Discussion: Extended Live Server Maintenance - Thursday, September 22, 2011
Isn't this like 9 server upgrades in a row? That means that either they are in there installing advanced AI or the original upgrade was running the servers on a calculator wristwatch circa 1982.
Can't we just call them repairs or something? "Today we are bringing JoJo the idiot circus boy back in for server repairs. This time we will beat him if he tries to use a blender as a harddrive again." |
Okay. Let's deal with facts.
The fact is, that Paragon is trying to bolster the infrastructure of the game so that it can handle higher loads. The fact is, you're paying for access to the service during all times NOT designated as maintenance windows or accidental downtime during crashes. The fact is, despite noises to the contrary, you're NOT entitled to any compensation for downtime of ANY sort. The fact is, this large maintenance window is going to happen sooner or later. It's more sensible that it happen now (as soon as possible), rather than taking it down later during the F2P push and alienating MORE users (and gaining a reputation amongst new players for inordinate amounts of downtime). The fact is, if you're unsatisfied with the service YOU CAN STOP PAYING FOR IT. Whining and griping about something that has to happen achieves nothing. |
Are we entitled to something: No, but when the devs feel they've "let us down" they have given us extra"goodies" in the past. How did they know we were "let down"? Because we voiced our opinions and concern's.
I'm glad you have that "DEVS CAN NEVER DO WRONG!" attitude, but people like you keep games in the stone ages. People that want progress and satisfaction from a product voice their opinion and thoughts on matters pertaining their investments.
Who knows (not you because you aren't a dev), we may just get something out of this because this is the most I've seen the game go down so much for such large periods of time since I started playing 3 years ago. And sitting down "taking the downtime like a man" will get us squat.
The dev's need to keep the public happy within limits. People are unhappy right now. Even a extra 400 paragon points ($0 cost to the devs) would tell me "Hey guys, I know this sucks but were trying to improve the game. In the meantime heres a bone to let you the customer know that we do care about your business".
I don't think that is too much to ask.
Noooooooo it is raining now...I can't go outside to wash my car windows.
zombeh! Get back to work. Slacker...

The ustream is really messed up. Audio only and it's from the wrong stream, it's about a sim pet thing, and not playing Zwill like it's suppose to!
Actually I'd say "yeah" they DIDN'T know.
This is a HARDWARE move. It was just spelled out in the UStream as to what was going on here. They JUST upgraded a couple weeks ago. I HONESTLY don't think they'd have planned two successive hardware upgrades this close together. It makes no sense. Either from a financial perspective OR a work-process standpoint. |
Clearly indicating why they wouldn't be able to notify people at the beginning of the week. Via email.
I find this scenario very believable.
Apparently I'm to stupid right now to make an awesome link with a picture and stuff but neverthelss sign the petition! [u]http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes[u]
Shame it has to be the day I choose to try the game again and it just happens to be the one day this week I don't work. Got through the updates just to find I can't play.

So...
Expanded server hardware that can handle more players is of no benefit to paying customers? Do you *really* believe that? That once the "shakedown" of the new hardware is done and we can deal with less lag, etc. will be of zero benefit? The hardware upgrades will benefit *everybody.* You mention increased server loads. Now stop and think... just *why* would they, maybe, possibly, have decided to upgrade hardware? Perhaps, just maybe, to *handle* those increased server loads? Nah, crazy thought. Go ahead and complain. Like I said earlier, I'm missing time, too - this *is* my "prime time." But think about what they're doing, and what they've BEEN doing, and what might be involved before saying much of what's been said in this thread. This is not a fast job - servers never are. And, like it or not, it *is* better for them to do this sort of thing in stages. Frustrating for us when inter-hardware communication glitches, or hardware itself has an issue, causing lag and other server downtime, absolutely - but three months from now, nobody will even remember this. |
I wanted to play this game, so I pay to play it. I couldn't care less about NC trying to bring more "free" players into the game. If they wanted to play this game as much as I did then perhaps they could also have subscribed too?.
I'm annoyed because it means I have lost money for which I have paid for in playtime.
Some measure of compensation is hardly out of the ordinary.
By the way I WAS complaining!. Doh
..and if you choose not to complain thats entirely up to you too!.

