and then the two semi-TF arcs Midnight Son and Mender Lazarus offers which should get me to a high enough level that I can start the RWZ arcs.

Throw in some radios/safeguards and that should offer a pretty diverse array of maps, opponents, and mission elements (including a couple of "save the city/world" bits) for a new player to level up with.

I don't think that's what happened here. Twinshot sent her to KR to talk to Blue Steel, but upon zoning in her waypoint and contact were reset to the Detective (because it's the first time she'd been to the zone), so she went there instead of to Blue Steel, was given her Radio contact and told to do Radio missions. It is definitely a problem that should be addressed for new players. I almost got suckered by it myself and I "knew" I needed to go see Blue Steel and I "knew" where he was and it wasn't the direction my compass was telling me to go. If a veteran player who has been here (off and on) since day one can get confused, imagine how confused the newer players are and how unlikely they are to upgrade to VIP if all they ever know to do is Radio missions.

It's also assuming you actually READ the mission dialogue. I've met a number of players who had no idea why they were doing what they were doing, mostly because they clicked through all the dialogue as fast as possible.

A depressing number of players haven't the slightest clue what the game's story is all about because "If they wanted to read they wouldn't be playing a video game."

Seriously, someone actually told me that once. They said the game was boring and had no story. That was their response when I asked them if they'd actually been reading the dialogue boxes.