After having the servers down for so long and so often now I know that NCSoft doesn't care about the loyal players. They have their money, why should they care. After asking if we were going to be reimbursed or compensated for all this downtime and being told "good luck" makes me wonder why I've wasted so much time on this game. The loyal players are being used as guinea pigs now before the people that don't have to pay come over. They will be getting the game free which means they won't have to spend a dime after the loyal players have spent thousands of dollars on the game. That's not a made up amount. The games were $40 so there was the initial game, evil vs bad, and now going rogue. $40 times 3 comes out to $120. Then the game time is $14.99 per month. That's $179.88 which I agree is not that much but if you add it up with 7 years then it comes out to $1,259.16. Add all that up and you get a pretty good amount of money spent on this game and that's not including all the items not counted. It's so tempting to say heck with it and join the free players. But I really don't care anymore. It gives me plenty of opportunity to find a different game especially since all the downtimes are during my days off and when I can play.
I understand why they are having the downtime. I hope they get things up and running smoothly. This might actually fix the laggy zones. So take your time with the downtime. If you need heck take 12 days, that'll just give me more time to find another game.
It's looking like we're back up. Doom gloom and tears are over~
Because they're NOT repairs. They're server upgrades. They're physically moving to new equipment. Not simply adding on to existing stuff.

That's great, but unless Zwill came in with a bag of new 8 terabyte solid state drives and they all started dancing around the office singing Love Train, I wouldn't call it an upgrade.
We have "server upgrades" at work, and you'd be shocked how often it results from someone saying "hey, look what I found in the closet."
You don't know what they are doing. Something they did at some point didn't work as they intended, so they are trying something else.

What is Zwill's complete red name? I need to pm him. I can not get past the server login screen. the screen goes black and i receive a notice saying, You have been banned for activities witch go against the spirit of the game.
Damzs serious post of the month!
- For the people that mention the server list merge, that was a HUGE positive for the EU players as a whole. A large majority of us have made more friends and speaking on behalf of union, the server population did increase.
- For mentioning those costume competitions at early hours. Since there was only 3 costume competitions, either the EU or the NA would have to lose out on one and so i aint fussed that EU only got "1" costume competition in our primetime. Costume competition is a costume competition.
- For the posters telling EU players complaining to stop, no. As is said in many threads, we pay our subscription just the same as you and if we feel that we are being short changed in any shape or form then as a paying customer we have every right to voice our concerns/complaints.
- For the posters saying EU should just accept it, no. A lot of the posters who are telling the EU to be quiet are quite well respected people on these forums and i am quite shocked and dissapointed in those players who usually seem quite sensible. Yes we do complain a lot but we are a large portion of the community.
- In regard to people saying [including myself] that for once we'ld like to see NA downtime, there is a genuine reason for this. Its not something as petty as "punish" them and not us, no. The reason is we'ld like to proove to you doubters that these forums would explode [if they let you log in] from the NA players ranting about their playtime being gone. I do remember the one time not so long ago servers were down for you players and there WAS a lot of multiple threads full of rage and "omg!??!".
- Is it overreacting people asking for a days worth of free time added to their account? Not in the slightest. Asking for the money back would be childish, asking for the amount of lost time the EU has lost in the last few weeks is acceptable by a lot of paying customers.
- Finally a small story. My younger brother and friend both started playing this game about 2 weeks before i21. Both have quit now, their reason? They loved the game but didnt want to pay to play a game which is mostly down during their playtime.
Tuesday 20th sept: 3 hours downtime
Saturday 17th sept: 4 hours downtime
Thursday 15th sept: 4 hours downtime
Wednesday 14th sept: 2 hours downtime
Tuesday 13th sept: 12+ hours downtime [i21 we'll forgive!]
So since i21 launch there has been [note that they are the scheduled downtime, there was infact a lot more] 30+ hours downtime nearly all during EU primetime.
@Damz Find me on the global channel Union Chat. One of the best "chat channels" ingame!
As far as the EU players demanding downtime during NA prime, stop being silly. I'm dead serious. Not trying to be a jerk or anything but I'm tired of that specific QQing.

Fact is it is irresponsible to not announce something of this magnitude via email days prior to implementing it.
|
Because everyone looks at their e-mail on a daily basis.
Because the email will get through spam filters in every single instance.
Because the e-mail they use in any given time will get through systems requiring MANUAL responses to be added to lists of safe senders.
Because everyone has their real e-mail, or even their primary e-mail put in on their NCSoft account.
That knowing chuckle you hear in the background? That's me.
....and with Mereman and me posting on the same thread this is now the thread of DOOOOOM!!
<looks mysterious....but still bald emote>
Also with the servers being moved and all, I'm definitely under the assumption it will take a bit longer.
I played a third person shooter (which was shut down my MGM earlier this year) where they had to physically move the servers even the ones the forums were on. And was down for at least a whole day if I'm remembering correctly. But man.. I'd be lying if i said i wasn't i panicking after about 16 hours lol. At least we have the forums right? :P
But the devs have to do what they have to do, I'm one of those people that play for hours when i have the time to anyways. So this does affect me as well, however it would have been mighty cool of them to let us know about this downtime further in advance.
